Museums & Exhibitions in Amsterdam

Rijksmuseum – Reopened in April 2013 after 10 years of renovation, the Rijksmuseum's rich collection (including Rembrandt's Night Watch) is a must-see in Amsterdam. Adriaen van de Velde: Master of the Dutch Landscape is an exhibition of paintings and drawings of one of the Golden Age's greatest artists. Runs 24 June to 25 Sep 2016. Japan Modern: Elise Wessels Collection shows a series of 20th century Japanese prints, 24 June to 11 Sep 2016.

Van Gogh Museum On the Verge of Insanity. Van Gogh and his illness is an exhibition which sheds new light on the infamous artist's mental instability. Runs 15 July to 25 Sep 2016.

Hermitage Amsterdam – Exhibition Catherine The Great expected to run 18 June 2016 until 15 Jan 2017. Portrait Gallery of the Golden Age brings together for the first time 30 colossal 17th century group portraits from Amsterdam Museum and Rijksmuseum. Runs to the end of 2016.

StedelijkLiving in the Amsterdam School brings furniture and interior accessories from the Amsterdam School style to international attention. Runs 9 April to 28 Aug 2016. Avery Singer - Scenes, solo exhibition of the American artist with works from 2012, runs 23 April to 2 Oct 2016.

Beurs van BerlageThe Art of Banksy, sizeable collection (over 85 art pieces and installations) of the iconic British street artist will be on show in Amsterdam from 18 June to 30 Sep 2016.

MOCO Museum – This new modern and contemporary art museum on Museumplein opens with Banksy: Laugh Now (including the Beanfield work) running 9 April to 4 Sep 2016.

Tropenmuseum Rhythm & Roots - from blues to hip hop, a journey of musical styles which have roots in Africa. Runs until 13 May to 30 Oct 2016.

Rembrandt House Rembrandt, the Etcher – selection of some 50 etchings from the Rembrandt House collection. Runs 28 May to 18 Sep 2016.

Royal PalaceDynasty: Portraits of the House of Orange-Nassau,exhibition highlighting the long tradition of royal portaiture. Runs 2 July to 25 Sep 2016.

Nieuwe Kerk Journey in Time, History & Royalty exhibition runs 16 July to 4 Sep 2016.

Oude KerkOnce in a Lifetime, exhibition curated by Nina Folkersma where eight artists shed light on various aspects of life and mortality. Runs 12 May to 28 Aug 2016.

EYE FilmMaster of Light - Robby Müller, exhibition of this renowned Dutch cinematographer who opens up his personal archive of videos, photos and notes. Runs 4 June to 4 Sep 2016.

FOAMHelmut Newton - A Retrospective, major exhibition of one of the 20th century's most iconic photographers. Runs 17 June to 4 Sep 2016.

Huis Marseille Stephen Shore / Retrospective, exhibition of the pioneering American photographer covering the period 1960 to 2013. Runs 10 June to 4 Sep 2016.

Stadsarchief (City Archives)City Artists of Amsterdam, exhibition of 15 artists featuring new images of the city. Runs 27 May to 11 Sep 2016.

Dutch Resistance MuseumWorld War Two Today, exhibition by Dutch photographer Roger Cremers who travelled throughout Europe capturing images of tourists at war sites and commemorations. Runs 22 April to 25 Sep 2016.

National Holocaust Museum – The newly opened museum presents its first exhibition: The Demise of Abraham Reiss, a series of 9 harrowing paintings by noted Dutch actor and artist Jeroen Krabbé about the life and death of his grandfather. Runs 16 May to 2 Oct 2016.

Jewish Historical MuseumAmy Winehouse: A Family Portrait, intimate exhibition about the life of the singer and her Jewish-London roots. Runs 29 Feb to 4 Sep 2016. Early Soviet Photography and Film, exhibition running 24 July to 27 Nov 2016.

ARCAM – Architecture Centre Amsterdam presents an exhibition 100 Years of Inspiration, celebrating the centenary of the Amsterdam School of architecture and its influence on contemporary buildings. Runs 14 April to 30 Sep 2016, free entry.

Artis Royal ZooSummer Nights. Every Saturday in June, July and August, the zoo remains open until sunset with food, events and live music.

Lloyd HotelEmigrants at Lloyd Hotel, exhibition on 4th floor about migrants departing Amsterdam nearly 100 years ago. The Lloyd Hotel and surrounding shipping buildings facilitated East European emigrants as they departed to south America. Free entry, runs to end 2016.

Body Worlds – Display of human body plastinate specimens at the permanent venue on Damrak. The exhibition focuses on happiness.

Other Events in and around Amsterdam

Uitmarkt 2016 – Largest cultural festival (450 performances by 2,000 artists) in Netherlands taking place in central Amsterdam over a single weekend. It marks the start of the new cultural season. 3 main stages will be located at Museumplein, Leidseplein and Vondelpark. Free entry, 26-28 Aug 2016.

Kwaku Festival – Multi-cultural festival in Nelson Mandelapark in south-east Amsterdam featuring music, dance, sport and of course food/drink. Held during the weekends between 16 July and 7 August 2016.

