A number of visitors coming to Amsterdam choose to arrive at Eindhoven airport (EIN), taking advantage of cheaper flights from no-frills airlines such as Ryanair, Transavia and Wizzair.

NOTE: Eindhoven airport will be closed for nearly 6 months between 1 Feb and 19 Jul 2027 for renovation of the runway.

In this article we provide a detailed guide to transport from Eindhoven airport to Amsterdam.

Eindhoven Airport to Amsterdam summary (2026 prices)

1. LOCAL BUS+INTERCITY TRAIN: Local 400/401 bus to Eindhoven Central railway station then Intercity train to Amsterdam Central (singles: €5.15 bus + €25.60 train, total €30.75, run regularly all day).

2. TAXI: Eindhoven airport taxi rates to Eindhoven Central station €30-€45; to Amsterdam from around €150 (fixed rate) or higher for meter fares. Let’s take a look at these Eindhoven Airport to Amsterdam travel options in more detail with some tips and advice for visitors…

1. Local Airport Bus 400/401 to Eindhoven Station + NS Intercity Train to Amsterdam (or elsewhere)

You can take the regular local bus from Eindhoven airport to Eindhoven Central station and then an Intercity train to Amsterdam Central.

Local bus: From Eindhoven airport you take bus 400 or 401 (operated by Bravo Direct) both of which go to the bus terminus at Eindhoven Central NS railway station.

There is a small bus station under the car park just a short walk from the arrivals terminal. An electronic board at the bus stop will tell you the time of the next departure.

The journey time from the airport to Eindhoven Central station is just over 25 minutes.

The buses run every day until 00:30 – on weekdays the service starts at around 06:00, on Saturdays 07:30 and Sundays 08:30. The service frequency varies through the day running up to 10x an hour at peak times to 2x an hour in the late evenings.

The buses serve slightly different routes – airport shuttle bus 400 takes a longer route but only stops twice at BIC Eindhoven and ‘Woensel XL’ shopping mall; bus 401 stops at every point along the way. Journey times are the same for either bus.

On board there is some space for luggage marked under the seats and near some doorways.

The standard single fare on the bus between Eindhoven airport and Eindhoven Central station costs €5.15. You can buy this from the driver or from the vending machines at the bus station. Payments are accepted with card only (cash not accepted).

You could also pay the standard distance fare using an OV-chipkaart with travel credit; or with a contactless debit/credit card/mobile using the OVpay system.

You do this by checking-in and -out by touching your card against the reader on the bus. This works out slightly cheaper than the single ticket – costing approximately €3.00-€3.50 depending on route taken.

Children 0-3 always travel free in the Netherlands. Each valid ticket holder on the Bravo local bus can take up to 2 children 4-11 for free.

In addition children 4-11 can purchase a Railrunner ticket for €2.50 for 1 day’s travel on the Dutch rail network.

A child aged 4-11 would therefore pay a bargain €2.50 to get from Eindhoven airport to Amsterdam.

Intercity train: At the bus terminus walk straight into the adjacent Eindhoven Central NS station. You need to scan your ticket at the gate barriers to head into the platform tunnel.

If requiring a train ticket, the standard fare from Eindhoven Central to Amsterdam Central costs €25.60 (2nd class) or €46.08 (1st class) – plus €1.60 surcharge if buying a disposable ticket.

The service desk accept payment by cash (euro banknotes or coins) and debit/credit cards (V-Pay, Maestro, Mastercard, Visa and American Express) using pin and/or contactless. Ticket machines accepts debit/credit cards as mentioned and also euro coins (change given) via the coin slot – they do NOT accept euro banknotes.

Once checked-in through the gate barriers you can go up to the platforms and take the Intercity train to Amsterdam Central (direction Alkmaar or Enkhuizen) – these normally depart from platforms 4, 5 or 6.

The service runs up to 4x hourly and the trip takes about 1 hour and 19 minutes. The train stops at Den Bosch, Utrecht and Amsterdam Amstel before arriving at Amsterdam Central station.

