Museums & Exhibitions in Amsterdam

Rijksmuseum – Reopened in April 2013 after 10 years of renovation, the Rijksmuseum's rich collection (including Rembrandt's Night Watch) is a must-see in Amsterdam. The following 3 exhibitions run 17 Jun to 17 Sep 2017:  Small Wonders, exhibit of carved miniatures; New Realities. Photography in the Ninenteenth Century, major retrospective exhibition from the extensive Rijksmuseum collection; Sea Views, exhibition of contemporary seascape photos. Dubuffet in the Rijksmuseum Gardens, twelve monumental sculptures by the French artist Jean Dubuffet will be on display 1 Jul to 1 Oct 2017.

Van Gogh Museum In the Forest: Van Gogh, Rousseau, Corot is an exhibition of wood views and landscapes. Runs 7 Jul to 10 Sep 2017.

Hermitage Amsterdam – Exhibition 1917. From Romanov to Revolution is running 4 Feb until 17 Sep 2017. Also at the Hermitage: Outsider Art Museum includes world-class art works by Dutch and international outsider artists; and permanent exhibition Portrait Gallery of the Golden Age.

Amsterdam MuseumPuck & Hans, the first retrospective exhibition of the iconic Dutch fashion duo. Runs 9 Jun until 3 Sep 2017.

National Maritime MuseumThe World According to Blaeu, Joan Blaeu's large map of the world (1648) will be on view 14 Apr until 31 Dec 2017.

StedelijkChris Beekman, De Stijl Defector, exhibition of the politically active artist from the early 20th century. Runs 8 Apr to 17 Sep 2017. Jana Euler, High in Amsterdam, The Sky of Amsterdam exhibition of the contemporary German abstract artist inspired by the digital age. Runs 20 May to 15 Oct 2017. Edward Krasinski, first retrospective exhibition in the Netherlands of the avant-garde East European artist featuring sculptures and installations. Running 24 Jun - 15 Oct 2017.

MOCO Museum – This new modern and contemporary art museum on Museumplein. Banksy: Laugh Now (includes Beanfield) and Dalí: Genius have extended runs until 31 Oct 2017.

Tropenmuseum Rhythm & Roots - from blues to hip hop, a journey of musical styles which have roots in Africa. Runs until 7 Jan 2018. Aleppo, before and after exhibition about the war-torn Syrian city, running 20 Apr to 31 Dec 2017.

Rembrandt House Rembrandt and Jan Six. The Etching and the Friendship, exhibition about the bond between the 17th century artists. Runs 6 May to 3 Sep 2017.

Huis Marseille Andres Serrano, exhibition from the American photographer; Lionel Wendt, collection of prints from Ceylon (Sri Lanka), both run 10 Jun to 3 Sep 2017.

FOAMAdam Jeppesen - Out of Camp, exhibition of the Danish artist featuring a journey from North Pole to South Pole, runs 16 Jun to 27 Aug 2017. Gordon Parks - I Am You, major retrospective exhibition of the African-American photographer runs 16 Jun to 6 Sep 2017.

National Holocaust Museum – The newly opened museum presents Tangible Memories from the Jewish Monument, exhibition of objects, photos and documents of people affected by the Holocaust. Opened 2 Sep 2016, ongoing until end 2019. From Oblivion, photo exhibition from German-Jewish photographers Annemie and Helmuth Wolff who fled to Amsterdam in the 1930s. Runs 27 Mar to 3 Sep 2017.

Jewish Historical MuseumFrom Fauvism to Surrealism: Jewish Avant-Garde Artists from Hungary, runs 29 May to 24 Sep 2017. The Jewish Jukebox, a musical journey featuring 100 years of popular Jewish artists. Runs 30 Jun 2017 to 7 Jan 2018.

Nieuwe Kerk Journey in Time, History & Royalty exhibition runs 15 July to 27 Aug 2017.

Oude KerkSarah van Sonsbeeck, exhibition looking at the relationship between the old church and the sea. Runs 19 May to 17 Sep 2017.

