What's On in Amsterdam June 2014

June sees the city's popular Holland Festival running for most of the month.

Museums & Exhibitions

Rijksmuseum – Reopened in April 2013 after 10 years of renovation, the Rijksmuseum's rich collection (including Rembrandt's Night Watch) is a must-see in Amsterdam. Cover up! Coats & Jackets 1630-1940, an exhibit of 40 coats from the Rijksmuseum collection, closes 8 June 2014. Art is Therapy, exhibition where British writer-philosophers Alain De Botton and John Armstrong show what art can mean. Runs until 7 Sep 2014. Calder at the Rijksmuseum, freely accessible exhibition of monumental sculptures from American Alexander Calder on display in the outdoor gallery. 21 June to 5 October 2014.

Hermitage AmsterdamExpedition Silk Road, Treasures from the Hermitage, antiquities from the age-old trade route from east to west. This exhibition runs until 5 Sep 2014.

StedelijkMarcel Wanders: Pinned Up at the Stedelijk, large survey of this distinguished Dutch designer. Runs until 15 June 2014. Jeff Wall: Tableaux, Pictures, Photographs, 1996–2013, a detailed selection of work from the leading Canadian photographer. Until 3 Aug 2014. Supermodels, a survey in miniature of iconic Dutch designs using 3D printing runs 6-9 June 2014. Opera at the Stedelijk – poster and costume designs from the Dutch National Opera, runs 20 June to 19 Oct 2014.

Anne Frank HouseThe helpers of the Secret Annexe – temporary exhibition focussing on the people who helped the Frank family go into hiding. Runs to 11 Oct 2014. Also see below in 'Other Events' section for details of the major new Anne play.

Amsterdam MuseumVan Oostsanen – retrospective exhibition of early Dutch master Jacob Cornelisz van Oostsanen (1470-1533). Runs until 29 June 2014. Converted Becoming Muslim - Being Muslim looks at the social development of some Dutch people converting to Islam. Runs to 27 July 2014.

Nieuwe Kerk World Press Photo 2014 featuring the best of the year's photo journalism, runs 18 Apr to 22 June 2014. Nieuwe Kerk Back in Time runs 28 June to 14 Sep 2014.

Oude KerkYou don't know where you are going, exhibition about home and leaving for places unknown. Runs 17 May to 15 Jun 2014.

Tropenmuseum Black & White – 150 years after the abolition of slavery, this exhibition asks who is black and who is white. Featuring photos, videos, personal stories and historical documents. Runs until 1 July 2014. Dutch Doc Photo Award 2014, documetary photographers portray everyday life. Until 6 July 2014.

Allard Pierson MuseumThe Crimea. Gold and Secrets of the Black Sea archaeological exhibition – extended run to 31 Aug 2014.

Rembrandt House Master of Melancholy: Etchings by Livio Ceschin, exhibition of 50 prints from the modern-day Italian etcher. Open 10 May to 29 Jun 2014.

Jewish Historical Museum Roman Vishniac (re)discovered, a photo exhibition of Jewish life in Eastern Europe by Russian-American photographer Roman Vishniac (1897-1990). Runs to 24 Aug 2014. Holland's most popular actress, exhibition about the life of Esther de Boer-van Rijk, runs 19 May to 28 Sep 2014.

FOAMLarry Clark Tulsa & Teenage Lust, controversial photo exhibition on youth culture, showing 13 Jun to 12 Sep 2014.

Huis Marseille Apartheid and After, a photo exhibition on South Africa ends 8 June 2014. Taco Anema / Dutch Committees highlights the peculiar Dutch phenomenon of creating committees for various social issues. Runs 14 Jun to 7 Sep 2014. Guido Guidi / Veramente by shows stark Italian urban landscapes, runs 15 June to 7 Sep 2014.

StadsarchiefAmsterdam! Ed van der Elsken, an exhibition of old photos of Amsterdam taken between 1947 and 1970. Opens 6 Jun, runs to 14 Sep 2014.

Amsterdam ExpoThe Art of the Brick – internationally renowned exhibition featuring large-scale sculptures made from Lego bricks comes to Amsterdam. Runs 29 May to 14 Sep 2014.

Museum of Bags and PursesWelcome Abroad – discover the history of travel and development of suitcases. Runs to 31 Aug 2014.

Museum Van Loon – Exhibition Children's Portraits, diverse portrait collection from the Van Loon family collection. Closes 9 June 2014. 150 years carriages in Vondelpark Amsterdam, photo exhibition about the days when well-to-do families used horse-drawn carriages to travel into Vondelpark. Runs 15 June to 18 August 2014.

Willet-HolthuysenSilver Miniatures, presentation of part of the museum's collection of Dutch silver miniatures from the 17th to 19th centuries. Runs until 31 Aug 2014.

CoBrA MuseumFrom the Guggenheim Collection to the Cobra Museum Amstelveen, see CoBrA works from the Guggenheim (New York) collection. Runs until 31 Aug 2014.

Inline Skating:
Friday Night Skate – a 20km organised skate around the streets of Amsterdam held every Friday night (2030, weather permitting) from Vondelpark Pavilion (former Film Museum).

Urbanathlon – Amsterdam ArenA will host some 3,500 urban athletes taking on an obstacle course of up to 12km. 15 June 2014.

Other Events in and around Amsterdam

Holland Festival – The country’s biggest arts performance festival running from 1-29 June 2014. The event includes theatre, visual arts, classical, dance, opera and film – attracting a high calibre performers both from Netherlands and internationally. Venues include the Carré Theatre, Muziekgebouw aan 't IJ, Muziektheater, Stadsschouwburg and Westergasfabriek.

Public Holidays June 2014 – 9 June (Whit Monday).

Fiesta Cubana – Popular monthly Cuban-style salsa night at the Badcuyp. €5 entry, Friday 6 June 2014 from 10pm.

Open Garden Days – 30 private gardens in Amsterdam open their doors to the public – held on the weekend of 20-22 June 2014.

Architecture Day – Head over to Amsterdam's architecture centre ARCAM (near NEMO) where over 21-22 June 2014 special architecture tours will be available.

ITs Festival Amsterdam – International theatre school festival in Amsterdam to be held between 20-27 June 2014 featuring this year’s arts graduates. Various genres on show – acting, dance, singing, mime artists – and many shows are English or subtitled.

Amsterdam Open Air – Electronic music festival in the open. At Gaasperpark on 7-8 June 2014.

Festival 5D – NDSM wharf in Amsterdam north hosts this five senses-inspired festival event over 28-29 June 2014.

Eko Town – Organic lifestyle festival with food, music, sports and kids events. Runs on 21-22 June 2014 at Amsterdamse Bos in Amstelveen.

De Pure Markt – Special Sunday market event (hours: 1100-1800) with a focus on selling local, seasonal and healthy produce of high quality. With music and other activities, cafe and food stalls. 8 June 2014 at Amstelpark; 29 June 2014 at Park Frankandael, Amsterdam.

Sunday Market - Monthly market event with a focus on fashion, art and design, plus good food and drink. Sunday 8 Jun from 1200 at Westergasfabriek.

NeighbourFood Market – Another Sunday market event (from 1100) featuring local food products. Westergasfabriek on 14-15 June 2014 (weekend edition).

IJ-Hallen – Huge weekend flea market event held at NDSM-wharf in north Amsterdam. May 31-Jun 1 and 21-22 Jun 2014.

Dutch Raw Food Festival – Raw food event with demonstrations, workshops and presentations – some in English. Location is the Boerderij Langerlust (farm) near the Gaasperplas in south-east Amsterdam. 1 June 2014.

Het Hoofdgerecht Food Festival – "Main course" outdoor food festival event takes place at Het Stenen Hoofd near Westerdok (west of central station). 12-15 June 2014.

Viva Las Vega’s Food Festival – Vegetarian/Vegan food event with workshops, markets and music. To be held at Oldschool (Gaasterlandstraat 5) in Amsterdam Zuid on 29 June 2014.

Netherlands Opera – Perform "Falstaff", Muziektheater Amsterdam, various shows 7-30 June 2014.

Jazz at the Lake – Open air jazz festival to be held at Marina Het Bosch, Nieuwe Meer (south of Amsterdam) on 7 June 2014.

Robeco SummerNights 2014 – Series of summer concerts (classical, pop and jazz) featuring international performers at the Concertgebouw. Starts 28 June 2014 to the end of August.

Boom Chicago – Comedy and improv show held almost daily – now playing at Rozentheater on Rozengracht.

Superburger – American comedian Greg Shapiro holds a one-man show sharing his insights into living 20 years in the Netherlands. 12 June 2014 (2000) at Westergasfabriek.

North Sea Jazz Club – Hosts a wide variety of jazz, funk, soul and world music every weekend (Friday & Saturday) at the Westergasfabriek. Dinner concerts include a 3 course meal by the in-house chef.

Artzuid Junior – 20 works of art made by children will be on display throughout Amsterdam's Vondelpark between 15 June and 24 August 2014.

ANNE – Major ongoing theatre production of the diary of Anne Frank covering the 2 years Anne and family spent hiding in the Secret Annex. Held at the new Theater Amsterdam, a purpose-built theatre with 11,000 seats in the Westelijke Houthavens district, just north-west of the centre. Opened in May, the play generally runs Wednesday to Sunday with shows afternoon 1400-1710 and/or evening 2000-2310. There is an onsite restaurant (Boven de Planken) serving lunch or dinner 2 1/2 hours before the show. Note, the play is performed in Dutch, however a multilingual translation system for foreign visitors using tablets should be up and running by 1 July. Tickets on sale for dates up to 30 Nov 2014.

Mundial Festival 2014 – World music festival to be held in Spoorzone Tilburg during 28-29 June 2014. Tilburg is 90 minutes south by train from Amsterdam.

Westerkerk – Free lunchtime organ concert every Friday at 1300.
