Cost of Flat/House Rental in Amsterdam

Renting a flat or house in Amsterdam is likely to be your biggest monthly outgoing. Prices range from cheaper flat shares, social housing (you will either have to wait some years on the list, have a Dutch partner renting one or be lucky to find a sublet) to more expensive properties on the private rental market.

Netherlands Interest Rates

Netherlands is in the Eurozone and uses the euro (€) as its currency.

The European Central Bank (ECB) sets interest rates across the entire eurozone. Netherlands interest rates are therefore set by the ECB.

There are 2 key rates:

• Deposit Rate (banks use this to make overnight deposits with the ECB)
• Base rate (also called Main refinancing operations, a higher rate where banks can borrow funds from the ECB on a weekly basis)

• Following the 2007-8 financial crisis Eurozone interest rates were reduced to practically 0%
• The deposit rate was actually negative between 2014-2022
• Interest rates rose in 2022-23 with the deposit rate peaking at 4.00%
• Interest rates were cut 7 times during 2024-45 down to 2.00% (deposit rate)
• Rates were raised 25 basis points on 17 June 2026

De Nederlandsche Bank (DNB) is the national central bank for the Netherlands within the Eurosystem. It is headquartered in Amsterdam and manages the the Dutch deposit guarantee scheme.

When the guilder was replaced by the Euro in 2002 the DNB stopped setting interest rates in the Netherlands.

How to Choose a Savings Account in the Netherlands

Choosing the best savings account in the Netherlands depends on your goals, flexibility needs and risk preferences. Here are a few key factors:

1. Variable vs Fixed Interest Rates

Variable savings accounts (spaarrekening or flexibel sparen) offer the most flexibility and you can generally withdraw your money at any time. However the underlying rate can change.

Fixed-term deposits (deposito) on the other hand offers a fixed higher interest rate, but your money is locked in for a set period (e.g. 1 or 2 years). Interest rates are usually higher for longer dated terms, however the yield curve flattens out after about 2 years.

If you think you may need access to your funds, a variable account is usually the better choice.

2. Interest Rate (and Bonus Rates)

Some banks offer introductory bonus rates for new customers but note these typically last only a few months. Make sure to check the standard rate after the bonus period ends as your rate could fall significantly.

3. Deposit Guarantee Scheme (Safety)

As we have seen, savings in the Netherlands and across the EU are protected under the
Deposit Guarantee Scheme. This covers up to €100,000 per bank (or banking group) per person. De Nederlandsche Bank manages this facility in the Netherlands.

4. Foreign vs Dutch Banks

Many of the highest savings rates in the Dutch market come from foreign EU banks. These are generally run via online platforms such as Raisin and there may be no physical branches in the Netherlands. Customer service could be international rather than local.

5. Minimum Deposits & Withdrawal Conditions

Some accounts require a minimum deposit – for example Bigbank requires €1,000 minimum for a fixed rate account. Some accounts may have restrictions on withdrawals so always check the terms before opening an account.

6. Taxes on Savings (Box 3)

Assets and savings in the Netherlands are subject to ‘Box 3’ reporting on tax returns. Any assets are taxed on assumed returns, not on the actual interest earned. See more on taxation in the Netherlands

7. Ease of Use & Access

You should also consider some practical factors such as whether there is an English-language interface, how quickly accounts can be opened, what are the ID requirements, how easy it is to deposit or withdraw funds. Neobanks like bunq and N26 offer an app-based banking ecosystem.

Banks using English portals for Netherlands customers are: ABN Amro, Anadolubank, bunq, N26 and Yapi Kredi.

Stena Line Harwich-Hoek van Holland Timetable (2026)

Here is a map showing the North Sea route between Harwich and Hoek van Holland.

Harwich International port is in the county of Essex and lies on the south bank of the river Stour. On the opposite flank is the port of Felixstowe in Suffolk county, the largest container port in the UK.

Hoek van Holland (Hook of Holland) lies on the south-western corner of Zuid Holland province on the Nieuwe Waterweg shipping canal. The Port of Rotterdam, Europe’s largest port lies on the southern side of the canal.

