What's On in Amsterdam June 2012

June sees the city's popular Holland Festival running most of the month.

Museums & Exhibitions

Hermitage Amsterdam – "Rubens, Van Dyck & Jordaens" – Flemish paintings from the Hermitage (extended run until 15th June). New exhibition will be "Impressionism: Sensation & Inspiration - Highlights from the Hermitage" which opens on 16th June 2012.

EYE Film Institute – A new venue for films and exhibitions located on the north bank of the IJ in Amsterdam, opposite central station. The first exhibition is "Found Footage: Cinema Exposed" ends 3rd June 2012. Following that is a comprehensive exhibition on Stanley Kubrick, one of the most influential film directors of the 20th century – opens 21st June (to 9th September 2012).

Van Gogh Museum – "Dreams of Nature. Symbolism from Van Gogh to Kandinsky"– exhibition about the late 19th century Symbolism movement. Runs to 17th June 2012. "Beauty in Abundance" – exhibition showing highlights of the museum's print collection, including Bonnard, Gauguin, and Toulouse-Lautrec. Ongoing until 23rd September 2012.

Amsterdam Museum – "Amsterdam DNA" – check out the relatively new permanent exhibition at Amsterdam Museum. The museum will also be celebrating 400 years of diplomatic relations between Netherlands and Turkey with various exhibits running until August 2012.

Tropenmuseum – "Culture Couture – Fashion in the Tropenmuseum" – Young fashion talent from of Antwerp’s Academy of Fine Arts showcase a selection of spectacular creations inspired by other cultures. Runs to 26th June 2012. "Death Matters" – a look at how different cultures deal with death. Runs to 26th August 2012.

Allard Pierson Museum – "Horse and Rider: From Homer to Genghis Khan" – archaeological exhibition running until 16th September 2012.

FOAM Photo Museum – "Nina Poppe - Ama"- photos of Japanese fisherwomen from the island of Ise-Shima. Until 27th June 2012. "Uncovered Expo: Wall of Fame"– exhibition of vinyl album cover sleeves as selected by FOAM's Facebook followers. Runs to July 15th 2012. "Ron Galella - Paparazzo Extraordinaire!" - photo exhibition from 8th June (to 23rd August 2012).

Huis Marseille – "Guy Tillim – Second Nature" – Striking images of Polynesian islands by the South African photographer. Ends 3rd June 2012. "Chino Otsuka – A World of Memories" – Self portrait photos as a means to preserving memories. Opens 9th June (until 9th September 2012).

Van Loon Museum – "Wealth of the Golden Age" – Exhibition of paintings by Michiel van Musscher (1645 -1705). Ending on 10th June 2012.

Museum Geelvinck Hinlopen Huis – "Yalis along the Bosphorous: Living in Historic Splendour" – Exhibition of photos of yalis and city mansion interiors around Istanbul. Includes a Turkish Tent overlooking the house garden. Part of the 400 year celebration of Dutch-Turkish relations. Runs until 11th June 2012.

Jewish Historical Museum – "Else Berg and Mommie Schwarz: Artist couple in the Dutch avant-garde" – 80 paintings and drawings on display, running until 24th June 2012. "Emmy Andriesse: Photographs of Jewish Amsterdam, War and Liberation" on until 30th September 2012.

Bijbels Museum – "Belief in Nature" – Exhibition of flower paintings by Bosschaert, Davidz. de Heem, Ruysch and van Huysum. Running until 30th September 2012.

Verzetsmuseum – "Amsterdam through the lens of a secret camera" - wartime photo scenes at the Dutch Resistance Museum. Running to 17th June 2012.

Bags & Purses Museum – "Out on the Town!" - the development of bags and shoes from 1900 until today. Runs throughout June and until 2nd September 2012.

Stadsarchief – "Isaac Israels in Amsterdam" – Exhibition of impressionist paintings of the city. Opens 15th June, runs until 26th August 2012.

Nieuwe Kerk – Throughout June the church is holding a "Sacred Music Month" with a comprehensive program of concerts.

Oude Kerk – "World Press Photo"– Photo journalism exhibition. Runs to 17th June 2012.

Rijksmuseum Schiphol – "Dutch Flowers" - 17th century paintings on show at Schiphol airport at the small Riksmuseum exhibition on Holland Boulevard. Free entry, runs to 25th June 2012.

Football:
International friendly / Euro 2012 warm-up at Amsterdam ArenA:

Unicef Open – International grass court tournament (men’s ATP and women’s WTA) at the Autotron Rosmalen near Den Bosch, 1 hour south of Amsterdam. Used as a warm-up to Wimbledon for some players. 17th-23rd June 2012.

Running:
Ladiesrun Rotterdam – 5km or 10km running event for ladies only. Sunday 10th June 2012.

Gymnastics:
Dutch Championships (NK) – Watch top Dutch gymnasts in action at Rotterdam's Ahoy on 16-17th June.

Fiesta Cubana – Popular monthly Cuban-style salsa night at the Badcuyp. €5 entry, Friday 1st June 2012 from 10pm.

Open Garden Days – 30 private gardens in Amsterdam open their doors to the public – held on the weekend of 15th-17th June 2012.

Holland Festival – The country’s biggest arts performance festival running from 1st to 28th June 2012. The event includes theatre, visual arts, classical, dance, opera and film – attracting a high calibre performers both from Netherlands and internationally. Venues include the main theatres around the city.

ITs Festival Amsterdam – Theatre festival in Amsterdam to be held between 21st-28th June 2012 featuring this year’s arts graduates. Various genres on show – acting, dance, singing, mime artists – and many shows are English or subtitled.

Sunday Market – Sunday market with fashion, design, arts, food and kids stuff. Cultuurpark Westergasfabriek on 3rd June (1200-1800).

De Pure Markt – Special Sunday market event (hours: 1100-1800) with a focus on selling local, seasonal and healthy produce of high quality. With music and other activities, cafe and food stalls. 3rd June at Stadshart Amstelveen; 10th June at Amstelpark; 24th June at Park Frankandael, Amsterdam.

Mundial Festival 2012 – World music festival to be held in Leijpark Tilburg during 16-17th June. Tilburg is 90 minutes south by train from Amsterdam.

Free Concerts

Vondelpark open air theatre – Free concerts running during the weekend (Fri-Sun), from 3rd June onwards (until 2nd September).

Concertgebouw – Classical concert on Wednesday at 1230 in the Kleine Zaal (6th/13th/20th June 2012).

Westerkerk – Free lunchtime organ concert every Friday at 1300.

Bimhuis – Jazz venue has free "Monday Match Dance & Music Impro Lab" on 4th June (2030). Free Session event held every Tuesday evening at 2200 in the cafe. Also, free entry to the Conservatorium of Amsterdam's Graduation Jazz Festival 2012 (23rd June at 2000) and Keep An Eye on Summer Jazz workshop (28th June at 1930).