The first service departs around 05:30 (weekdays), 07:00 (Sat) and 07:30 (Sun). The last train leaves Eindhoven at around 23:30 although there is a (slower) night train running from Arrriva on Friday and Saturday nights. Printed yellow timetable boards can be found at the station or check the ns.nl website.

Be aware that the NS double decker Intercity trains on the route are not very convenient if you are carrying large suitcases – to reach the carriage you have to navigate stairs and the overhead racks are either tiny or non existent!

However you can find some storage space on the floor under the seats. Alternatively, just stay in the compartment near the doors – but don’t leave your luggage unattended.

For travel from Eindhoven to Amsterdam Schiphol airport there is a separate half-hourly direct service available during the day. It stops at Den Bosch, Utrecht, Amsterdam Bijlmer ArenA and Amsterdam Zuid – it does not go to Amsterdam Central.

One thing to watch out for is that engineering maintenance work at weekends can occasionally close part of the Eindhoven-Den Bosch-Utrecht-Amsterdam rail line.

This means replacement bus services running between the affected stations – if you are carrying luggage this can be quite a hassle, as well as delaying your journey by 30 to 60 minutes.

If you would like to make a stopover at Eindhoven then there are baggage lockers at the station – open 05:00-01:30 (Mon-Sat), 06:15-01:30 (Sun). Eindhoven city centre is a short walk away from the station. There are various café options at the station.

Amsterdam to Eindhoven return trip by train+bus: Just do everything above in reverse. The first train leaving Amsterdam to Eindhoven is at around 06:00 (weekdays), 07:00 (Sat) and 08:00 (Sun) though an Arriva night train runs on Fridays and Saturdays.

Then take the 400/401 bus back to the airport. You can buy a combined ticket at Amsterdam Central station.

2. Taxis from Eindhoven Airport

This is the most private and comfortable way to travel to/from Eindhoven airport. You can find the official taxi rank just outside the terminal.

The trip to the centre of Eindhoven will take around 15-20 minutes. Expect to pay €30-€45 for the fare (1-4 people) or €40-€60 for a van (5-8 people).

A taxi from Eindhoven airport to Amsterdam will generally cost €150-€225.

Eindhoven airport facilities

Eindhoven airport is the 2nd busiest airport in the Netherlands after Amsterdam Schiphol. Part of the airport is currently under renovation with a new terminal section being constructed.

The modern single terminal has 2 levels – the upper level has a La Place café and a panorama terrace overlooking the apron and runway.

The lower level has airline desks and baggage drop-off, departures and arrivals plus a few shops including an AH To Go mini-supermarket, Aviflora flower shop, GWK Travelex money shop, Relay newsagents and Starbucks café.

The Privium ExpressLounge is available to Privium members and paying passengers. It is located after security on the first floor opposite gates 11 and 12. Opening hours are 05:30-21:00.

Airlines serving Eindhoven: Ryanair flies from Eindhoven airport to a wide variety of destinations around Europe. WizzAir has flights to EIN from various airports in Poland and Eastern Europe. Dutch airline Transavia serves a number of Mediterranean destinations. A few other airlines run flights to Turkey.

Amsterdam Schiphol (AMS) is a major international airport which lies 17km south-west of central Amsterdam. It offers excellent transport connections including a railway station directly under the airport.

For many passengers the train is the cheapest and most convenient way of getting to Amsterdam city centre.

Schiphol Airport to Amsterdam summary (2026 prices)

1. TRAIN: NS (Dutch Railways) train from Schiphol Airport to Amsterdam Central (singles from €5.50-€12.00, 16-17 mins).

– this is a convenient option for arriving travellers – no ticket queues, walk straight onto the train (no scanning required at Schiphol). You only need to scan the barcode at the exit gates at Amsterdam Centraal.

2. TRAIN+METRO: NS train from Schiphol to Amsterdam Zuid (singles from €3.70, 7 mins) where you can connect onto the metro (another ticket required, single €3.40).