EYE FilmMartin Scorsese – The Exhibition about the world renowned director will run 25 May to 3 Sep 2017.

ARTIS – Amsterdam's Royal Zoo presents Summer Nights each Saturday evening in June, July and August. Open until sunset, the evening includes workshops (edible gardens), performances and special guided tours.

ARCAM – ARCAM presents a crash course (€7.50) on Amsterdam architecture and urbanism every Friday 1330-1415.

Museum of Bags and PursesIt's a Men's World, a look at bags for men throughout history right up to the modern day. Runs 11 Mar to 27 Aug 2017.

Beurs van Berlage The Prints of Andy Warhol and other PopArtists, see prints from Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, Keith Haring and others, runs 2 Jul to 30 Sep 2017.

Body Worlds – Display of human body plastinate specimens at the permanent venue on Damrak. The exhibition focuses on happiness.

Harry Potter: The Exhibition – Experiential exhibition featuring dramatic dispalys from the world of Harry Potter. This international expo visits the Netherlands for an extended run until 2 Sep 2017. Location is Berlijnplein (next to Cinemec) in the city of Utrecht, near train station "Utrecht Leidsche Rijn".

Women's European Championship 2017 – The women's Euro 2017 tournament will be held in the Netherlands between 16 Jul and 6 Aug 2017. Games will be played in Breda, Deventer, Doetinchem, Enschede, Rotterdam, Tilburg and Utrecht.

Ajax Open Day – Amsterdam ArenA hosts an open day for Ajax fans to ring in the new season. Free entry, Friday 4 Aug 2017 (1200-1600).

European Hockey Championships – Amsterdam hosts the 8-nation EuroHockey tournament for both men and women. Held at Wagener Stadium in Amsterdamse Bos, 19-27 Aug 2017.

Friday Night Run – a free monthly 1 hour run organised by running group Phanos. Meet at Olympic Stadium Amsterdam at 1930 on Friday 11 Aug 2017.

Inline Skating:
Friday Night Skate – a 20km organised skate around the streets of Amsterdam held every Friday night (20:30, weather permitting) from Vondelpark Pavilion (former Film Museum).

Uitmarkt 2017 – Largest cultural festival (450 performances by 2,000 artists) in Netherlands taking place in central Amsterdam over a single weekend. It marks the start of the new cultural season. 3 main stages will be located at Museumplein, Leidseplein and Vondelpark. Free entry, 25-27 Aug 2017.

Amsterdam Magic Show – Monthly magic and comedy show with international performers to be held at the cabaret-style theatre Paleis van de Weemoed in Amsterdam, Tuesday 1 Aug 2017 at 8pm.

Artzuid – International art sculpture route in the south of Amsterdam from 19 May to 17 Sep 2017. The 2.5km route takes in Apollolaan, Minervalaan, Churchilllaan and the Zuidas business district.

Kwaku Festival – Multi-cultural festival in Nelson Mandelapark in south-east Amsterdam featuring music, dance, sport and of course food/drink. Held during the weekends between 15 Jul and 6 Aug 2017.

Pride Amsterdam 2017 – World famous gay cultural event over a week (29 Jul to 6 Aug 2017), the highlight being the spectacular canal parade around the Prinsengracht and river Amstel on 5 Aug 2017.

De Parade – Travelling theatre festival which visits Rotterdam, the Hague, Utrecht and Amsterdam. The Amsterdam event will take place over 2 weeks at Martin Luther King Park (Rivierenbuurt) where theatre tents will be set up and dozens of performances take place. Plenty of activities for kids as well. Runs 11-27 Aug 2017.

Appelsap Fresh Music Festival – "Apple Juice" hip-hop and electro festival event to be held at Flevopark in east Amsterdam on Saturday 12 Aug 2017.

Loveland Festival – Big DJ dance festival event to be held at Sloterpark in the western suburbs of Amsterdam on Saturday 12 Aug 2017.

Mysteryland Festival – Large electronic music festival event (24th year) at the Floriade festival grounds in Haarlemmermeer (near Hoofddoprp) on 26-27 Aug 2017.

