Rijksmuseum – Reopened in April 2013 after 10 years of renovation, the Rijksmuseum's rich collection (including Rembrandt's Night Watch) is a must-see in Amsterdam. KWAB: A monstrous style, exhibition featuring interior art of the auricular style (Dutch: Kwabstijl), runs 30 Jun to 16 Sep 2018. Chillida in the Rijksmuseum Gardens, feature 9 giant sculptures by the Spanish Basque artist Eduardo Chillida (1924-2002). Runs 22 Jun to 23 Sep 2018.

Van Gogh Museum – Popular museum with the world's largest collection of Vincent van Gogh paintings. Van Gogh Dreams is narrative installation that allows you to enter the mind and heart of Vincent van Gogh. Runs 27 Jul 2018 to 13 Jan 2019.

Nieuwe Kerk (New Church)The life of Buddha, the Path to the Present is a major exhibition which recounts the life phases of Siddhartha Gautama, better known as the Buddha.Combining both ancient and modern art including pieces from Ai Weiwei and Yoko Ono. It runs 16 Sep 2018 to 3 Feb 2019.

Anne Frank House – The canal house on Amsterdam's Prinsengracht canal where Anne Frank wrote her famous teenage wartime diary whilst hiding from German occupation. The house and museum is open to visitors though pre-booking is essential.

Hermitage Amsterdam – Showcases an exhibition every 6 months from the vast collection of the grand State Hermitage in St Petersburg, Russia. New exhibition Classic Beauties: Artists, Italy and the Aesthetic Ideals of the 18th Century featuring neo-classic art runs between 16 Jun 2018 and 13 Jan 2019. Also ongoing at the Hermitage: Panorama Amsterdam. City Time Lapse, a visual projection of Amsterdam through the ages as seen from the Amstel river; and Portrait Gallery of the Golden Age.

Outsider Art Museum – This museum at the Hermitage showcases extraordinary art by unconventional artists who have not been formally trained. ITE Art | Finnish collection Ammann, art from the backwoods of Finland. Runs 14 Jun 2018 to 13 Jan 2019.

Stedelijk – Amsterdam's main modern and contemporary art museum. STEDELIJK BASE is the permanent installation featuring around 700 pieces. Amsterdam, the Magic Center looks at art and counterculture movement in the city 1967-1970. Runs 7 Jul 2018 to 6 Jan 2019. Günther Förg, A Fragile Beauty is a major survey of work from the German artist. 26 May to 14 Oct 2018.

Rembrandt HouseRembrandt Observes People, features 24 etchings by Rembrandt of daily life in the 17th century, from the Rembrandt House collection. The exhibition runs in 2 parts due to the light sensitive nature of the etchings which need to be switched over. Part one runs 3 Mar to 27 May 2018; part two runs 2 Jun to 2 Sep 2018. Rembrandt in Paris, exhibition showcases Rembrandt’s major influence on etching in nineteenth-century Paris - including Manet, Meryon, Degas. Runs 21 Sep 2018 to 6 Jan 2019.

MOCO Museum – This modern and contemporary art museum on Museumplein. Banksy: Laugh Now (includes Beanfield) is now a permanent exhibition. Icy & Sot, A Moment of Clarity exhibition runs 1 Jun 2018 to 15 Jan 2019.

Tropenmuseum – Ethnographic museum featuring fascinating exhibitions on non-Western cultures. Fashion Cities Africa explores the urban fashion scene in Casablanca, Johannesburg, Lagos, Nairobi as well as Africans in the Netherlands. Runs until 6 Jan 2019.

Allard Pierson MuseumThe World in Colour: Colour Photography before 1918 exhibition runs 21 Jun 2018 to 6 Jan 2019.

StadsarchiefAids in Amsterdam 1981-1996, free photo exhibition in the central hall of the city archives. Runs 6 Jul to 2 Sep 2018. Amsterdam from the past, photo exhibition by Dolf Toussaint with street shots from the 1960s. Runs 13 Jul to 4 Nov 2018.

Hortus Botanicus – Amsterdam's botanical gardens presents IGPOTY 2018 (International Garden Photographer of the Year), a garden, plant and flower photography exhibition. Runs 7 Sep to 31 Oct 2018.

Huis MarseilleChikako Watanabe / The Third House Owner, photos/installations of the Netherlands-based Japanese artist that focuses on associations with Huis Marseille. Runs 9 Jun to 2 Sep 2018. 4 exhibitions run 8 Sep to 2 Dec 2018 including Koos Breukel / Son, the Dutch portrait photographer presents photos of his son Casper since birth in 2000; Hellen van Meene / And everything goes on when you die, Dutch photographer looks at the grief and death in a world which keeps moving.

FOAMLes Invisibles photo exhibition by Samuel Gratacap documents migrant stories. Runs 15 Jun to 9 Sep 2018. Masahisa Fukase - Private Scenes, retrospective exhibition of the late Japanese photographer. Runs 7 Sep to 12 Dec 2018.

