
The Eurostar train is undoubtedly the best way to travel between Amsterdam and Paris.
The trip takes just 3 hours 25 mins and brings you directly from the centre of Amsterdam to Paris city centre. It can be easily booked at the Trainline site here (multi-currencies) or the NS International site (euros) with prices starting at only €35 one-way.
Eurostar (formerly Thalys) runs a 10x daily direct train between Amsterdam and Paris using high speed rail tracks.
We’ve made this trip multiple times and so here is our detailed guide to Amsterdam-Paris by Eurostar. The info here is applicable if travelling in either direction.

Amsterdam-Paris Rail Maps & Route
The Eurostar train runs between Paris Gare du Nord and Amsterdam Centraal.

The Amsterdam-Paris service makes a limited number of stops – at Schiphol Airport, Rotterdam Centraal, Antwerpen Centraal and Brussels Zuid/Midi.
Amsterdam-Paris Eurostar: Journey Time & Distance
Total journey time: 3 hours 25 mins
Total distance: 525km (326 miles)
Maximum speed: 300km/h can be reached on the high speed tracks in the Netherlands, Belgium and France. Note there is a speed limit of 160km/h between Antwerp and Brussels.

Eurostar operates continental rail services (red trains) from Paris to Brussels and Amsterdam and between Paris and Cologne. These were formerly the Thalys service. In late 2023, Thalys was rebranded as Eurostar following the merger of Eurostar and Thalys.
It also has cross-channel services (blue trains) from London to Paris, Brussels and Amsterdam.

Amsterdam-Paris Eurostar fares & classes
Tickets for Amsterdam-Paris are generally open for booking 6 months before travel.
Like airfares, Eurostar ticket prices tend to rise the closer to the departure date – so it’s best to book well in advance if possible.
Eurostar has a 3 class service: Eurostar Standard, Eurostar Plus and Eurostar Premier.
Eurostar Standard
- Standard is 2nd class seating (2-2 configuration)
- Food/drink can be purchased at the Eurostar Café bar or kiosk
- Free WiFi is available and seats have EU power outlets
- Standard fares cost €35-€180 for Amsterdam-Paris – cheapest available class
- Exchangeable up to 1 hour before departure (just pay the fare difference)
- Refundable up to 7 days before departure for €25/£25/$40


Eurostar Plus
- Plus is 1st class seating only (2-1 configuration)
- Food/drink can be purchased at the Eurostar Café bar or kiosk
- Free WiFi is available and seats have EU power outlets
- Plus fares cost €79-€185 for Amsterdam-Paris
- Exchangeable up to 1 hour before departure (just pay the fare difference)
- Refundable up to 7 days before departure for €25/£25/$40


Eurostar Premier
- Premier is 1st class seating (2-1 configuration)
- Gourmet meal and drinks (including champagne) served at your seat
- Free WiFi is available and seats have EU power outlets
- Premier fares cost €165-€235 for Amsterdam-Paris
- Exchangeable/refundable up to 48 hours after departure (no fee, just pay the fare difference)
- Lounge access available at Amsterdam Centraal (NS International lounge) and Paris Gare du Nord (Eurostar Premier lounge)

Children and Youth tickets on Eurostar
Small children aged 0-3 can travel for free but must sit on an adult’s lap throughout the journey. Baby changing facilities are available on board.
Children aged 4-11 get a discounted fares on Standard and Plus tickets. The reduction is 30% on peak period tickets and 30-50% during off-peak periods.
Youths age 12-25 get up to 20% off Standard and 15% off Plus and Premier fares, subject to availability.

Amsterdam-Paris Eurostar train
Eurostar (formerly Thalys) uses 2 train versions on the Amsterdam-Paris route – both of which are TGV variants manufactured by GEC-Alsthom:
- PBA (3-voltage set deployed for Paris/Brussels/Amsterdam routes, hence the name)
- PBKA (4-voltage set deployed for Paris/Brussels/Köln/Amsterdam routes)


The trainsets have 2 power cars and 8 carriages. The trains have either the original Thalys seating or the newer refurbished ‘Ruby’ interior with capacity as follows:
- Original interior has 376 seats (256 2nd class and 120 1st class). In addition there are 23 folding seats and 2 wheelchair spots.
- Ruby interior has 399 seats (288 2nd class and 111 1st class). In addition there are 28 folding seats and 2 wheelchair spots.

Some train services can be a double train with 16 carriages. The coach numbers are marked on a display near the external doors. Seat numbers in each carriage are also clearly marked above the window.

Facilities on board the Eurostar (formerly Thalys)
- The windows on the Eurostar trains are medium size with quite a blank wall space between each window.
- Free WiFi is available at to all passengers, faster speeds for Plus/Premier passengers.
- European power outlets are available at the seats.
- Toilet facilities are available at the ends of each carriage.
- Eurostar (former Thalys) trains have a kiosk or vending machine for drinks and snacks.
- For those with accessibility needs please contact Eurostar in advance. Assistance can be arranged at both ends of your journey.
Luggage on Eurostar
Unlike flying there are no extra charges for bringing luggage with you on your Eurostar journey. The train has overhead luggage racks above the seats and also some extra racks at the end of the carriages.

Standard and Plus passengers can bring 2 pieces of regular luggage up to 75cm long and 1 small item of hand luggage. Children are allowed 1 piece of luggage and 1 hand luggage.
Premier passengers can bring 3 pieces of luggage and 1 item of hand luggage.
There are no weight limits but you must be able to carry these on board yourself and they must be able to fit into the luggage racks. You cannot leave your luggage in the aisles.
If you require extra luggage this can be purchased as an extra.

Bicycles on the Amsterdam-Paris Eurostar
It is possible to bring a disassembled bike (both wheels removed) with everything covered onboard the Eurostar train. It can have a maximum dimensions of 135 x 85 x 30 cm.
Bringing a bike on Eurostar (formerly Thalys) is charged at €30.
Folding bikes can be brought on board for free as long as they are completely covered and are within the 75cm luggage limit.
Amsterdam-Paris train trip scenery
The rail journey between Amsterdam and London is not particularly renowned for its scenery though there are a few points of interest!
- Views of Rotterdam’s modern skyline.

- Crossing the Hollandsch Diep by bridge.

- Coming into Antwerp, crossing the Albertkanaal railway bridge with distant views of the spectacular Port Authority Building designed by architect Zaha Hadid.
- Passing through Mechelen with fleeting views of the St Rumbold’s Tower on the Grote Markt.
- Sweeping views of Brussels.

- Rolling plains of northern France.

Amsterdam Central Station
The magnificent Amsterdam Centraal station was completed in 1889. It was designed by Pierre Cuypers who was the noted architect of the city’s Rijksmuseum.

The modernised section of the station at the IJ waterfront side features shops, restaurants and some great views.

Premier passengers can get access to the basic NS International/Regus lounge at Amsterdam Centraal. You can only get a hot drink or soft drink and no food is served.

It is located on platform 1 at Amsterdam Central – you need to pass through the passenger gate barriers with your ticket barcode.

Paris Gare du Nord station
Paris Gare du Nord Nord station is located in the 10th arrondissement of Paris. Originally opened in 1846, it has been redeveloped a number of times since. It is Europe’s busiest railway station with over 200 million annual passengers.

The café-styled Eurostar Premier lounge in Gare du Nord is open to continental Premier passengers-only serving drinks and light snacks. It is located just outside the station at 22 Rue du Dunkerque, 75010, Paris.