3. BUS: Amsterdam Airport Express Bus 397 (Connexxion-RNET) from Schiphol Plaza to Amsterdam Elandsgracht (single €6.50, open return €11.75, 30 mins). Also, GVB bus 369 Schiphol to Amsterdam Sloterdijk (single €3.40, 40 mins). Note neither bus goes to Amsterdam Central.

These multi-day transport tickets are useful for visitors and are valid on all airport trains and buses to central Amsterdam. These can be good value if you also need transport in and around Amsterdam:

Holland Travel Ticket: 1 day ticket (€79/€54 off-peak) valid on all Dutch public transport. Only good for longer journeys around the Netherlands and/or if using multiple transport companies.

TAXI: Standard metered fare will be €55-€95 to central Amsterdam; fixed fare discounts offered by some companies. If you have large cases and don’t want to navigate busy public transport then a taxi direct to/from your accommodation is a very comfortable option.

Schiphol Airport to Amsterdam – Transport & ticket options

1. Schiphol Airport to Amsterdam by NS train

All Schiphol passenger arrival points (exits 1-4) are a short walk to the main station hall. Dutch Railways (NS) runs Sprinter trains to Amsterdam Central station up to 8 times per hour between 05:30 and 01:00.

There are also Intercity night trains running once an hour between 02:00 and 05:00.

There are 6 underground platforms at Schiphol with Sprinter trains to Amsterdam normally departing from platform 3. You can go down to the platforms by escalator or stairs from the station hall.

How much is a train ticket for Schiphol-Amsterdam Central?

The standard one-way fare (2026) is €5.50 in 2nd class or €9.90 in 1st class.

If you buy a disposable paper ticket there is a €1.60 surcharge on top – therefore a total of €7.10 (2nd class) or €11.50 in 1st class.

‘Railrunner’ tickets for children aged 4-11 cost €2.50 and are valid the whole day in 2nd class on the rail network. Children 0-3 travel free.

You can buy e-tickets in advance which allows you to walk straight onto the train (no check-in/scanning required at Schiphol). Just scan the ticket when exiting at the gate barriers at Amsterdam Centraal.

Other ticket alternatives for airport train travel:

Use OVPay – check-in and -out with your debit card or other contactless payment and you will be charged the standard fare.

Use an OV-chipkaart or the new OV-Pas to check-in and -out to travel at the standard fares. As both cards cost a one-time fee to buy, visitors are better off using OVPay or buy one of the better value multi-day tickets:

Buying train tickets at Schiphol Airport: You can buy disposable train tickets at either the ‘Train tickets & Services’ desk or at the yellow/blue automatic ticket machines.

The ticket machines can be found dotted around the station hall – plus a couple in the luggage reclaim area as well. The touch screen display is available in both Dutch and English.

The front page of the machines has a quick one-press option for tickets to Amsterdam Central – you do need to specify the date of your journey.

The ticket machines accept payment by debit and credit cards (V-Pay, Maestro, Mastercard, Visa and American Express) using pin and/or contactless. The machines also accept euro coins (change given) but euro banknotes are NOT accepted.

The ticket desk does accept euro cash payment by notes/coins and also accepts debit and credit cards as described above.

Which train? Train departure information can be found on the large screen above the ticket desk and on smaller triple screens around the station hall and platforms. For timetables check the ns.nl website – free WiFi is available at Schiphol – or the printed yellow boards.

If going to Amsterdam Central station (Amsterdam Centraal) make sure you get on the correct train! If in doubt you can also ask at the train info desk in the main hall.

Trains going to Amsterdam Zuid (see below), Amsterdam RAI or Amsterdam Bijlmer-ArenA use a different route and DO NOT go to Central station. The trains to Centraal are clearly marked on the screens and boards.

If you have taken the wrong train then get out at Amsterdam Bijlmer-ArenA or Duivendrecht where a Sprinter train can take you back up to Amsterdam Centraal.

With a valid ticket, you can get on any domestic train between Schiphol and Amsterdam Central. Sprinter trains generally make stops at Amsterdam Lelylaan and Amsterdam Sloterdijk stations before reaching Amsterdam Central in 16-17 minutes.

