With around 750 outdoor stalls (500 indoor stalls in winter) it is the largest regular flea market in the Netherlands and one of the biggest in Europe.

NDSM wharf can be easily reached from the back of Amsterdam Central station by hopping on the free GVB ferry. The trip takes about 15 minutes and offers some great views of the IJ river and Amsterdam’s waterfront development.

IJ-Hallen is either hosted outside in the former shipyard terrain area or inside one of the large warehouse buildings. The market is a short walk from the NDSM ferry wharf.

Note that the entire IJ-Hallen market is fenced off and an admission fee is required to enter the grounds. Tickets can be purchased online or at the outside kiosk.

We would estimate that about 2/3 of the stalls are selling second-hand and vintage clothes. But you will also find assorted bric-a-brac for sale in the form of accessories, furniture, homeware, vinyl records, bikes, books, antiques, old cameras and so on.

It is actually a bit reminiscent of the annual King’s Day free market in April where people sell their wares on the streets.

Prices are cheap and open to negotiation. This is not really the place to look for high-end antique pieces though you might find that gem of a bargain if you get there early.

Do bring cash with you as not all sellers will accept card payments. And bring spare bags if you plan to purchase a few items.

Most of the stall-holders are hobbyists and amateurs. If you are on the selling side, a standard stall is 4m by 1.10m and is available to rent for €36 per day whilst corner stands go for €42 per day. It is possible to bring a vehicle to the stall.

As a visitor, if you wish to temporarily leave the market then get a stamp on your hand which will allow you to re-enter later on that day.

The market itself has a few food trucks inside but queues can be long. However, there are a number of good restaurants/cafés around NDSM wharf such as IJKantine, IJver, Noorderlicht and Pllek.

The market is popular with both locals and visitors alike. Just a couple of things to watch out for – obviously it can get crowded so beware of pickpockets. Also, mind your step as the floors can be uneven in places – both indoors and outdoors.

If you love vintage and enjoy browsing flea markets then a visit to IJ-Hallen will make for a fun-filled few hours. Especially whilst surrounded by the post-industrial landscape of the eclectic NDSM-wharf area.

Amsterdam The Style Outlets is run by the Spanish NEINVER group which also has outlets in France, Germany, Italy, Spain.

The outlet is located in the town of Halfweg on the former site of the CSM Sugar Factory which operated from 1919 to 1992. The area known as SugarCity is slowly being developed as a multi-purpose facility which will include events/conferences, shopping and a marina.

The area has a post-industrial charm as you will see if you arrive by train or bus. You will pass the former Sugar Silos, which are now modern office buildings.

Most of the shops in Amsterdam The Style Outlets are fashion/clothing/footwear/accessories – the largest stores being from Adidas, Only, Intrend, Nike, Puma, S. Oliver and Skechers.

There are cooking/homeware themed stores from Le Creuset, Tefal and WMF.

There are 3 entrances to the site – named Milan, Paris and London. If you are coming from the station you will arrive at the Milan entrance. You will find maps to guide you around the mall.

• There are about 5 café/restaurant options – The Burger Federation, Coffee Fellows, Pommes Frites, Selva Oro and Starbucks.
• Free WiFi is available on site.

How To Get To Amsterdam The Style Outlets

The town of Halfweg sits between Amsterdam and Haarlem.

TRAIN: A Sprinter train service (directions either Hoorn or Zandvoort-aan-Zee) runs up to 4x hourly from Amsterdam Centraal to the Halfweg-Zwanenburg station. These usually leave from platform 1 at Amsterdam Centraal and also make a stop at Amsterdam Sloterdijk.

The journey takes just 10 minutes and a day return ticket costs €7.40 (2nd class) or €13.32 (1st class) – 2026 prices. Note, there is a €1.60 surcharge for disposable tickets.

Use the footbridge to cross over the road and follow the signs to the outlet. Cross the Kalkovenplein square and continue past the Sugar Silos.

BUS: Connexxion bus 80 runs up to 4x hourly from Amsterdam Elandsgracht to Zandvoort and makes a stop at Halfweg-Zwanenburg station.

Opened in 2001, the Batavia Stad Fashion Outlet was the country’s first outlet complex and today contains around 150 shops from local and international brands. Expect discounts of around 30% off standard retail prices and up to 70% for limited special offers.

Do remember that high street Dutch prices for clothes are often higher than in the UK, US and other markets – so you might find prices a little on the high side for an outlet.

The outlet site has various cafés/fast-food joints including a spacious La Place self-service restaurant which has water views.

How To Get to Batavia Stad by Public Transport

Intercity trains from NS Dutch Railways run half-hourly between Amsterdam Central station and Lelystad Centrum. The journey takes 38 minutes with a change at Almere Centrum.

Alternatively, from Amsterdam Zuid you can take the comfortable Eurocity Direct/Intercity Direct services to Leystad Centrum.

The standard day return fare (Amsterdam Centraal-Lelystad) is €26.60 (2026) plus €1.60 extra for a disposable ticket.

From Lelystad Centrum station you can take EBS RRReis bus 3 (half-hourly) which reaches Batavia Stad in 11 minutes. Pay €2.27 for a single trip or check-in and out with a contactless debit/credit card or OV-chip card.

The Netherlands isn’t generally renowned for discount shopping and bargain basement prices. It’s no surprise that the Designer Outlet Roermond has become popular with those seeking branded discounts and the chance to visit stores not normally available on the local high street.

Generally, expect about 30% off the standard retail price and up to 70% off selected sale items.

The location is in the small city of Roermond in the province of Limburg. Whilst that may seem a strange choice, the catchment area includes the likes of Eindhoven and Maastricht in the Netherlands, Mönchengladbach, Düsseldorf and Cologne in Germany plus Liège, Brussels and Antwerp in Belgium.

The outdoor mall is smartly designed and features international fashion labels and brands.

This includes the likes of Adidas, Armani, Balenciaga, BOSS, Brax, Burberry, Calvin Klein, Diesel, Dolce & Gabbana, G-Star Raw, Gant, Gucci, Guess, HUGO, Jack&Jones, Lacoste, Levi’s, Marlies Dekkers, Michael Kors, Nike, Polo Ralph Lauren, Prada, Puma, Samsonite, Skechers, Superdry, The North Face, Tommy Hilfiger, Versace, Zegna.

• We have visited a few times during weekends and mall can get quite busy. Try to arrive early in the day or visit during the week.
• Many of the stores are quite compact in size although the main brands have larger stores.

How To Get to Designer Outlet Roermond by Public Transport

Dutch Railways (NS) Intercity trains operate up to 4x hourly between Amsterdam and Roermond. The journey takes about 1 hour 55 minutes running via Utrecht, Den Bosch and Eindhoven. The trains continue on to either Maastricht or Heerlen.

Purchase tickets at the official NS (Dutch Railways) site here or book at the Trainline site (multi-currencies).

The outlet mall is about 10-15 minutes walk from Roermond station.

Come out of the station, cross the road and walk over the Stationsplein square. Follow the signs to the “Designer Outlet”.

The walking route takes you through the picturesque city centre and includes passing the Roermond Minster (Munsterkerk), Market Square and St Christopher’s Cathedral. Finally, take the underpass and bear right past the city council offices and you arrive at the outlet mall.

When walking back you could consider taking a short detour from the cathedral to the Roerkade riverside area.

An alternative to the train trip is direct bus transportation from your hotel in Amsterdam to the Roermond outlet.

There is also a mall shuttle bus running during the weekends from Düsseldorf station – departing 10:00 and returning 17:00.

Two other outlets in the Netherlands:
