Museumnacht "Museum Night" annual event where museums open their doors to the public with special events, talks, DJs. 1 ticket (€20) gets you into 45 museums and some 226 possible events and activities. Saturday 5th November 2011. Hermitage Amsterdam "Rubens, Van Dyck & Jordaens" Paintings from Antwerp on show at the Hermitage (running until 16th March 2012). Van Gogh Museum "Snapshot. Painters and Photography, 1888-1915" looks at the early days of photography and its influence on artists. Runs to 8th January 2012. "East-west: Japan and japonism" Japanese prints from the Van Gogh collection; "Bedroom Secrets: Restoration of a Masterpiece" fascinating exhibit on the recent restoration of van Gogh's The Bedroom. Both run till 15th January 2012. Rijksmuseum Schiphol "Dutch Girls: Holland's Golden Top Models" 9 portrait paintings from the 17th century on show at the airport. Free entry, runs until 12th December 2011. Tropenmuseum "Soulscape Road" Black and white photo exhibition by Indonesian photographer Oscar Motuloh which features Indonesia's natural disasters. Runs until 20th November 2011. "Kurkdjian & Co Photo Studio (1888-1936)" photo exhibition on colonial life in the East Indies, runs until 15th January 2012. Rembrandt House In Rembrandt's Footsteps, Dutch Paintings from a Private Collection exhibit of 17th century Dutch paintings from the collection of Alfred Bader from Milwaukee. Runs to 8th January 2012. Jewish Historical Museum "Unguarded Moments" German photographer Marianne Breslauer (1909-2001) captured unguarded moments in modern city life. Until 13th November 2011. Allard Pierson Museum The Etruscans (men) a look at the life of the pre-Roman Italians in terms of trade, religion and war. Concurrent exhibition of Etruscan women runs in Leiden's Rijksmuseum van Oudheden. Runs throughout November (to 18th March 2012). Huis Marseille "Scarlett Hooft Graafland: Soft Horizons" Exhibition of temporary sculptures photographed in rugged and desolate locations. Ends 11th December 2011.
Stadsarchief "Amsterdam New West '50-'60" exhibition about the post-war development of one of Amsterdam's western suburbs illustrating the daily life of inhabitants at that time. Runs to 8th January 2012. OBA Library "Streets of Sao Paolo, Brazil" free photo exhibition by photographer Bas Losekoot, runs to 30th November. Bags & Purses Museum "Impressive Presents" (until March 2012) looks at the many donated items the museum has been given during its 15 year history. Museum Geelvinck "India at home tracks of a colonial past" ongoing till 10th November 2011. Museum van Loon "Van Loon Rides Out" exhibition on the newly restored coach house. Runs until Feb 2012. Verzetsmuseum "A stitch a day: Embroidering in prison 1940-1945" long term exhibit running to May 2012. Fiesta Cubana DJ Arno hosts the popular monthly Cuban-style salsa night. Badcuyp Amsterdam, €5 entry, Friday 4th November from 10pm. IDFA International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam. Sinterklaas Arrives The Dutch version of Santa Claus (or St Nicholas) makes his annual arrival in Amsterdam on Sunday 13th November. His boat will sail along the Amstel river before arriving at the Maritime museum at midday. He then jumps on his white horse surrounded by his helpers the Zwarte Pieten ("Black Petes") and heads to Dam Square and Leidseplein. Sunday Market Sunday market with fashion, design, arts, food and kids stuff. Cultuurpark Westergasfabriek on 13th November (1200-1800). Dutch National Ballet Perform "Swan Lake" on 3/5/6/8/10/12/14th November. Muziektheater Amsterdam. Storytelling Festival Ben Haggerty (UK), Cat Weatherill (UK), and Theresa Amoon (France) join other Dutch story tellers at various locations including the NDSM wharf and OBA library. 4th to 6th November. Pathé Opera The Tuschinski cinema hosts live streaming opera from the Metropolitan in New York. Watch Siegfried (5th November) and Satyagraha (19th November). Netherlands Opera Performance of "Idomeneo", Muziektheater Amsterdam, various performances from 9th November. Boom Chicago Daily comedy show and dinner. 2 shows playing during November: "Social Media Circus" and "Can't Dutch This". Soweto Gospel Choir Concert on 20th November at Theater Carré. TEDxAmsterdam Speakers tackle the subject of "Human Nature". Event will be held at Stadsschouwburg on 25th November. Attendance by initiation only. Il Volo 3 young Italian tenors perform on 28th November at Theater Carré. Muziekgebouw aan 't IJ Free concert at 1230 on Tuesday 8th November (Trio Contrasten ensemble). Also the Internationaal Van Wassenaer Festival & Concours has free concerts on 18th Nov (1030), 19th Nov (1130). Muziektheater Free lunchtime concert in the foyer every Tuesday at 1230.