On the journey to/from the airport please watch your belongings as opportunist thieves and pickpockets are known to occasionally operate along the route.

At Amsterdam Centraal station the airport trains mainly arrive and depart from platforms 10, 13, 14 and 15 at the northern waterfront side (IJ-side) of the station. From the platform go down the stairs or escalators and check-out with your ticket or OV-chip card at the gate barriers.

Taxis and ferries are found on the waterfront side; head towards the opposite southern exit for the city centre, trams and metro.

2. Train to Amsterdam Zuid then North-South Metro Line

An alternative route to the city is to take the train from Schiphol Airport to Amsterdam Zuid (2nd class €3.70, 1st class €6.66, plus the €1.60 disposable ticket fee) and then connect onto the North-South metro line M52. The train trip takes just 7 minutes to Zuid with up to 12x hourly services.

At Amsterdam Zuid you can get onto the North-South metro (extra ticket required) which runs towards Amsterdam North through the central spine of the city.

Stops can be made at Europaplein (RAI), De Pijp, Vijzelgracht, Rokin (Dam Square/Spui), Amsterdam Central and onto Amsterdam North. See our Amsterdam Metro Map

The best way to do this trip is booking the Amsterdam Travel Ticket (see below for more info) which covers both the train and metro journeys on a single ticket. Otherwise you will have to buy separate rail and metro tickets.

In terms of metro tickets, there is the a GVB 1 hour ticket (€3.40) or the better value GVB multi-day tickets.

GVB multi-day tickets are valid on a full 24 hour basis ranging from 1 day (€10) to 7 days (€43); children’s 1 day ticket (€5). Book GVB multi-day tickets online here for download to a mobile.

Hopefully the metro will be extended to the airport in the coming years meaning passengers can use GVB tickets without having to buy a separate rail ticket.

3. Amsterdam Airport Express Bus 397

The Amsterdam Airport Express 397 bus service (operated by Connexion/R-NET) runs from bus stop B17 at Schiphol Plaza, just outside the main station hall.

These electric red buses depart 4-8x hourly to Amsterdam city centre – with various stops including Olympic Stadium, Museumplein and Leidseplein – finally terminating at Amsterdam Elandsgracht bus station.

This bus option is convenient for visitors staying around the Museum quarter or Leidseplein.

Please note, the bus does not go to Amsterdam Central station during the day.

The journey takes just over 30 minutes and buses operate from 05:00 to 00:30. Screens at the airport bus stop will show the next departure.

A single ticket costs €6.50, an open return within 14 days costs €11.75. You can buy a single/return ticket online here:

A children’s ticket (aged 4-11) is just €1 (only available from the driver, card-only payments); children 0-3 go free.

Main tickets can also be purchased at the Public Transport Service & Tickets minibus tucked away near the hotel shuttle bus stops A5-A7 – however the bus is not always open.

The Amsterdam Travel Ticket and Amsterdam & Region Ticket are also both valid for the 397 bus. However, GVB tickets are NOT valid for the 397 service.

There is a small space for luggage on board the bus.

Night bus service N97 Niteliner runs hourly during the night (01:00 to 05:00) between Schiphol Plaza and Amsterdam Central Station. Ticket prices are as above.

Alternative GVB airport bus to Sloterdijk:

GVB is the main transport company for Amsterdam including trams, metro and buses. Unfortunately GVB only has 1 service connecting to Schiphol – GVB bus 369 (R-NET-branded) Schiphol Plaza to Amsterdam Sloterdijk station which runs 2-4x per hour.

This bus does not go to Amsterdam Central station. This journey takes 40 minutes compared to 11 minutes with the train. The bus departs from stop B21 round the corner.

Cheapskate’s tip: The cheapest way to get from Schiphol to Amsterdam is to buy a 1 hour GVB ticket (€3.40) and take GVB bus 369 to Sloterdijk then immediately connect onto GVB bus 22 to Amsterdam Central; or tram 12 to the Museumplein area.