The straight-line distance between Harwich and Hoek van Holland ferry terminals is 197km (122 miles) – calculated with Google Maps.

According to a signpost at Hoek van Holland beach the distance to Harwich is 194km.

During the sailing, live GPS position of the ship is available through one of the TV channels.

Stena Line Ships on Harwich-Hoek route

The sister ships Stena Britannica and Stena Hollandica ply the route over the North Sea. The ships are very comfortable akin to a small floating hotel.

Let’s look at some stats and numbers for the Stena Hollandica and Stena Britannica ships:

• the ships are 240m long with a beam width of 32m
• the ships were built in 2010 in Wismar, Germany
• there are 538 cabins with a total of 1,376 beds
• they have capacity for 1,200 passengers
• they can transport 230 cars and 300 freight vehicles
• each ship has 12 decks
• they can sail at 22 knots (41 km/h)

Stena Britannica/Hollandica ship facilities

The 2 ships underwent a significant refurbishment in 2024. This significantly improved and increased the seating capacity at the main passenger area on level 9.

Facilities includes the Taste self-service restaurant, the Riva bar, the Social Cafe & Bar, a duty-free shop, a guest services desk and a Family Hub area with kids corner.

The paid Stena Plus Lounge has been moved to replace the previous a la carte restaurant. It is a quiet sitting area with complimentary snacks, non-alcoholic drinks and house wine, newspapers and WiFi – available to paying passengers aged 8 and above. Entrance costs from £25 or €29.

At the back of the ship you can head out on deck for some sea air although a lot of smokers seem to congregate here.

Stena Britannica/Hollandica Cabins

The on-board cabins are well appointed with decent beds, compact toilet/shower, tea/coffee making facilities and TV (English and Dutch channels). All the cabins are located on floors 10 and 11.

You can choose inside cabins or outside cabins with windows. There a various cabin configurations including single, 2-berth and family (3-berth, 4-berth and 5-berth).

Higher level cabins – Comfort Class, Captain’s Class and the Captain’s Suite – include a free minibar.

The spacious Captain’s Suite at the front corner of the ship is an excellent choice. It is a combined bedroom-living room area with double bed, toilet/shower, sofa/seats, 3 large porthole windows, free minibar and 2 TVs.

Stena Line: Harwich-Hoek van Holland Fares

Fares are priced in pounds or euros depending on whether you book from UK or the Netherlands.

• Car + driver starts from £94/€107 one-way with each additional passenger priced from £32/€37.
• Foot passengers fares start from £57/€66 one-way.

Fares are split into economy (non-refundable), flexi (refundable) and premium (refundable with lounge access).

Note, on overnight sailings you are obliged to pay extra for a cabin. Prices of the cabins vary between £51-£214/€57-€251 – depending on cabin type and fare level. Cabin prices are half-price on day sailings.

Stena Line Rail & Sail – Dutch Flyer Service

The Rail & Sail ticket is a combination ticket which includes the Stena Line ferry and travel on Greater Anglia (GA) train services between Harwich International and London Liverpool Street.

Note that on the Dutch side, NS (Dutch Railways) has suspended its pre-booked Rail&Sail tickets for rail travel in the Netherlands until further notice. You can still book separate Dutch metro and rail tickets instead.

Trains on the UK side

Greater Anglia is a nationalised rail company which runs trains from London to various destinations including Harwich, Ipswich, Chelmsford, Colchester, Norwich and Cambridge. The Rail & Sail ticket is valid to/from any station on the GA network.

The trip between London Liverpool Street and Harwich International ferry terminal is about 1 hour 20 minutes, timetabled as follows:

For connecting onto the Harwich day sailing to Holland, a GA train leaves London Liverpool St. at 06:30 (Mon-Fri), 06:36 (Sat) and 06:45 (Sun) arriving in Harwich International at 07:51 (Mon-Fri), 07:59 (Sat) and 08:11 (Sun).

For connecting onto the overnight sailing to Holland, a GA train departs London Liverpool St at 20:36 (Mon-Fri) and 20:00 (Sat-Sun) arriving in Harwich International at 21:59 (Mon-Fri) and 21:16 (Sat-Sun).

