June sees the city's popular Holland Festival running for most of the month.

Museums & Exhibitions

Rijksmuseum – Reopened in April 2013 after 10 years of renovation, the Rijksmuseum's rich collection (including Rembrandt's Night Watch) is a must-see in Amsterdam. Music at Home, exhibition featuring musical instruments runs until 25 Jun 2017. The following 3 exhibitions run 17 Jun to 17 Sep 2017:  Small Wonders, exhibit of carved miniatures; New Realities. Photography in the Ninenteenth Century, major retrospective exhibition from the extensive Rijksmuseum collection; Sea Views, exhibition of contemporary seascape photos.

Van Gogh Museum Prints in Paris 1900: From Elite to the Street, exhibition marking the revolution of printmaking in Paris in the late 19th century. Runs 3 Mar to 11 Jun 2017 .

Hermitage Amsterdam – Exhibition 1917. From Romanov to Revolution is running 4 Feb until 17 Sep 2017. Also at the Hermitage: Outsider Art Museum includes world-class art works by Dutch and international outsider artists. China: Passion, Religion and Power in Dutch and Chinese Outsider Art exhibition runs until 5 Jun 2017; and permanent exhibition Portrait Gallery of the Golden Age.

Amsterdam MuseumMaurice Boyer - at home in Amsterdam, exhibition of the Dutch photo-journalist focussing on Amsterdam squatters in the 1970s and the more recent refugee crisis. Runs 16 Dec 2016 to 14 Jun 2017. Puck & Hans, the first retrospective exhibition of the iconic Dutch fashion duo. Runs 9 Jun until 3 Sep 2017.

Stadsarchief (City Archives)Tourists in Amsterdam, exhibition from Dutch photographer Marc Faasse using a unique 9 metre long selfie stick at some of the city's tourist hotspots. Runs in main hall (free entry) 19 May to 9 Jul 2017. An Improved City of Amsterdam and General Expansion plan 1935-2017, photo exhibition showing urban developments of Amsterdam. Runs 17 Mar to 16 Jul 2017. 130 years Carré, a look at the history of one of Amsterdam's iconic theaters. 10 Mar to 11 Jun 2017.

National Maritime MuseumDrive | 100 years of Collecting, exhibition about the history of the museum's unique collection. Runs 1 Oct 2016 to 2 Jul 2017. The World According to Blaeu, Joan Blaeu's large map of the world (1648) will be on view 14 Apr until 31 Dec 2017.

StedelijkChris Beekman, De Stijl Defector, exhibition of the politically active artist from the early 20th century. Runs 8 Apr to 17 Sep 2017. Jana Euler, High in Amsterdam, The Sky of Amsterdam exhibition of the contemporary German abstract artist inspired by the digital age. Runs 20 May to 15 Oct 2017. Edward Krasinski, first retrospective exhibition in the Netherlands of the avant-garde East European artist featuring sculptures and installations. Running 24 Jun - 15 Oct 2017.

MOCO Museum – This new modern and contemporary art museum on Museumplein. Banksy: Laugh Now (includes Beanfield) and Dalí: Genius have extended runs until 31 Aug 2017.

Tropenmuseum Rhythm & Roots - from blues to hip hop, a journey of musical styles which have roots in Africa. Runs until 7 Jan 2018. Aleppo, before and after exhibition about the war-torn Syrian city, running 20 Apr to 31 Dec 2017.

Rembrandt House Rembrandt and Jan Six. The Etching and the Friendship, exhibition about the bond between the 17th century artists. Runs 6 May to 3 Sep 2017.

Huis Marseille Jeff Cowen/Photoworks, exhibition of the Berlin-based American photogrpaher. In Egypt/Travellers and Photographers 1850-1900, diverse collection of photos from the 19th century. Both running 11 Mar to 4 Jun 2017. Revealing Reality/Andres Serrano, exhibition from the American photographer; Lionel Wendt/Ceylon, collection of prints from Ceylon (Sri Lanka), both run 10 Jun to 3 Sep 2017.

FOAMDaisuke Yokota - Matter, installations from the Japanese photographer. Runs 17 Mar to 4 Jun 2017. William Eggleston - Los Alamos, photos of road trips in southern US between 1966 and 1974. Runs 17 Mar to 7 Jun 2017. Adam Jeppesen - Out of Camp, exhibition of the Danish artist featuring a journey from North Pole to South Pole, runs 16 Jun to 27 Aug 2017. Gordon Parks - I Am You, major retrospective exhibition of the African-American photographer runs 16 Jun to 6 Sep 2017.