Bus 369 could also be of use to those with a GVB multi-day tickets. However we still recommend taking the much faster train!

4. Amsterdam Travel Ticket

This 1, 2 or 3 day ticket combines the airport train or bus journey with an unlimited GVB travel around Amsterdam. If you are on a short visit and also plan to use public transport in Amsterdam this ticket could be useful. You can purchase the Amsterdam Travel Ticket here.

It offers unlimited travel for NS train journeys between Schiphol Airport and any station in Amsterdam (Central, Amstel, Bijlmer-ArenA, Duivendrecht, Holendrecht, Lelylaan, Muiderpoort, RAI, Sciencepark, Sloterdijk or Zuid). This also includes any train journeys between the mentioned Amsterdam stations.

You also get unlimited travel on the Amsterdam Airport Express bus 397 and unlimited GVB transport travel which can be used on all GVB trams, buses, metro and night buses in the Amsterdam metropolitan area.

Ticket costs are €20 (1 day), €27 (2 days) and €34 (3 days).

Note that validity of the card is on a ‘day’ basis, not ’24 hours’ and cards expire at 04:00 the following morning of the last valid day. You must make the return journey back to the airport before expiry!

This means the card is best suited to those who activate it earlier in the day and who will return to the airport during the late afternoon/evening.

For example, if you activate the 1 day card anytime on a Wednesday (00:00-23:59) the card will expire on Thursday morning at 04:00. Likewise, a 2/3 day card activated on a Wednesday would expire on Friday/Saturday at 04:00, respectively.

So those activating in the morning could make good use of the card; those activating in the evening would get limited hours so it’s frankly not worth it in that case – buy separate train and transport tickets instead. For more see our detailed article on public transport tickets in Amsterdam

The Amsterdam Travel Ticket works using the OV-chip system so you must check-in and check-out for every journey taken.

You can buy the Amsterdam Travel Ticket online here. Paying in advance is really convenient and whether you are travelling alone or in a large group, you can purchase anything from 1 to 99 tickets in one transaction. Most payment methods are accepted.

You receive a voucher and simply pick up your pre-purchased tickets at the following points: NS ticket & service desks at at Amsterdam Schiphol airport, Amsterdam Central Station or Amsterdam Sloterdijk; at the GVB service points at Amsterdam Zuid, Amsterdam Bijlmer-Arena or Amsterdam Noord.

You can also purchase this ticket at the following points at Schiphol: NS Tickets & Service desk, Public Transport Service & Tickets minibus (stops A5-A7, note: sometimes closed), AKO newsagents.

You can also buy this ticket at NS Tickets & Service (Amsterdam Central) and GVB Tickets & Info points.

This ticket could be useful for those staying at Schiphol airport hotels wanting to visit the city each day. It could also be handy if you are staying at Amsterdam Sloterdijk or Amsterdam Bijlmer-Arena.

If staying longer than 3 days you could always consider buying 2 sets of tickets and using them consecutively.

5. Amsterdam & Region Travel Ticket

This is a (multi)day ticket which is valid on all public transport in the greater Amsterdam region. This includes NS trains, all regional buses (Connexxion, EBS, Transdev and KeukenhofBuzz 858 Schiphol-Keukenhof service) and all GVB Amsterdam buses, metro and trams. It is valid for the airport train trip and the 397 bus.

Ticket costs are €23 (1 day), €34 (2 days) and €44 (3 days).

As with the Amsterdam Travel Ticket, it is valid on a “calendar day basis” only rather than 24 hours. The card is activated on first check-in and expires at 04:00 in the morning after the last valid day. You must check-in and check-out for each journey taken.

Once again, you could consider buying more than 1 ticket if you are staying longer than 3 days/2 nights – or mix and match with the Amsterdam Travel Ticket or GVB multi-day tickets, depending on your itinerary.

This ticket is good if you are planning to take side trips outside of Amsterdam. The ticket region includes the Waterland fishing villages area, Zaanse Schans/Industrial Heritage area, Amsterdam beaches, Keukenhof flowers area, Castles/Garden area and the New Land area.

