Museums & Exhibitions in Amsterdam

Museumnacht 2017 – The annual "Museum Night" event, now in its 18th year, where Amsterdam's museums throw open their doors to the public between 1900 and 0200. 1 special ticket can get you into any of the 50+ participating museums with plenty of activities/events on offer. The ticket also includes a 24 hour GVB transport ticket and further day entry into one museum. For night owls the after parties continue at various clubs. Expected Saturday 4 Nov 2017.

Rijksmuseum – Reopened in April 2013 after 10 years of renovation, the Rijksmuseum's rich collection (including Rembrandt's Night Watch) is a must-see in Amsterdam. Maelwael. Painter at the Burgundian Court c. 1400, major exhibition of one of the founders of Dutch painting Johan Maelwael (Jean Malouel). Runs 6 Oct 2017 to 7 Jan 2018 at the Philips Wing.

Van Gogh Museum The Dutch in Paris is an exhibition about the attractiveness of Paris to 19th century Dutch artists such as Jan Sluyters, Kees van Dongen, Piet Mondrian and Vincent van Gogh. Runs 13 Oct 2017 to 7 Jan 2018.

Hermitage Amsterdam – Exhibition Dutch Masters runs between 7 Oct 2017 and 27 May 2018. Also at the Hermitage: Outsider Art Museum includes world-class art works by Dutch and international outsider artists; and permanent exhibition Portrait Gallery of the Golden Age.

StedelijkDe Stijl and Metz & Co, members of artistic movement De Stijl created furniture, interior textiles, packaging and design items for the Amsterdam department store Metz & Co. Exhibition runs 14 Oct 2017 until 28 Jan 2018.

Amsterdam MuseumGovert Flinck & Ferdinand Bol, a comprehensive retrospective exhibition of the 17th century painters. In collaboration with Rembrandt House museum. Runs 13 Oct 2017 to 18 Feb 2018.

National Maritime MuseumThe World According to Blaeu, Joan Blaeu's large map of the world (1648) will be on view 14 Apr until 31 Dec 2017.

Tropenmuseum Rhythm & Roots - from blues to hip hop, a journey of musical styles which have roots in Africa. Runs until 7 Jan 2018. Aleppo, before and after exhibition about the war-torn Syrian city, running 20 Apr to 31 Dec 2017.

Huis Marseille Landscape with Tree/ by Jamie Hakesworth, photo exhibition from the British analogue photographer runs 9 Sep to 3 Dec 2017.

FOAMAndré Kertész – The Double of a Life, retrospective exhibition of the Hungarian avant-garde photographer, runs 15 Sep to 6 Dec 2017.

National Holocaust Museum – The newly opened museum presents Tangible Memories from the Jewish Monument, exhibition of objects, photos and documents of people affected by the Holocaust. Opened 2 Sep 2016, ongoing until end 2019.

Jewish Historical MuseumThe Jewish Jukebox, a musical journey featuring 100 years of popular Jewish artists. Runs 30 Jun 2017 to 7 Jan 2018. Charlotte Salomon, exhibition of gouaches from the young Jewish artist who died during World War 2. Runs 20 Oct 2017 to 25 Mar 2018.

EYE FilmApichatpong Weerasethakul, exhibition of the Thai film director runs 16 Sep to 3 Dec 2017.

Van Loon MuseumFerdinand Bol, exhibition of 25 paintings from the 17th century Dutch Master who was the first resident of the house. Runs 6 Oct 2017 to 8 Jan 2018 at the museum coach house.

ARCAM – ARCAM presents a crash course (€7.50) on Amsterdam architecture and urbanism every Friday 1330-1415.

Body Worlds – Display of human body plastinate specimens at the permanent venue on Damrak. The exhibition focuses on happiness.

Ajax home matches at the Amsterdam ArenA:
2017/18 season matches yet to be announced

Olympic Stadium Run – The Olympischstadionloop (41st edition) is a 1km/5km/10km running event which starts and finishes at the Olympic Stadium in the south of Amsterdam. Sunday 12 Nov 2017.