Amsterdam Gay Pride – World famous gay cultural event over a week (23 July to 7 Aug 2016), the highlight being the spectacular canal parade around the Prinsengracht and river Amstel on 6 Aug 2016.

De Parade – Travelling theatre festival which visits Rotterdam, the Hague, Utrecht and Amsterdam. The Amsterdam event will take place over 2 weeks at Martin Luther King park (Rivierenbuurt) where theatre tents will be set up and dozens of performances take place. Plenty of activities for kids as well. Runs 12-28 Aug 2016.

Appelsap Fresh Music Festival – "Apple Juice" hip-hop and electro festival event to be held at Flevopark in east Amsterdam on Saturday 13 Aug 2016.

Loveland Festival – Big DJ dance festival event to be held at Sloterpark in the western suburbs of Amsterdam on 13 Aug 2016.

Mysteryland Festival – Large dance festival event at the Floriade festival grounds in Haarlemmermeer (near Hoofddoprp) on 27-28 Aug 2016.

Pluk de Nacht Festival – "Seize the night" open-air film festival (free entry) showing a variety of unreleased international films, animations and documentaries. Held at Het Stenen Hoofd, with deckchair seating, 3-13 August 2016.

Grachten Festival – "Canal festival" featuring classical and jazz music performances throughout Amsterdam including unique stages on the city's waterways. Runs 12-21 Aug 2016.

Jordaan Festival – Dutch musical singers gather in the streets of the Jordaan neighbourhood. Location de Appeltjesmarkt, 26-28 Aug 2016.

Amsterdam in-water Boat Show – Boating event held at the new Amsterdam Marina. 30 Aug to 4 Sep 2016.

Harbour Festival Ijmuiden – Free event in the port town of Ijmuiden, some 30 minutes from Amsterdam. Featuring street theatre, music concerts, film in a harbour setting. Note, no event will take place in 2016, due to return in August 2017.

Robeco SummerNights 2016 – Series of summer concerts (classical, pop and jazz) featuring international performers at the Concertgebouw. Expected end June 2016 to the end of August.

Koyaanisqatsi live – Philip Glass ensemble play live music to the 1982 cult film, at Heineken Music Hall on 19 Aug 2016.

Sky The Musical – A groundbreaking 3D musical held at Theater Amsterdam about the problems of a teenage girl. In Dutch but available with multilingual translation options. Tickets for limited dates Thu-Sat in August 2016.

Quiet/Stilte - Summer exhibition of drawings/photos/paintings by 3 Amsterdam-based artists (Sujata Majumdar, Tamar Rozenblat and Siobhan Wall) with the theme Quiet. Open Thursday-Saturday 12:00-18:00, runs 14 July to 14 August 2016 at Galerie de Witte Voet at Kerkstraat 135.

Boom Chicago – Comedy and improv show held almost daily – now playing at Rozentheater on Rozengracht.

North Sea Jazz Club – Hosts a wide variety of jazz, funk, soul and world music every weekend (Friday & Saturday) at the Westergasfabriek. Dinner concerts include a 3 course meal by the in-house chef.

Amsterdam International Art Fair – Note, the second edition will return in 2017 bringing together 150 exhibitors and 3,000 art works. To be held at Beurs van Berlage on 25-26 August 2017.

Free Concerts

Uitmarkt – Free concerts can be seen at the largest cultural festival in Netherlands over the weekend of 26-28 Aug 2016.

Vondelpark open air theatre – Free concerts at the open lucht theater running during the weekend (Friday evening, Saturday and Sunday) in summer.

Westerkerk – Free lunchtime organ concert every Friday at 13:00.

Market events in Amsterdam

Pure Markt – Regular market event with high quality produce, music, food stalls and other activities. Runs 11:00-18:00 at Amstel Park (14 Aug 2016) and Park Frankendael (28 Aug 2016).

Sunday Market - Monthly market event with a focus on fashion, art and design, plus good food and drink. Sunday 7 Aug 2016 from 12:00-18:00 at Westergasfabriek.

NeighbourFood Market – Another Sunday market event (from 11:00) featuring local food products. Westergasfabriek on Sunday 21 Aug 2016.

Museum Market – Museumplein hosts this Sunday market with arts and crafts, food and music on 21 Aug 2016.

IJ-Hallen – Huge weekend flea market event held at NDSM-wharf in north Amsterdam. 13-14 August 2016.

City Beaches

NEMO terrace – Chill on the roof of the NEMO Science Museum (at Oosterdok 2) with cool views of Amsterdam.

Ijburg Strand – Blijburg aan Zee can be reached by tram 26 (end of the line) – a real sandy beach on the IJ water.

Strand West – City beach pavilion located at Stavangerweg 900 in west Amsterdam near Houthavens (north of Westerpark). Take bus 22 to Spaarndammerstraat or bus 48 to Tasmanstraat.

Strand Zuid – City beach pavilion and terrace located at Europaplein 22 near Beatrixplein and RAI.

Alternatively head over to real beaches at Zandvoort or Bloemendaal – great to watch the sunset and have a meal on a summer evening.