You receive a voucher and simply pick up your pre-purchased tickets at the following points: NS ticket & service desks at at Amsterdam Schiphol airport, Amsterdam Central Station or Amsterdam Sloterdijk; at the GVB service points at Amsterdam Zuid, Amsterdam Bijlmer-Arena or Amsterdam Noord.

The ticket is available at Connexxion, EBS, GVB and NS ticket offices. It can also be purchased at the “Public Transport tickets” machine near the escalator to platform 1/2 and 5/6 or the ‘Public Transport Service & Tickets’ minibus (stops A5-A7, note: sometimes closed).

6. Holland Travel Ticket

This ticket was introduced to make it easier for visitors to navigate the Netherlands on one single ticket. It is valid for 1 day on all Dutch public transport in the country including trains (2nd class), buses, trams and metro.

It can be bought at the desk or ticket machines at the train station and is a disposable OV-chip card. You must check-in and check-out for each journey leg.

The standard Holland Travel Ticket costs €79 and can be used anytime during the day. The off-peak Holland Travel Ticket costs €54 and is not valid for travel during the 06:30-09:00 rush hour Mon-Fri – but can be used anytime at weekends.

If you plan to do a lot of travelling in the Netherlands on a single day (either in terms of distance or using different forms of transport) then this ticket could offer good value and saves you having to buy separate tickets each time. Don’t buy it if you just need to go to Amsterdam from Schiphol!

7. Taxi Schiphol-Amsterdam

Private taxi cabs in the Netherlands are not particularly cheap – the trip to the centre of Amsterdam will cost around €55 to €95.

That said, the cars are usually very comfortable (Mercedes sedan or similar) so this may be a good choice for business travellers, older visitors, small groups and/or those with large cases.

The official taxi stand at Amsterdam Schiphol is located just outside the main station hall slightly to the left – stand A1. It is open 24 hours a day.

You can choose whichever taxi you want – you are not obliged to take the first car. The fare is calculated by meter and the journey should take between 25 and 45 minutes, depending on traffic.

Please be aware that illegal taxi touts are known to operate around the Schiphol Plaza area, often holding official-looking taxi signs and calling out “taxi”. Stick with the official taxi stand or use a pre-booked vehicle.

There are a number of private firms which can offer fixed rates to travel to/from Amsterdam Schiphol. The largest taxi firm in Amsterdam is TCA taxi (+31(0)20 7777777).

Some taxi firms use the Schiphol Transfer Assistance (STA) desk located at Arrivals 4. If you have already pre-booked you simply register your arrival at the desk and wait in the lounge for your driver to collect you.

8. Uber and Bolt at Amsterdam Schiphol

Uber, the ride-hailing service app (uber.com) is available in Amsterdam in the form of UberBlack (original service with VIP taxis), UberVan (minivan) and UberX (lower cost version). Users can order a car through the mobile app and payment is automatically handled.

Bolt is another ride-hailing company which has a presence in Amsterdam.

Expect charges of around €40 to €65 for rides into the city.

At Schiphol Airport, you can pick-up ride-hailing cars at the “App pick-up point” at stops E1-E6.

There are also a couple of alternative baggage storage places a short walk away from the station.

Amsterdam Central Station Left Luggage

Amsterdam Central station has automated left luggage lockers located in a small 2 level building on the western edge of the station (city-side) – near the entrance to the Cuyperspassage foot/cycle tunnel.

This external facility opened in 2025 (the previous location inside the station has closed).

There are 3 sizes of lockers available – small lockers (90cm deep x 45cm high x 40cm wide) which should suffice for standard size luggage and large lockers (90cm x 60cm x 40cm) suitable for bigger suitcases. There are XL lockers for outsize items.

Lockers are generally available for rent for up to 3 days.

The costs for a 24 hour rental are €11 for a small locker, €16 for a large locker and €26 for a XL locker.

For the 2nd and 3rd day you will then pay a daily rate of €16 (small), €22 (large) and €36 (XL).

