What's On in Amsterdam June 2016

June sees the city's popular Holland Festival running for most of the month.

Museums & Exhibitions

Rijksmuseum – Reopened in April 2013 after 10 years of renovation, the Rijksmuseum's rich collection (including Rembrandt's Night Watch) is a must-see in Amsterdam. Adriaen van de Velde: Master of the Dutch Landscape is an exhibition of paintings and drawings of one of the Golden Age's greatest artists. Runs 24 June to 25 Sep 2016. Japan Modern: Elise Wessels Collection shows a series of 20th century Japanese prints, 24 June to 11 Sep 2016. Document Netherlands: Education, photo exhibition by Carel van Hees about education in Rotterdam. Runs 24 March to 12 June 2016.

Van Gogh Museum Easy Virtue, an exhibition about prostitution as seen through the eyes of Van Gogh and other well-known 19th century artists. Runs 19 Feb to 19 June 2016.

Hermitage Amsterdam – New exhibition Catherine The Great opens 18 June 2016 and will run until 15 Jan 2017. Portrait Gallery of the Golden Age brings together for the first time 30 colossal 17th century group portraits from Amsterdam Museum and Rijksmuseum. Runs to the end of 2016.

StedelijkLiving in the Amsterdam School brings furniture and interior accessories from the Amsterdam School style to international attention. Runs 9 April to 28 Aug 2016. Avery Singer - Scenes, solo exhibition of the American artist with works from 2012, runs 23 April to 2 Oct 2016.

Beurs van BerlageThe Art of Banksy, sizeable collection (over 85 art pieces and installations) of the iconic British street artist will be on show in Amsterdam from 18 June to 30 Sep 2016.

MOCO Museum – This new modern and contemporary art museum on Museumplein opens with 2 exhibitions from icons Banksy and Andy Warhol. Banksy: Laugh Now (includes Beanfield) runs 9 April to 4 Sep 2016. Warhol: Royal (features the Marilyn work) runs 9 April to 3 July 2016.

Tropenmuseum Rhythm & Roots - from blues to hip hop, a journey of musical styles which have roots in Africa. Runs until 13 May to 30 Oct 2016.

Rembrandt House Rembrandt, the Etcher – selection of some 50 etchings from the Rembrandt House collection. Runs 28 May to 18 Sep 2016.

Amsterdam MuseumMade in Amsterdam – a major exhibition of 100 works made by important artists in the city over the last century. Runs 11 March to 31 July 2016.

Nieuwe Kerk World Press Photo is a photo exhibition showcasing the best in news photography. Runs 16 April to 10 July 2016.

Oude KerkOnce in a Lifetime, exhibition curated by Nina Folkersma where eight artists shed light on various aspects of life and mortality. Runs 12 May to 28 Aug 2016.

FOAMCalais - From Jungle To City, exhibition from Henk Wildschut about the refugee crisis, runs 8 April to 5 June 2016. Disfarmer, The Vintage Prints features portrait photos of residents from a small rural town in Arkansas, runs 18 March to 5 June 2016. Helmut Newton - A Retrospective, major exhibition of one of the 20th century's most iconic photographers. Runs 17 June to 4 Sep 2016.

Huis Marseille Jeroen Robert Kramer / Une Femme, photographic narrative on the life of an older Lebanese man in Beirut. Runs 12 March to 5 June 2016. Stephen Shore / Retrospective, exhibition of the pioneering American photographer covering the period 1960 to 2013. Runs 10 June to 4 Sep 2016.

EYE FilmMaster of Light - Robby Müller, exhibition of this renowned Dutch cinematographer who opens up his personal archive of videos, photos and notes. Runs 4 June to 4 Sep 2016.

Stadsarchief (City Archives)City Artists of Amsterdam, exhibition of 15 artists featuring new images of the city. Runs 27 May to 11 Sep 2016.

Dutch Resistance MuseumWorld War Two Today, exhibition by Dutch photographer Roger Cremers who travelled throughout Europe capturing images of tourists at war sites and commemorations. Runs 22 April to 25 Sep 2016.

National Holocaust Museum – The newly opened museum presents its first exhibition: The Demise of Abraham Reiss, a series of 9 harrowing paintings by noted Dutch actor and artist Jeroen Krabbé about the life and death of his grandfather. Runs 16 May to 2 Oct 2016.

Jewish Historical MuseumAmy Winehouse: A Family Portrait, intimate exhibition about the life of the singer and her Jewish-London roots. Runs 29 Feb to 4 Sep 2016.

Museum of Bags and PursesStreet Couture, how haute couture and street fashion meet. Runs 10 Jan to 5 June 2016.

ARCAM – Architecture Centre Amsterdam presents an exhibition 100 Years of Inspiration, celebrating the centenary of the Amsterdam School of architecture and its influence on contemporary buildings. Runs 14 April to 30 Sep 2016, free entry.

Artis Royal ZooSummer Nights. Every Saturday in June, July and August, the zoo remains open until sunset with food, events and live music.

Lloyd HotelEmigrants at Lloyd Hotel, exhibition on 4th floor about migrants departing Amsterdam nearly 100 years ago. The Lloyd Hotel and surrounding shipping buildings facilitated East European emigrants as they departed to south America. Free entry, runs to end 2016.

Body Worlds – Display of human body plastinate specimens at the permanent venue on Damrak. The exhibition focuses on happiness.

Kunsthal (Rotterdam)Philippe Halsman: Astonish Me! – Retrospective exhibition of one of the 20th century's greatest photographers. Runs 27 Feb to 12 June 2016.

Dutch Atheltics Championships (NK) – Annual Dutch Championships meet takes place at Olympic Stadium Amsterdam 16-19 June 2016. A warm-up for the European Championships event in July hosted by Amsterdam.

