Museums & Exhibitions in Amsterdam

Rijksmuseum – Reopened in April 2013 after 10 years of renovation, the Rijksmuseum's rich collection (including Rembrandt's Night Watch) is a must-see in Amsterdam. KWAB: A monstrous style, exhibition featuring interior art of the auricular style (Dutch: Kwabstijl), expected 29 Jun to 16 Sep 2018.

Rijksmuseum Schiphol – Ten Dutch masterpiece paintings are on show on Holland Boulevard at Amsterdam Schiphol airport. Located in the newly refurbished zone between Lounges 2 and 3 (past security), the Rijksmuseum Schiphol is open 24 hours per day with free entry for passengers.

Van Gogh Museum – Popular museum with the world's largest collection of Vincent van Gogh paintings.

Anne Frank House - The canal house on Amsterdam's Prinsengracht canal where Anne Frank wrote her famous teenage wartime diary whilst hiding from German occupation. The house and museum is open to visitors though pre-booking is highly recommended.

Hermitage Amsterdam – Showcases an exhibition every 6 months from the vast collection of the grand State Hermitage in St Petersburg, Russia. New exhibition Classic Beauties featuring neo-classic art runs between 16 Jun 2018 and 13 Jan 2019. Also at the Hermitage is the permanent exhibition Portrait Gallery of the Golden Age.

Outsider Art Museum – This museum at the Hermitage showcases extraordinary art by unconventional artists who have not been formally trained.

Stedelijk – Amsterdam's main modern and contemporary art museum.

Tropenmuseum – Ethnographic museum featuring fascinating exhibitions on non-Western cultures.

National Holocaust Museum – Opened in 2016, this museum is under development and currently presents Tangible Memories from the Jewish Monument, exhibition of objects, photos and documents of people affected by the Holocaust. Ongoing until end 2019.

Jewish Historical Museum Maria Austria, Living for Photography, comprehensive exhibition about the famous Amsterdam-Jewish photographer Maria Austria (1915-1975). Runs 26 Jan to 2 Sep 2018.

ARCAM – ARCAM presents a crash course (€7.50) on Amsterdam architecture and urbanism every Friday 1330-1415.

Body Worlds – Display of human body plastinate specimens at the permanent venue on Damrak. The exhibition focuses on happiness.

Football:
Ajax home matches at the Johan Cruyff ArenA in Amsterdam - to be announced.

Golf:
KLM Open – European Tour event will be held at The Dutch links course in Spijk (Gorinchem) on 13-16 Sep 2018.

Athletics/Running:
Dam tot Dam Loop – Very popular fun-run event with tens of thousands of participants - the 34th edition takes place over the weekend of 22-23 Sep 2018. The main 10 mile event from Amsterdam to Zaandam is staged on Sunday 23 Sep 2018, with staggered starts at Prins Hendrikkade.

Friday Night Run – a free monthly 1 hour run organised by running group Phanos. Meet at Olympic Stadium Amsterdam at 1930 on Friday 14 Sep 2018.

Swimming:
Amsterdam City Swim – Charity 2km outdoor swim event in the city featuring up to 3,000 participants. Likely Sunday 2 Sep 2018, to be confirmed.

Inline Skating:
Friday Night Skate – 20km organised skate around the streets of Amsterdam held every Friday night (2030, weather permitting) from Vondelpark Pavilion.

Festivals in Amsterdam

De Parade – A travelling theatre festival which visits Rotterdam, The Hague, Utrecht and Amsterdam. The Amsterdam event will take place over 2 weeks in the Rivierenbuurt district where theatre tents will be set up and dozens of performances take place. Plenty of activities for kids as well. Expected 17 Aug - 2 Sep 2018 at Martin Luther King Park, Amsterdam.

Amsterdam Fringe Festival – The Dutch Theatre Festival shows the best of last season's productions whilst the Fringe offers avant-garde theatre. 6-16 Sep 2018, multiple locations in Amsterdam.

Valtifest – DJs perform dance, house, electro and hip-hop on the waterfront at Amsterdam Noord. Expected September 2018 (11th edition, unconfirmed) at NDSM-wharf, Amsterdam.

West Beach Film Festival – Open-air film festival at a spectacular waterside location screening a variety of feature films. Free entrance. Expected in September 2018 (15th edition, unconfirmed) at location Noordzijde 41, west Amsterdam (next to Sloterplasbad swimming pool).

Ambacht in Beeld Festival – Craft festival offering workshops, masterclasses and films covering a wide range of craft skills. At De Hallen in west Amsterdam, Sep 2018 dates to be confirmed.

NEU NOW – International arts festival (10th edition) which features emerging talent from Europe. Expected in Sep 2018 at Westergasfabriek in Amsterdam.

Camera Japan – Japanese cultural festival which features film, art, music plus Japanese food. Scheduled for Sep 2018 at Shofukan, Rotterdam.

Amsterdam Magic Show – Monthly magic and comedy show with international performers to be held at the cabaret-style theatre Paleis van de Weemoed in Amsterdam, Tuesday 4 Sep 2018 at 2000.

Boom Chicago – Comedy and improv show held Wed - Sat and playing at Rozentheater on Rozengracht.

HISWA Amsterdam in-water Boat Show – Large boating event featuring 250 new boats to be held at the Amsterdam Marina, 4-9 Sep 2018.

Toneelgroep Amsterdam – Amsterdam's renowned theatre company performs shows in Dutch which have live English surtitles above the stage - on occasional Thursday evenings at the Stadsschouwburg theatre. New 2018/19 season to be announced.

Dutch National Opera & Ballet – New 2018/19 season of ballet and opera performances to be announced.

Other Events in Amsterdam

De Balie – The multimedia venue near Leidseplein in Amsterdam hosts regular events about current affairs, politics and culture.

3D Print Canal House – See a canal house being constructed using 3D printing techniques and sustainable materials. The location is Asterweg 49, 1031 HM Amsterdam - get the free ferry across to Amsterdam North and walk beyond EYE Film. Visit by appointment only or take the walk-in tour (€7.50) which runs every first Wednesday of the month at 1500.

Free Concerts in Amsterdam

Bimhuis – Jazz venue has free Workshop & Session every Tuesday at 2000.

Concertgebouw – Free lunchtime concerts held on occasional Wednesdays at 1230 in either the small hall (kleine zaal) or large hall (grote zaal). New season begins in Sep 2018, dates to be announced. For concerts in the small hall, free tickets must be collected from the ticket desk.

De Hallen – Free monthly choir concert in the passageway of De Hallen, date to be announced.

Dutch Opera & Ballet – New season of free lunchtime concert in the foyer every Tuesday at 1230. Performed by members of Opera Studio, the Netherlands Opera or Dutch Philharmonic orchestra. Dates to be announced.

Muziekgebouw aan 't IJ – Free monthly concert showcasing young classical talent - date to be announced.

Westerkerk – Free lunchtime church organ concert every Friday at 1300.

Market Events in Amsterdam

Pure Markt – Regular market event with high quality produce, music, food stalls and other activities. At Amstelpark 9 Sep 2018 (1100-1800) and Park Frankendael 30 Sep 2018 (1100-1800).

Sunday Market – Sunday market at Westergasfabriek with a mix of fashion, design, arts, food and kids stuff. 2 Sep 2018 (1200-1800).

Museum Market – Museumplein hosts this Sunday market with arts and crafts, food and music. 16 Sep 2018 (1200-1800).

IJ-Hallen – Huge weekend flea market event held at NDSM-wharf in north Amsterdam. Dates to be announced.
