Amsterdam The Style Outlets is an outdoor shopping mall which is located between Amsterdam and Haarlem. It opened in 2020 and is the only outlet centre in the Randstad area of the Netherlands. It contains around 100 Dutch and international branded stores.

Amsterdam The Style Outlets is run by the Spanish NEINVER group which also has outlets in France, Germany, Italy, Spain.

The outlet is located in the town of Halfweg on the former site of the CSM Sugar Factory which operated from 1919 to 1992. The area known as SugarCity is slowly being developed as a multi-purpose facility which will include events/conferences, shopping and a marina.

The area has a post-industrial charm as you will see if you arrive by train or bus. You will pass the former Sugar Silos, which are now modern office buildings.

The Batavia Stad Fashion Outlet is an outdoor discount mall in the city of Lelystad about 60km drive north-east of Amsterdam. It is quite similar in set-up to the larger Designer Outlet Roermond which is located further away in the south of the Netherlands.

There is also Amsterdam The Style Outlets located at Halfweg-Zwanenburg, a few km west from Amsterdam.

Opened in 2001, the Batavia Stad Fashion Outlet was the country’s first outlet complex and today contains around 150 shops from local and international brands. Expect discounts of around 30% off standard retail prices and up to 70% for limited special offers.

Do remember that high street Dutch prices for clothes are often higher than in the UK, US and other markets – so you might find prices a little on the high side for an outlet.

The Designer Outlet Roermond is a fashion outlet mall located near the Dutch-German border in the south of the Netherlands.

It is run by the McArthurGlen Group – the Roermond location has around 200 branded stores and is the largest mall in their international portfolio.

The Netherlands isn’t generally renowned for discount shopping and bargain basement prices. It’s no surprise that the Designer Outlet Roermond has become popular with those seeking branded discounts and the chance to visit stores not normally available on the local high street.

Generally, expect about 30% off the standard retail price and up to 70% off selected sale items.

Entrance to the Roermond Designer Outlet mall

The location is in the small city of Roermond in the province of Limburg. Whilst that may seem a strange choice, the catchment area includes the likes of Eindhoven and Maastricht in the Netherlands, Mönchengladbach, Düsseldorf and Cologne in Germany plus Liège, Brussels and Antwerp in Belgium.

The outdoor mall is smartly designed and features international fashion labels and brands.

This includes the likes of Adidas, Armani, Balenciaga, BOSS, Brax, Burberry, Calvin Klein, Diesel, Dolce & Gabbana, G-Star Raw, Gant, Gucci, Guess, HUGO, Jack&Jones, Lacoste, Levi’s, Marlies Dekkers, Michael Kors, Nike, Polo Ralph Lauren, Prada, Puma, Samsonite, Skechers, Superdry, The North Face, Tommy Hilfiger, Versace, Zegna.

Shoppers at the Roermond mall

Whilst the main focus is on clothes, shoes and sportswear you will also find cooking/homeware themed stores from Dyson, Le Creuset, Möve, Villeroy & Boch, Waterdrop, WMF and Zwilling.

There are 26 café/restaurant options on site including 3 La Place outlets, Wagamama, Le Pain Quotidien, The Burger Federation, Starbucks and various fast-food outlets.

La Place has great views over the nearby Maas river and harbour

We have visited a few times during weekends and mall can get quite busy. Try to arrive early in the day or visit during the week.

Many of the stores are quite compact in size although the main brands have larger stores.

Free WiFi is available using the “Roermond Free WiFi” network.

McArthurGlen Loyalty Club is the outlet’s loyalty program.

Non-EU visitors can get VAT refunds on purchases over €50 in the same store when leaving the EU within 90 days – get a tax refund form in the store and then go to Guest Services for the refund. The VAT rate is 21% standard and 9% for food.

Designer outlet malls tend to sell last season/end-of-line items; you should be aware that some retailers do manufacture special (and cheaper) lines just for outlets.

Paid lockers are available by the restrooms near the Adidas and Polo Ralph Lauren stores.

There is a multi-storey parking garage and outside parking areas which cost €7.00 per day. There are a number of electric charging points. There are premium parking spots near the entrance which cost €12.50 per day.

You can book a rental car with Discover Cars here which checks all the main rental firms.

The walking route takes you through the picturesque city centre and includes passing the Roermond Minster (Munsterkerk), Market Square and St Christopher’s Cathedral. Finally, take the underpass and bear right past the city council offices and you arrive at the outlet mall.

Amsterdam has a number of bookstores selling English books. There are actually 4 dedicated English language book shops in the city whilst some Dutch bookstores also stock a range of English titles.

Both US and UK published books are well represented – however you will pay a local premium over the usual dollar or pound cover price for new books. The Dutch book market is strictly regulated and in general prices tend to be quite high.

There are a number of bookshops located around the Spui square area – a weekly book market is also held there every Friday.

Major English Bookstores in Amsterdam

American Book Center (ABC)

ABC is an Amsterdam institution, having been set up as a bargain bookstore in 1972 by two Americans. For years it was located on the Kalverstraat shopping street – however since 2006 it has made its home on the picturesque Spui square.

Still a fiercely independent, family-run business, the current store is spread over 3 floors with a huge selection of American and British titles. It claims to be the best stocked English language bookstore in continental Europe.

The American Book Center (ABC) in Amsterdam

The ground floor houses sections on art & design, fashion, music, photography, sport and a good selection of British and US magazines. Check out the tree trunk on display which goes up through the ceiling to the first floor.

Magazines on ground floor
