Canvas is a rooftop café-restaurant and club on the 7th floor of the Volkshotel located just south-east of central Amsterdam.
The outdoor panorama terrace at Canvas offers fine sweeping views of southern Amsterdam.
The building was opened originally in 1965 as the head office of newspaper Volkskrant, a left-leaning Dutch broadsheet. The top floor was used as a canteen and meeting spot for journalists.
In 2007 the newspaper moved to other premises and the building, which had become rather run-down was taken over as a work hub for entrepreneurs and start-ups.
The top floor canteen was converted into Canvas op de 7e, which became a popular rooftop cafe-club in Amsterdam. In 2013 the building was subsequently closed and a major renovation project began.
In summer 2014 the building reopened as the 172 room, 3-star Volkshotel which includes a fully refurbished Canvas. You can book rooms at the Volkshotel here
Food at Canvas is of a good eetcafé standard serving vegan/veggie/meat/fish dishes – the lunch menu from 1200-1600 consists of a small range of sandwiches, burgers and salads; the dinner menu has a variety of main courses. The bar offers an extensive drinks list from wines to cocktails.
A buffet breakfast (€16 or €10 for children 0-10) is also available daily at Canvas.
On Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays night after 2000 Canvas becomes a club with dance floor and guest DJ.
The outside roof terrace is north facing towards the city centre with views also available to the west and east – with a sharp eye you can spot many of Amsterdam’s main sights.
Klein Canvas is a private meeting/function room area (84 m²) on the 7th floor with panoramic views and private terrace. It is available for hire for events up to 80 people.
Canvas is a relaxed place to come for a drink/bite to eat and if you visit in the evening you could watch the sunset (Amsterdam weather permitting!)