Friday Night Run – a free monthly 1 hour run organised by running group Phanos. Meet at Olympic Stadium Amsterdam at 1930 on Friday 10 Nov 2017.

Movember Run Amsterdam – 5km charitable (and humorous) run around the Vondelpark in Amsterdam to raise funds for Movember. Also counts as the official Dutch Championship (NK) for running with a moustache. Date to be announced.

Inline Skating:
Friday Night Skate – a 20km organised skate around the streets of Amsterdam held every Friday night (2030, weather permitting) from Vondelpark Pavilion.

Sinterklaas Arrives The Dutch version of Santa Claus (or St Nicholas) makes his annual arrival in Amsterdam on Sunday 19 Nov 2017. His boat will sail along the Amstel river before arriving at the Maritime museum at midday. He then jumps on his white horse surrounded by his (controversial) helpers the Zwarte Pieten ("Black Petes") and heads to Dam Square and Leidseplein. This marks the start of the festive season - Sinterklaas is usually celebrated around 5 December.

Bijenkorf store – Check out the lights and window displays at the Bijenkorf department store on Dam Square.

Ice*Amsterdam Get your skates on and hit the spectacular ice rink on Museumplein in the shadow of the Rijksmuseum. Opens mid to late Nov 2017.

Amsterdam Magic Show – Monthly magic and comedy show with international performers to be held at the cabaret-style theatre Paleis van de Weemoed in Amsterdam, Tuesday 7 Nov 2017 at 8pm.

Affordable Art Fair – 11th edition of the international art fair with art objects under €6,000 for sale. At Kromhouthal on the north bank of the IJ, 2-5 Nov 2017.

Fiesta Cubana – DJ Arno hosts the popular monthly Cuban-style salsa night. At Mirror Center (near Muiderpoort Station), €7 entry, Friday 3 Nov 2017 from 10pm. For more info go here

Sieraad Art Fair International jewellery art fair (16th edition). Cultuurpark Westergasfabriek in Amsterdam, 9-12 Nov 2017.

IDFA 2017 – International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam. Annual event (30th edition) showing a wide variety of thought-provoking documentaries. Main locations at Pathé Tuschinski, Het Ketelhuis, de Brakke Grond theatre. Runs 15-26 Nov 2017.

Amsterdam Art Weekend – Special contemporary art event (6th edition) expected to take place on 23-26 Nov 2017. With around 90 events in total (exhibitions, performances, film screenings and debates) at 50 locations around the city.

PAN Amsterdam Large international fair for art, antiques and design. Amsterdam RAI, 19-26 Nov 2017.

Boom Chicago – Comedy and improv show held Wed - Sat and playing at Rozentheater on Rozengracht.

TEDxAmsterdam 2017 – The 9th edition of the speaker's conference event is scheduled to take place at the Stadsschouwburg Theater in Amsterdam. Friday 17 Nov 2017.

3D Print Canal House – See a canal house being constructed using 3D printing techniques and sustainable materials. The location is Asterweg 49, 1031 HM Amsterdam - get the free ferry across to Amsterdam North and walk beyond EYE Film. Visit by appointment only or take the walk-in tour (€7.50) which runs every first Wednesday of the month at 1500.

Muziekgebouw aan 't IJ – Free monthly concert showcasing young classical talent - Thursday 16 Nov 2017 at 1230.

Concertgebouw – Free lunchtime concert generally every Wednesday at 1230. Dates to be announced.

Dutch Opera & Ballet – Free lunchtime concert in the foyer every Tuesday at 1230. Performed by members of Opera Studio, the Netherlands Opera or Dutch Philharmonic orchestra.

De Hallen – Free monthly choir concert in the passageway of De Hallen, Sunday 5 Nov 2017 at 1600.

Market events in Amsterdam

Pure Markt – Regular Market event with high quality local and seasonal produce, music, food stalls and other activities. Runs 1100-1700 at Park Frankendael (26 Nov 2017).

Sunday Market Monthly market event with a focus on fashion, art and design, plus good food and drink. Sunday 5 Nov 2017 from 1200-1800 at Cultuurpark Westergasfabriek.