Anne Frank HouseA Family Portrait 1920-1942, temporary exhibition showing 50 photos from the Anne Frank archive. From 15 Dec 2016 until 15 Jun 2017.

National Holocaust Museum – The newly opened museum presents Tangible Memories from the Jewish Monument, exhibition of objects, photos and documents of people affected by the Holocaust. Opened 2 Sep 2016, ongoing until end 2019. From Oblivion, photo exhibition from German-Jewish photographers Annemie and Helmuth Wolff who fled to Amsterdam in the 1930s. Runs 27 Mar to 3 Sep 2017.

Jewish Historical MuseumSamuel Jessurun de Mesquita, exhibition of the Jewish artist, runs 23 Jan to 18 Jun 2017. From Fauvism to Surrealism: Jewish Avant-Garde Artists from Hungary, runs 29 May to 24 Sep 2017. The Jewish Jukebox, a musical journey featuring 100 years of popular Jewish artists. Runs 30 Jun 2017 to 7 Jan 2018.

Nieuwe Kerk World Press Photo is a photo exhibition showcasing the best in news photography. Runs 15 April to 9 July 2017.

Oude KerkSarah van Sonsbeeck, exhibition looking at the relationship between the old church and the sea. Runs 19 May to 17 Sep 2017.

EYE FilmMartin Scorsese – The Exhibition about the world renowned director will run 25 May to 3 Sep 2017.

ARTIS – Amsterdam's Royal Zoo presents Summer Nights each Saturday evening in June, July and August. Open until sunset, the evening includes workshops (edible gardens), performances and special guided tours.

ARCAM – ARCAM presents a crash course (€7.50) on Amsterdam architecture and urbanism every Friday 1330-1415.

Museum of Bags and PursesIt's a Men's World, a look at bags for men throughout history right up to the modern day. Runs 11 Mar to 27 Aug 2017.

Beurs van Berlage Leonardo da Vinci - Artist - Inventor - Genius, exhibition featuring replica works and prototype inventions from the Italian master. Runs 27 Jan to 20 Jun 2017.

Body Worlds – Display of human body plastinate specimens at the permanent venue on Damrak. The exhibition focuses on happiness.

Harry Potter: The Exhibition – Experiential exhibition featuring dramatic dispalys from the world of Harry Potter. This international expo visits the Netherlands from 11 Feb to 30 Jun 2017. Location is Berlijnplein (next to Cinemec) in the city of Utrecht.

Gaasperplasrun – 1km, 2km, 5km and 10km runs around the Gaasperplaas, a lake in south-east Amsterdam. 23rd edition on 11 June 2017.

Ladiesrun Rotterdam – 5km, 7.5km and 10km running event for ladies only. 11th edition due Sunday 11 Jun 2017.

Triathlon:
Tri Amsterdam – International triathlon event which offers half-distance and full Olympic distance courses around the Amstel river area. Saturday 17 June 2017.

MotorSport:
Dutch Moto GP – Popular motorcycle racing event held at the Assen TT circuit. 23-25 June 2017.

Inline Skating:
Friday Night Skate – a 20km organised skate around the streets of Amsterdam held every Friday night (20:30, weather permitting) from Vondelpark Pavilion (former Film Museum).

Netherlands Public Holidays June 2017 – 5 Jun (Whit Monday)

Holland Festival – The country’s biggest arts performance festival running from 3-25 Jun 2017. The event includes theatre, visual arts, classical, dance, opera and film – attracting a high calibre performers both from Netherlands and internationally. Venues include the Carré Theatre, Muziekgebouw aan 't IJ, Concertgebouw, Stadsschouwburg and Westergasfabriek.

Fiesta Cubana – Popular monthly Cuban-style salsa night at Mirror Center (near Amsterdam Muiderpoort Station). €7 entry, Friday 2 Jun 2017 from 10pm.

Amsterdam Magic Show – Monthly magic and comedy show with international performers to be held at the cabaret-style theatre Paleis van de Weemoed in Amsterdam, Tuesday 6 Jun 2017 at 8pm.

De Balie – The multimedia venue near Leidseplein in Amsterdam hosts regular events about current affairs, politics and culture. How to Brexit: The British Elections, journalist Fintan O’Toole and author Felix Klos talk Brexit, UK elections and the consequences on 6 Jun 2017 (8pm). Re:Thinking Europe is a discussion on the EU's future with German historian Philipp Blom and French-Greek academic Kalypso Nicolaidis, 27 Jun 2017 (8pm).