After the 3 days you will pay the penalty day rate of €21 (small), €32 (large) and €46 (XL). Your luggage may be removed from the locker after 3 days and you will pay a €100 rate to get it shipped to your home.

How to Rent a Locker at Amsterdam Central

• Find an empty locker with a green light, place your things inside and shut the door, pressing it for 5 seconds – the locker beeps and an indicator light turns red. Memorise the locker number/colour (or take a photo).
• Go to one of the automatic pay terminals found between the lockers and check the locker number on the screen is yours. You pay for the first 24 hours – the machines accept debit/credit cards (V-Pay, Maestro, Visa or Mastercard) but note – they do not take cash.
• You should get a ticket with barcode receipt with your locker number. Double check that your locker is locked. Take a photo of the QR code as a back-up.
• Don’t lose the ticket as you need it to access your locker when you come back. There is a €15 charge if you lose it.
• When you come back to collect your luggage scan your ticket at the machine and it will check if any extra charge is required. On payment (or if within 24 hours) the locker opens automatically – and your locker rental is over.

Tip: When closing the locker make sure you have everything you need with you as once it’s locked that’s it. Your rental expires once you open the locker door!

Also, if you need multiple day storage then it is cheaper to come back each time and pay for separate 24 hour periods.

Opening hours: 24 hours daily

Remember that many hotels will store your bags for you after check-out if you are departing later in the day.

There is one located near Amsterdam Central station at the Q-Park underground parking garage at Prins Hendrikkade 20A, 1012 TL Amsterdam.

For a 24 hour period it charges €7 for a medium locker (30cm x 35cm x 60cm), €9 for a large locker (50cm x 33.5cm x 78cm) and €11 for a XL locker (86cm x 35cm x 60cm).

The location is accessible for 24 hours each day (although a QR code from its website is required to enter the area).

It is possible to pay by debit/credit cards including Visa, Mastercard, American Express and Apple Pay. Cash is not accepted. Telephone: +31(0)20 2218920.

Lockerpoint also has locations at Nieuwezijds Kolk, Marie Heinekenplein, Museumplein, RAI, Vijzelstraat, Zuid-WTC, Sloterdijk and ArenAPoort.

Let’s take a closer look at the NS trains in use on Dutch domestic rail services.

To start, here is a visual overview of the different types of trains you could encounter. We will then describe each in more detail with photos of trains and seating.

NS Intercity vs Sprinter services

Firstly we should distinguish the difference between the Intercity and Sprinter services in the Netherlands.

• Intercity trains are fast domestic train services which make limited stops between the major centres. If you are travelling from one city to another these are nearly always the best and quickest option.
• Sprinter Services are slower stopping train services which generally make stops at all stations between cities. They are designed for shorter trips and the average passenger journey time made is around 17 minutes.

Booking Dutch Train Tickets

You can check timetables, prices and make online bookings for Dutch domestic train services at the official NS (Dutch Railways) site here. Prices are in euros (EUR) only and payment is accepted by iDeal or credit cards (Visa/Mastercard/American Express). There are no booking fees, however tickets are non-refundable.

Train tickets in the Netherlands can also be booked at the Trainline site. It offers a wide range of payment options in multiple currencies (including EUR/USD/GBP/AUD). There is a small booking fee but the tickets are fully exchangeable and refundable right up to the day before travel.

NS Intercity trains: Double-deckers

These double-deckers run as Intercity services throughout the country and are the most common Intercity train type used by the NS.

They are known officially as VIRM (Verlengd InterRegio Materieel) and there are 4 generations of the model.

Some have the newer NS livery:

There is a second type of Intercity double decker which in use on selected routes – the renovated DDZ (DubbelDekkerZonering). These are derived from an older series of double-decker trains.

For double-deckers you need to use stairs in order to access either the lower or upper cabins. There are 4 steps down to the lower cabin and 7 steps up to the upper cabin.

Carrying large baggage can be a bit of an issue on these trains. In the lower cabin the overhead luggage racks in the cabins are very small and cannot take a standard suitcase. The upper cabin has no luggage racks at all.