Deloitte Ladies Open – European Ladies Tour event at the International Golf Club Amsterdam. 19-21 June 2016.

ICAN Amsterdam – Olympic and half-distance triathlon events around the Amstel area in Amsterdam. 26 June 2016.

Dutch Moto GP – Popular motorcycle racing event held at the Assen TT circuit. 24-26 June 2016.

Inline Skating:
Friday Night Skate – a 20km organised skate around the streets of Amsterdam held every Friday night (20:30, weather permitting) from Vondelpark Pavilion (former Film Museum).

Other Events in and around Amsterdam

Holland Festival – The country’s biggest arts performance festival running from 4-26 June 2016. The event includes theatre, visual arts, classical, dance, opera and film – attracting a high calibre performers both from Netherlands and internationally. Venues include the Carré Theatre, Muziekgebouw aan 't IJ, Concertgebouw, Stadsschouwburg and Westergasfabriek.

Fiesta Cubana – Popular monthly Cuban-style salsa night at Mirror Center (near Amsterdam Muiderpoort Station). €7 entry, Friday 3 June 2016 from 22:00.

KunstRai - Longest running art fair in the Netherlands (now in its 32nd year) offering contemporary Dutch art for sale with more than 70 quality galleries. On 1 to 5 June 2016  at Amsterdam RAI.

Open Garden Days – 25 private gardens in Amsterdam open their doors to the public – held on the weekend of 17-19 June 2016.

ITs Festival Amsterdam – International theatre school festival in Amsterdam to be held between 22-30 June 2016 featuring this year’s arts graduates. Various genres on show – acting, dance, singing, mime artists – and many shows are English or surtitled.

Amsterdam Open Air – Electronic music festival in the open. Expected at Gaasperpark on 4 June 2016.

Taste of Amsterdam – Food festival over 4 days at Amstelpark with various events held including lectures, cooking competitions and wine-tasting. 2-5 June 2016.

Dutch Raw Food Festival – Raw food event (4th edition) with demonstrations, workshops and presentations – some in English. Location is the Boerderij Langerlust (farm) near the Gaasperplas in south-east Amsterdam. Sunday 12 June 2016.

Viva Las Vega’s Food Festival – Vegetarian/Vegan food event with workshops, markets and music. To be held at Oldschool (Gaasterlandstraat 5) in Amsterdam Zuid, expected 25 June 2016.

YogaFest Amsterdam – A 2 day yoga festival in Amsterdam on 18-19 June 2016 at Westergasfabriek.

Amsterdam Roots Festival – International music festival (19th edition) with indoor concerts running 29 June to 3 July 2016 at venues Melkweg, Tolhuistuin, Bimhuis and North Sea Jazz Club.

Dutch National Opera & Ballet – Perform Tchaikovsky’s Pique Dame (Queen of Spades) opera at Muziektheater Amsterdam, various shows from 9-30 June 2016.

Toneelgroep Amsterdam – Amsterdam's renowned theatre company performs shows in Dutch which have live English surtitles above the stage at the Stadsschouwburg theatre. Husbands and Wives (a Woody Allen screenplay) is performed at 2000 daily between 22-26 June 2016.

NOOR Photography – This Amsterdam-based photo agency will hold a series of public events: NOOR on Africa (3 June 2016, 2000 Pakhuis de Zwijger) showcases images from the African continent; get your portrait taken at Amsterdam Portrait Studio (4 Jun 2016, X BANK).

BUG (David Bowie Special) – HarrimanSteel presents a special creative event which pays homage to David Bowie and his musical genius, hosted by UK comedian Adam Buxton at De School Amsterdam on 30 June 2016.

Robeco SummerNights 2016 – Series of summer concerts (classical, pop and jazz) featuring international performers at the Concertgebouw. Expected end June 2016 to the end of August.

Architecture Day – Head over to Amsterdam's architecture centre ARCAM (near NEMO) where special architecture tours will be available. 18-19 June 2016.

Dara O'Briain Crowd Tickler, intelligent stand-up shows from the Irish comedian at Meervaart theatre in Amsterdam on 31 May, 1 and 3 June 2016.

Boom Chicago – Comedy and improv show held almost daily – now playing at Rozentheater on Rozengracht.

North Sea Jazz Club – Hosts a wide variety of jazz, funk, soul and world music every weekend (Friday & Saturday) at the Westergasfabriek. Dinner concerts include a 3 course meal by the in-house chef.

ANNE – Major theatre production of the diary of Anne Frank covering the 2 years Anne and family spent hiding in the Secret Annex. Held at the Theater Amsterdam, a purpose-built theatre with 11,000 seats in the Westelijke Houthavens district, just north-west of the centre. The play is performed in Dutch, however there is a multilingual translation system for foreign visitors using tablets. Tickets on sale for various Sunday dates in June 2016.

Sky The Musical – A groundbreaking 3D musical also held at Theater Amsterdam about the problems of a teenage girl. In Dutch but available with multilingual translation options. Tickets for dates Thu-Sat in June 2016.

Expat Cinema – LAB111 cinema in Amsterdam's Old West hosts a monthly foreign film (on a Thursday night) with English subtitles. The Assassin (Taiwan) is screened on 23 June 2016.

Mundial Festival 2016 – Major world music festival to be held in Spoorzone Tilburg during 25-26 June 2016. Tilburg is 90 minutes south by train from Amsterdam.

Concertgebouw – Free lunchtime concert to be held on 1/8/15/22/29 June 2016 at 12:30. Get there early to ensure admission.

Westerkerk – Free lunchtime organ concert every Friday at 13:00.

Vondelpark open air theatre – Free concerts running during the weekend (Fri-Sun), from June to August.