Artzuid – International art sculpture route in the south of Amsterdam from 19 May to 17 Sep 2017. The 2.5km route takes in Apollolaan, Minervalaan, Churchilllaan and the Zuidas business district.

KunstRai (Art Amsterdam) – Longest running art fair in the Netherlands (now in its 33rd year) offering contemporary Dutch art for sale with more than 70 quality galleries. This year's guest city is Antwerp. On 31 May to 5 Jun 2017 at Amsterdam RAI.

Open Garden Days – Some 30 private gardens in Amsterdam open their doors to the public – held on the weekend of 16-18 Jun 2017. A 3-day pass to all participating gardens costs €20, can be bought at the Van Loon museum.

ITs Festival Amsterdam – International theatre school festival in Amsterdam held every June featuring the crop of the year’s theatre and dance graduates. In 2017 the festival lost its public funding and is under new management - the 28th edition of the festival will run 21-25 Jun 2017.

Amsterdam Open Air – Outdoor electronic music festival, 7th edition to be held at Gaasperpark on 3-4 Jun 2017.

The Flying Dutch – The top ten Dutch DJs simultaneously play Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Eindhoven using a helicopter as shuttle. Amsterdam event is at Olympic Stadium on 3 Jun 2017.

Taste of Amsterdam – Food festival over 4 days at Amstelpark with various events held including lectures, cooking competitions and wine-tasting. 2-5 Jun 2017.

Dutch Raw Food Festival – Raw food event (5th year) with demonstrations, workshops and presentations – some in English. Location is the Boerderij Langerlust (farm) near the Gaasperplas in south-east Amsterdam. Sunday 18 Jun 2017.

Bacchus Wine Festival – Outdoor food and wine event in Amsterdamse Bos woods on the outskirts of the city. Over 2 consecutive weekends, 9-11 and 16-18 Jun 2017.

YogaFest Amsterdam – A 2 day yoga festival in Amsterdam on 17-18 Jun 2017 at Westergasfabriek.

Amsterdam Roots Festival – International music festival (20th edition) with indoor concerts running 21-25 Jun 2017 at venues Melkweg, Tolhuistuin, Bimhuis and North Sea Jazz Club.

Dutch National Opera Ballet – Various performances over Jun 2017 including ballet productions Shostakovich Trilogy and New Moves 2017; and operas Marian Vespers, Rigoletto and Salome.

Hans Zimmer – Live music from the German soundtrack composer accompanied by a light show. Ziggo Dome 21 Jun 2017.

Toneelgroep Amsterdam – Amsterdam's renowned theatre company performs shows in Dutch which have live English surtitles above the stage - usually on Thursday evenings at the Stadsschouwburg theatre. As part of Holland Festival, Obsession is performed almost daily 8-18 Jun 2017.

Russell Howard – British stand-up comedian brings his live show to Oude Luxor Theater (Rotterdam) on 17 Jun 2017 and Meervaart Theater Amsterdam on 18/23 Jun 2017.

Amsterdam Improv Marathon – 12 consecutive hours of improvised comedy and theatre (in English) by local and international artists. Held at Kunst & Cultuurhuis Cinetol on 24 June 2017.

Boom Chicago – Comedy and improv show held Wed - Sat and playing at Rozentheater on Rozengracht.

Easylaughs – Almost every Friday, the international improvised comedy group based in Amsterdam puts on a show at the CREA cafe from 9pm.

3D Print Canal House – See a canal house being constructed using 3D printing techniques and sustainable materials. The location is Asterweg 49, 1031 HM Amsterdam - get the free ferry across to Amsterdam North and walk beyond EYE Film. Visit by appointment only or take the walk-in tour (€7.50) which runs every first Wednesday of the month at 1500.

Bimhuis – Jazz venue has free "Workshop + Session" on Tuesdays at 2000. Monday Match Dance & Impro Music Lab (Monday 12 Jun 2017 at 2000) - dancers and musicians create improvisational performances to a live audience.

Concertgebouw – Free lunchtime concert to be held on 7/14/21/28 Jun 2017 at 1230. Get there early to ensure admission.

De Hallen – Free monthly choir concert in the passageway of De Hallen, Sunday 4 Jun 2017 at 1600.

Opera in the Park Park Frankendael hosts a live screening of Salome (Richard Strauss) performed by the Dutch National Opera. On 21 Jun 2017 at 8pm, free entry.
