Rijksmuseum – Reopened in April 2013 after 10 years of renovation, the Rijksmuseum's rich collection (including Rembrandt's Night Watch) is a must-see in Amsterdam. KWAB: A monstrous style, exhibition featuring interior art of the auricular style (Dutch: Kwabstijl), runs 30 Jun to 16 Sep 2018. Chillida in the Rijksmuseum Gardens, feature 9 giant sculptures by the Spanish Basque artist Eduardo Chillida (1924-2002). Runs 22 Jun to 23 Sep 2018. This is the last month to see The Last Judgement, the 16th century masterpiece by Lucas van Leyden, at the Rijksmuseum’s Gallery of Honour. Ends 1 Sep 2018.
Van Gogh Museum – Popular museum with the world's largest collection of Vincent van Gogh paintings. Van Gogh Dreams is narrative installation that allows you to enter the mind and heart of Vincent van Gogh. Runs 27 Jul 2018 to 13 Jan 2019.
Beurs van Berlage – My Name Is Prince, official retrospective exhibition of the legendary pop superstar. It includes hundreds of items from the late singer's private estate in Minnesota. 8 Mar to 5 Aug 2018, extended run.
Anne Frank House – The canal house on Amsterdam's Prinsengracht canal where Anne Frank wrote her famous teenage wartime diary whilst hiding from German occupation. The house and museum is open to visitors though pre-booking is essential.
Hermitage Amsterdam – Showcases an exhibition every 6 months from the vast collection of the grand State Hermitage in St Petersburg, Russia. New exhibition Classic Beauties: Artists, Italy and the Aesthetic Ideals of the 18th Century featuring neo-classic art runs between 16 Jun 2018 and 13 Jan 2019. Also ongoing at the Hermitage: Panorama Amsterdam. City Time Lapse, a visual projection of Amsterdam through the ages as seen from the Amstel river; and Portrait Gallery of the Golden Age.
Outsider Art Museum – This museum at the Hermitage showcases extraordinary art by unconventional artists who have not been formally trained. ITE Art | Finnish collection Ammann, art from the backwoods of Finland. Runs 14 Jun 2018 to 13 Jan 2019.
Stedelijk – Amsterdam's main modern and contemporary art museum. STEDELIJK BASE is the permanent installation featuring around 700 pieces. Amsterdam, the Magic Center looks at art and counterculture movement in the city 1967-1970. Runs 7 Jul 2018 to 6 Jan 2019. Günther Förg, A Fragile Beauty is a major survey of work from the German artist. 26 May to 14 Oct 2018. Freedom is Recognized Necessity, exhibition of art from the former Soviet Republics and satellite states, runs 3 Mar to 12 Aug 2018.
Amsterdam Museum – 50 Years of Paradiso, exhibition about the iconic music venue in Amsterdam which has hosted many noted artists and bands. Runs 30 Mar to 19 Aug 2018.
Rembrandt House – Rembrandt Observes People, features 24 etchings by Rembrandt of daily life in the 17th century, from the Rembrandt House collection. The exhibition runs in 2 parts due to the light sensitive nature of the etchings which need to be switched over. Part one runs 3 Mar to 27 May 2018; part two runs 2 Jun to 2 Sep 2018.
MOCO Museum – This modern and contemporary art museum on Museumplein. Banksy: Laugh Now (includes Beanfield) is now a permanent exhibition. Icy & Sot, A Moment of Clarity exhibition runs 1 Jun 2018 to 15 Jan 2019.
National Maritime Museum – Dare to Discover is a virtual reality exhibition (ongoing) which takes visitors back to the Golden Age.
Tropenmuseum – Ethnographic museum featuring fascinating exhibitions on non-Western cultures. Body Art, an exhibition about body decorations from different cultures. Runs until 26 Aug 2018. Fashion Cities Africa explores the urban fashion scene in Casablanca, Johannesburg, Lagos, Nairobi as well as Africans in the Netherlands. Runs until 6 Jan 2019.
Allard Pierson Museum – The World in Colour: Colour Photography before 1918 exhibition runs 21 Jun 2018 to 6 Jan 2019.
Stadsarchief – Aids in Amsterdam 1981-1996, free photo exhibition in the central hall of the city archives. Runs 6 Jul to 2 Sep 2018. Amsterdam from the past, photo exhibition by Dolf Toussaint with street shots from the 1960s. Runs 13 Jul to 4 Nov 2018.
Huis Marseille – Chikako Watanabe / The Third House Owner, photos/installations of the Netherlands-based Japanese artist that focuses on associations with Huis Marseille. Runs 9 Jun to 2 Sep 2018.
FOAM – Y'all Better Quiet Down, photo exhibition by JeanPaul Paula and Florian Joahn about the LGBTQ community in São Paulo, Brazil. Runs 27 Jul to 12 Aug 2018. Les Invisibles by Samuel Gratacap documents migrant stories. Runs 15 Jun to 9 Sep 2018.
Van Loon Museum – Julien Spiewak: Corps de style, photographs of classical interiors runs 30 Jun to 24 Sep 2018.
Dutch Resistance Museum (Verzetsmuseum) – Risk of explosion!, an interactive exhibition about the Dutch resistance's attack on the Amsterdam Registry Office in 1943. Runs 28 Mar to 11 Nov 2018.
