Amsterdam Amstel is a residential and business district in the south of Amsterdam located around the Amstel river. The skyline at Amstel includes the Rembrandt Tower, Amsterdam’s tallest building.
It is served by Amsterdam Amstel station which offers multiple transport connections and there are a number of hotel options for visitors in the area.
Getting to Amsterdam Amstel
Amsterdam Amstel is relatively easy to reach by the city’s extensive public transport network – however there are no direct links to Schiphol airport other than taxi.
Train: Amsterdam Amstel
NS Dutch Railways operates Intercity and Sprinter trains from Amsterdam Amstel station.
This monumental station opened in 1939 and features 2 transport-themed murals designed by visual artist Peter Alma (1886-1969). These are found in the main station hall to the east of the rail platforms which run north-south.
The murals are 9m high and 20m wide and are grandly titled “The global significance of the railway system, and its technical progress“.
There are only 2 rail platforms at Amstel – platform 1 for northbound trains and platform 4 southbound trains. The following Intercity services stop at Amsterdam Amstel:
- Nijmegen via Utrecht/Ede-Wageningen/Arnhem Centraal
- Maastricht or Heerlen via Utrecht/s’Hertogenbosch/Eindhoven
- Den Helder or Hoorn/Enkhuizen via Amsterdam Central/Sloterdijk
There are also these Sprinter services:
- Uitgeest via Amsterdam Centraal
- Rotterdam Centraal via Bijlmer-Arena/Breukelen/Woerden/Gouda
- Driebergen-Zeist via Bijlmer-Arena/Breukelen/Utrecht
To reach Amsterdam Amstel by train-only from Schiphol Airport you need to make a single change. This is possible at various stations including Amsterdam Bijlmer-Arena, Duivendrecht, Amsterdam Sloterdijk or Amsterdam Centraal. The trip takes 25-35 minutes.
The cost of a one-way train ticket (2026 prices) from Schiphol Airport to Amsterdam Amstel is €5.10 (2nd class) or €7.14 (1st class) plus a €1.60 surcharge if purchasing a disposable train ticket.
If travelling between Amsterdam Centraal and Amsterdam Amstel, the train fare is €3.00 (2nd class) or €4.20 (1st class) plus the €1.60 surcharge if purchasing a disposable train ticket. The trip takes just 7 minutes.
Current facilities at Amsterdam Amstel station include Albert Heijn To Go (supermarket), backWERK (bakery), Bruna (newsagents), ETOS (chemist), Julia’s (pasta) and a Starbucks (coffee).
Metro: Amstelstation (M51/53/54)
Amstelstation is the name of the metro station at Amsterdam Amstel railway station. The metro trains run from the 2 central platforms.
To access the platforms (metro or trains) you need to scan a ticket at the respective gate barriers. There are separate barriers for train and metro travel.
If connecting at Amstel (train to metro, or vice versa) there are card readers on the platform where you can check-out and re-check-in.
Metro lines serving Amstel are the M51 (Centraal Station-Isolatorweg), M53 (Centraal Station-Gaasperplas) and M54 (Centraal Station-Gein).
The metro is useful in that you can directly reach all other major metro/train stations in Amsterdam – including Amsterdam Biijlmer-Arena, Amsterdam Centraal, Amsterdam RAI, Amsterdam Sloterdijk and Amsterdam Zuid.
Amsterdam Amstel lies about 3km south of Amsterdam Central station. The metro runs more frequently between Amstel and Central Station than the train.

The metro is operated by city transport company GVB. For metro travel you will either need a GVB 1 hour single ticket (€3.40) or consider one of these better value multi-day tickets:

Trams at Amsterdam Amstel
GVB Tram 12 runs from Amsterdam Central to Amstelstation and travels via Dam, Leidseplein and the city’s museum district (Rijksmuseum/Van Gogh Museum/Stedelijk). The tram stop at Amstel is found on Julianaplein just outside the station on the north-eastern side.

Taxi to/from Amsterdam Amstel
A taxi is the most comfortable and convenient way to get between Amstel and the airport as no changes are required.
A taxi from Schiphol airport to Amsterdam Amstel will cost €45-€60. Uber and Bolt are also present in the city and have similar fares to standard taxis.
A taxi between Amsterdam Central and Amsterdam Amstel will cost €15-€25.