Pluk de Nacht Festival – "Seize the night" open-air film festival (free entry) showing a variety of unreleased international films, animations and documentaries. Held at Het Stenen Hoofd, with deckchair seating, 16-26 Aug 2017.

Grachten Festival – "Canal festival" (20th edition) featuring classical and jazz music performances throughout Amsterdam including unique stages on the city's waterways. This year's theme is "in style". Festival runs 11-20 Aug 2017 with the free Prinsengracht concert on 19 Aug 2017.

Jordaan Festival – Dutch musical singers gather in the streets of the Jordaan neighbourhood. Location de Appeltjesmarkt, the 43rd edition is due to be held on 25-26 Aug 2017.

Amsterdam in-water Boat Show – Boating event held at the new Amsterdam Marina. 29 Aug to 3 Sep 2017.

Harbour Festival Ijmuiden – Free event in the port town of Ijmuiden, some 30 minutes from Amsterdam. Featuring street theatre, music concerts, film in a harbour setting on 25-27 Aug 2017.

Robeco SummerNights 2017 – Series of summer evening concerts (classical, pop and jazz) featuring international performers at the Concertgebouw. Runs 1 Jul to 31 Aug 2017.

Four Seasons Art Fair – Independent arts festival (inaugural edition) showcases works from up to 130 artists. 31 Aug-3 Sep 2017 at Loods 6 in Amsterdam.

Boom Chicago – Comedy and improv show held Wed - Sat and playing at Rozentheater on Rozengracht.

Amsterdam International Art Fair – The event's 2nd edition brings together some 150 exhibitors and 3,000 art works. Beurs van Berlage in Amsterdam on 25-26 Aug 2017.

3D Print Canal House – See a canal house being constructed using 3D printing techniques and sustainable materials. The location is Asterweg 49, 1031 HM Amsterdam - get the free ferry across to Amsterdam North and walk beyond EYE Film. Visit by appointment only or take the walk-in tour (€7.50) which runs every first Wednesday of the month at 1500.

Free Concerts

Uitmarkt – Free concerts can be seen at the largest cultural festival in Netherlands over the weekend of 25-27 Aug 2017.

Vondelpark open air theatre – Free concerts at the open lucht theater running during the weekend (Friday evening, Saturday and Sunday) in summer.

De Hallen – Free monthly choir concert in the passageway of De Hallen, Sunday 6 Aug 2017 at 1600.

Westerkerk – Free lunchtime organ concert every Friday at 1300.

Market events in Amsterdam

Pure Markt – Regular market event with high quality produce, music, food stalls and other activities. Runs 1100-1800 at Amstel Park (13 Aug 2017) and Park Frankendael (27 Aug 2017).

Sunday Market - Monthly market event with a focus on fashion, art and design, plus good food and drink. Sunday 6 Aug 2017 from 1200-1800 at Cultuurpark Westergasfabriek.

NeighbourFood & Flea Market – Sunday market event featuring local products. From 1100-1800 at Cultuurpark Westergasfabriek, Sunday 20 Aug 2017.

Museum Market – Museumplein hosts this Sunday market with arts and crafts, food and music on 20 Aug 2017 from 1200-1800.

IJ-Hallen – Huge weekend flea market event held at NDSM-wharf in north Amsterdam. 12-13 Aug 2017, 0900-1630.

City Beaches

NEMO terrace – Chill on the roof of the NEMO Science Museum (at Oosterdok 2) with cool views of Amsterdam.

Ijburg Strand – Blijburg aan Zee can be reached by tram 26 (end of the line) – a real sandy beach on the IJ water.

Strand West – City beach pavilion located at Stavangerweg 900 in west Amsterdam near Houthavens (north of Westerpark). Take bus 22 to Spaarndammerstraat or bus 48 to Tasmanstraat.

Strand Zuid – City beach pavilion and terrace located at Europaplein 22 near Beatrixplein and RAI.

Alternatively head over to real beaches at Zandvoort or Bloemendaal – great to watch the sunset and have a meal on a summer evening.