National Holocaust Museum – Opened in 2016, this museum is under development and currently presents Tangible Memories from the Jewish Monument, exhibition of objects, photos and documents of people affected by the Holocaust. Ongoing until end 2019. Art to Remember: Post-War Work from our Museum Collections, works by 27 artists featuring wartime persecution of the Jews. Runs 26 Mar to 2 Sep 2018.
Jewish Historical Museum – Maria Austria, Living for Photography, comprehensive exhibition about the famous Amsterdam-Jewish photographer Maria Austria (1915-1975). Runs 26 Jan to 2 Sep 2018. Jews and The House of Orange, exhibition examining the relationship between Jews and the Dutch monarchy. Runs 17 Apr to 30 Sep 2018.
Biblical Museum – Rebecca, That's Me, exhibition of works from the Jewish Museum in Berlin portraying biblical stories. Runs 6 Jul 2018 to 27 Jan 2019.
Oude Kerk – Giorgio Andreotta Aalò – Anastasis, the artist has placed red film and plexiglass in the church windows resulting in an ocean of red light inside the church. Runs 25 May to 23 Sep 2018.
EYE Film – Alex van Warmerdam, exhibition of works from the Dutch filmmaker, artist, designer, theatre director, actor and writer. Runs 10 Jun to 2 Sep 2018.
Museum of Bags and Purses – Made in Italy, exhibition of fashion and accessories created by leading Italian designers. Runs 20 May to 23 Sep 2018.
Wasteland – Exhibition from Dutch photojournalist Kadir van Lohuizen on how humans around the world deal with the problems of waste. Runs 20 Jun to 23 Sep 2018 in shipping containers outside A'DAM Toren.
ARCAM – ARCAM presents a talk (€7.50) on Amsterdam architecture and urbanism every Friday 1330-1415. There is an optional walking tour afterwards.
Body Worlds – Display of human body plastinate specimens at the permanent venue on Damrak. The exhibition focuses on happiness.

Festivals in Amsterdam
Uitmarkt – Largest cultural festival (300 performances across 25 stages) in the Netherlands taking place in central Amsterdam over a single weekend, marking the start of the new Dutch cultural season. Free entry, 24-26 Aug 2018 (41st edition). Location: Oosterdok and Marine-Terrein area of Amsterdam.
De Parade – A travelling theatre festival which visits Rotterdam, The Hague, Utrecht and Amsterdam. The Amsterdam event will take place over 2 weeks in the Rivierenbuurt district where theatre tents will be set up and dozens of performances take place. Plenty of activities for kids as well. Takes place 17 Aug - 2 Sep 2018 at Martin Luther King Park, Amsterdam.
Appelsap Fresh Music Festival – The annual "Apple Juice" festival features progressive electronic music plus hip-hop and R&B from international artists and DJs. 11 Aug 2018 at Flevopark in east Amsterdam.
Loveland Festival – Big DJ dance festival event with a local and international line-up in the western suburbs of Amsterdam. 11-12 Aug 2018 at Sloterpark, Amsterdam.
C.A.D. Festival – A one day Caribbean and Diaspora festival with food, music and stalls covering 27 Caribbean islands. 15 Aug 2018 at Anna Amstelveen Community Church, Amsterdam.
Mysteryland Festival – Large electronic music festival event with multiple stages held over an August weekend just outside Amsterdam. Features over 250 artists and 100,000 visitors. Includes a well-equipped camping site. To be held 24-26 Aug 2018 (25th edition) at the Floriade festival grounds, Haarlemmermeer (near Hoofddoprp).
Pluk de Nacht Festival – "Seize the night" open-air film festival (free entry) showing a variety of unreleased international films, animations and documentaries. Venue is Het Stenen Hoofd, with deckchair seating, 15-25 Aug 2018. Also held at Vrijhaven in Utrecht (1-5 Aug 2018).
Grachten Festival – Canal festival featuring classical and jazz music performances throughout Amsterdam, many on unique stages on the city's waterways. With 250 concerts in 90 venues, perhaps the highlight is the free Prinsengracht concert on 18 Aug 2018 at the pontoon of the Pulitzer Hotel. Dates are 10-19 Aug 2018 (21st edition), various locations around Amsterdam.
Vegan Food Festival – The first edition of a vegan food event featuring 30 stalls, workshops, music and more. At Westergasfabriek Amsterdam 10-12 Aug 2018.
West TAPT Festival – Beer festival (formerly BierWest festival) with food, games and live music at Rembrandt Park in Amsterdam, 21-22 Aug 2018.
Jordaan Festival – Dutch musical singers gather in the streets of the Jordaan neighbourhood. Location de Appeltjesmarkt, the 44th edition is due to be held 24-26 Aug 2018.

Pride Amsterdam 2018 – World famous gay cultural event over a week (28 Jul to 5 Aug 2018), the highlight being the spectacular canal parade around the Prinsengracht and river Amstel on 4 Aug 2018.
De Balie – The multimedia venue near Leidseplein in Amsterdam hosts regular events about current affairs, politics and culture.
City Beaches in Amsterdam
NEMO terrace – Chill on the roof of the NEMO Science Museum (at Oosterdok 2) with cool views of Amsterdam.
Ijburg Strand – Blijburg aan Zee can be reached by tram 26 (end of the line) – a real sandy beach on the Ij water.
Strand West – City beach pavilion located at Stavangerweg 900 in west Amsterdam near Houthavens (Westerpark).
Strand Zuid – City beach pavilion located at Europaplein 22 near Beatrixplein and RAI.