Van Loon MuseumJulien Spiewak: Corps de style, photographs of classical interiors runs 30 Jun to 24 Sep 2018.

Dutch Resistance Museum (Verzetsmuseum)Risk of explosion!, an interactive exhibition about the Dutch resistance's attack on the Amsterdam Registry Office in 1943. Runs 28 Mar to 11 Nov 2018.

National Holocaust Museum – Opened in 2016, this museum is under development and currently presents Tangible Memories from the Jewish Monument, exhibition of objects, photos and documents of people affected by the Holocaust. Ongoing until end 2019. Art to Remember: Post-War Work from our Museum Collections, works by 27 artists featuring wartime persecution of the Jews. Runs 26 Mar to 2 Sep 2018.

Jewish Historical MuseumMaria Austria, Living for Photography, comprehensive exhibition about the famous Amsterdam-Jewish photographer Maria Austria (1915-1975). Runs 26 Jan to 2 Sep 2018. Jews and The House of Orange, exhibition examining the relationship between Jews and the Dutch monarchy. Runs 17 Apr to 30 Sep 2018. The Institute of Ongoing Things, an exhibition by the multidisciplinary artist Uri Katzenstein. Runs 29 Sep 2018 to 24 Feb 2019.

Biblical MuseumRebecca, That's Me, exhibition of works from the Jewish Museum in Berlin portraying biblical stories. Runs 6 Jul 2018 to 27 Jan 2019.

Oude KerkGiorgio Andreotta Aalò – Anastasis, the artist has placed red film and plexiglass in the church windows resulting in an ocean of red light inside the church. Runs 25 May to 23 Sep 2018.

EYE FilmAlex van Warmerdam, exhibition of works from the Dutch filmmaker, artist, designer, theatre director, actor and writer. Runs 10 Jun to 2 Sep 2018. Ryoji Ikeda, key figure in electronic music and visual artist, curates a spectacular exhibition for Eye. Runs 15 Sep to 2 Dec 2018.

Museum of Bags and PursesMade in Italy, exhibition of fashion and accessories created by leading Italian designers. Runs 20 May to 23 Sep 2018.

Wasteland – Exhibition from Dutch photojournalist Kadir van Lohuizen on how humans around the world deal with the problems of waste. Runs 20 Jun to 23 Sep 2018 in shipping containers outside A'DAM Toren.

ARCAM – ARCAM presents a talk (€7.50) on Amsterdam architecture and urbanism every Friday 1330-1415. There is an optional walking tour afterwards.

Body Worlds – Display of human body plastinate specimens at the permanent venue on Damrak. The exhibition focuses on happiness.

Dam tot Dam Loop – Very popular fun-run event with 50,000 participants - the 34th edition takes place over the weekend of 22-23 Sep 2018. The main 10 mile event from Amsterdam to Zaandam is staged on Sunday 23 Sep 2018, with staggered starts at Prins Hendrikkade. There are also Dam to Dam Walk and Dam to Dam Cycle events.

Friday Night Run – a free monthly 1 hour run organised by running group Phanos. Meet at Olympic Stadium Amsterdam at 1930 on Friday 14 Sep 2018.

Amsterdam City Swim – Charity 2km outdoor swim event in the city featuring up to 3,000 participants. Sunday 9 Sep 2018.

Inline Skating:
Friday Night Skate – 20km organised skate around the streets of Amsterdam held every Friday night (2030, weather permitting) from Vondelpark Pavilion.

De Parade – A travelling theatre festival which visits Rotterdam, The Hague, Utrecht and Amsterdam. The Amsterdam event will take place over 2 weeks in the Rivierenbuurt district where theatre tents will be set up and dozens of performances take place. Plenty of activities for kids as well. Expected 17 Aug - 2 Sep 2018 at Martin Luther King Park, Amsterdam.

Amsterdam Fringe Festival – The Dutch Theatre Festival shows the best of last season's productions whilst the Fringe offers avant-garde theatre. 6-16 Sep 2018, multiple locations in Amsterdam.

Valtifest – DJs perform dance, house, electro and hip-hop on the waterfront at Amsterdam Noord. Expected 1 Sep 2018 (11th edition) at Thuishaven, Amsterdam.

Bimhuis – Jazz venue has free Workshop & Session every Tuesday at 2000.

Concertgebouw – Free lunchtime concerts held on occasional Wednesdays at 1230 in either the small hall (kleine zaal) or large hall (grote zaal). New season begins in Sep 2018, dates to be announced. For concerts in the small hall, free tickets must be collected from the ticket desk.

Dutch Opera & Ballet – These lunchtime concerts in the Opera & Ballet foyer present music by small groups of musicians, including members of the Chorus of Dutch National Opera, the Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra and Netherlands Chamber Orchestra. Almost every Tuesday 1230-1300, doors open 1215.

Muziekgebouw aan 't IJ – Free monthly concert showcasing young classical talent - Thursday 13 Sep 2018 (1230).

Westerkerk – Free lunchtime church organ concert every Friday at 1300.