There is some limited space for a medium size case between the backs of some opposing seats on the older seat configurations. Some passengers with large cases often choose to remain in the area near the doors.

First class is denoted by an additional thin blue stripe on the train exterior and has a 2-1 seating configuration. The 2nd class cabin is generally a 2-2 configuration with a limited number of single seaters at each end.

Renovated VIRM and DDZ trains carry the same latest generation of seats in broadly the same layout. Some cabins contain sofa seating.

There are some older series of seats still in use on the VIRM trains – the last generation VIRM4 is currently being refurbished with modern seating.

NS Intercity trains: Single-deckers

These are known locally as ICM (InterCityMaterieel) and have the nickname Koplopers. With an elevated driver’s cabin reminiscent of a Boeing 747, they are used as Intercity services on a number of routes.

The variation of this train known as ICR (InterCity Rijtuig) with a lower driver’s cabin was removed from service in late 2025.

These train types are actually much better than the double-deckers for travel with luggage, having large overhead racks and no stairs. Most newer configurations are airline-style with 2-2 in 2nd class and 2-1 in 1st class with a directional change in the centre of cabin.

There are some slight variations on seating but the latest configurations look like this:

NS Intercity New Generation

NS has been introducing the new ICNG (Intercity New Generation) trains onto the network. There are 2 versions – the standard ICNG for domestic use and the ICNG for international use.

The trains can run up to 200km/h and are deployed on various lines such as the Eurocity Direct (Lelystad-Amsterdam-Brussels), Intercity Direct (Amsterdam-Breda) and Den Haag-Eindhoven.

The trains have wide entry doors and have different seating zones including some sofas. There is plenty of space for luggage with racks above the seats and some dedicated racks. Most seats have access to a power point and USB charger.

NS Sprinter trains

There are 3 main types of Sprinter trains which are normally used on regional routes as stopping trains. Note that it is possible that these trainsets could be occasionally used as an Intercity service.

There is the SLT (Sprinter Light Train):

Newer versions of the Sprinters are called SNG (Sprinter New Generation) trains. There are 2 variants made by different manufacturers – the more numerous Spanish-made Caf/Civity and the Swiss-made Stadler/Flirt.

Sprinter train seats are in a 2-2 open-cabin configuration – there are no doors separating each carriage. The seating is a mix of directional airline-style and group-facing seats.

There are also pull-down seats near the doors and also in the bicycle compartment (14 seats) which is also handy for those with large cases, wheelchairs and strollers.

There is a reasonable space for small to medium size luggage in the overhead racks. Sprinter trains are currently deployed on the route between Schiphol airport and Amsterdam Centraal.

A small 1st class section is generally found at each end – seats are red in colour and are similar to those in 2nd class, except for a pull down armrest between the seats and extra side headrests on SNG 1st class seats.

Facilities on board NS trains

All NS trains have display screens in the carriages with route information.

Nearly all Intercity trains offer free WiFi on board, marked by the wireless symbol. Some of the new generation of Sprinters also have WiFi available.

There are toiltet (wc) facilities on all Intercity trains and also new generation Sprinters. Note, some older style Sprinters do not have toilets!

All trains (except Intercity Direct) have specially marked areas for carrying bicycles.

All Intercity trains have Quiet Zones (stiltezones) which are marked by an S on the window and a ‘shhh’ symbol. Here silence is requested and talking on mobile phones is discouraged. There are no quiet zones on Sprinters.

Intercity double-decker trains can also have Work and Rest zones (for relaxed travel and quiet talking) and Meet and Greet zones (for a more open, lively atmosphere). These are marked by symbol inside.

Other Dutch Train Operators

On some provincial route you will find various non-NS run train services from the likes of Arriva, Blauwnet, Breng, Connexxion (Valleilijn), Keolis and R-net. You may encounter slightly different trains if using these providers.

International trains

There are a number of international train services running from Amsterdam.

Some international trains – such as the ICE services to Germany and Eurocity Direct to Brussels – can also be used by passengers for travel on Dutch domestic routes.