For connections to London after arriving at Harwich on the day service, a GA train departs Harwich International at 20:45 (Mon-Sat), 20:30 (Sun), arriving at London Liverpool St. at 22:14 (Mon-Sat), 21:43 (Sun).

Finally, connections to London from the overnight ferry, a GA train departs Harwich International at 07:09 (Mon-Fri), 07:20 (Sat-Sun), arriving at London Liverpool St. at 08:53 (Mon-Fri, 08:44 (Sat-Sun).

Metro/Trains on the Dutch side

On the Dutch side the RET Metro Line B operates from Hoek van Holland Haven towards Rotterdam in direction Nesselande. See our Rotterdam Metro map.

If you are travelling onwards to Amsterdam you have 2 options:

• A metro ticket (RET 2 Hour) costs €5.50 – or check-in/out with your debit card which for Hoek-Schiedam will cost around €5.30. A single train ticket between Schiedam Centrum and Amsterdam Centraal costs €19.50 – 2026 prices.

From Rotterdam Centraal fast and comfortable Intercity Direct trains run to Amsterdam Centraal. These take just 40 minutes but require an extra €3.20 supplement on top of the €20.20 fare.

From Rotterdam you can also connect to many other destinations on the Dutch rail network.

Stena Line Rail & Sail Prices

Rail & Sail tickets with the GA rail+ferry components are priced at £75/€89 each way (£38/€44 for children 4-15).

If you have the time the Stena Line ferry is an excellent way to travel between the south-east England and the Netherlands. Having done this sailing on a good number of occasions, we have found the trip to be very comfortable. We recommend getting a cabin even on the day sailing.

If you are not keen on flying or simply enjoy travelling by ship then these UK-Holland ferries could be a good way to get to Amsterdam or Rotterdam – particularly if you live on the eastern side of England.

They are also convenient if you want to bring your own car or vehicle to the Netherlands.

UK to Holland ferry map

1. Harwich – Hook of Holland (Stena Line)

Stena Line runs a daily and nightly ferry service both ways between Harwich and Hoek van Holland (Hook of Holland). You can book the Harwich-Hook of Holland ferry here

The 240m sister ships Stena Britannica and Stena Hollandica ply the route over the North Sea and the trip takes roughly 7 hours.

The large King Seaways and Princess Seaways ferries operate on the route. There are a range of cabins on offer: inside cabins, sea-view cabins, economy cabins and premium cabins (Commodore and Commodore De Luxe). There is a Commodore De Luxe lounge available on King Seaways.

Other on-board facilities include the Explorer’s Kitchen and North Sea Bistro restaurants, Coffee Crew café, games area, a cinema, 4 bars, casino and a nightclub.

Ijmuiden is a seaside port about 24 km west of Amsterdam – don’t be put off by the large Tata steel works close by! It has a marina with a Leonardo hotel and the start of a good (blue-flag) beach running south.

DFDS has a bus service for passengers between the Felison Terminal at IJmuiden and Amsterdam Central. The journey takes about 30-45 minutes.

At Amsterdam Central station the DFDS bus goes from the bus stop at De Ruijterkade 153. The bus departs back to the ferry port between 15:30 and 16:00. Tickets can be reserved online from £9/€10 each way.

Public transport options are available but not so convenient as they require walking and multiple changes – better to stick with the DFDS bus or take a taxi.

A taxi from the Ijmuiden ferry terminal to central Amsterdam would cost €70-€140. You can book a taxi with Sneleentaxi here

There is a DFDS bus service from International passenger Terminal (North Shields port) to Newcastle city centre (Bewick Street near the station) which costs from £7 each way and takes 20-30 minutes. Or walk from the port to Percy Main station (15-20 mins) and take the metro to Newcastle.

Prices for the ferry vary considerably depending on season.

For a standard ferry crossing, prices for a 2 bed inside cabin start from around £78/€90 each way. Add about £93/€109 for a car each way.

3. Hull – Rotterdam (P&O Ferries)

P&O (owned by DP World) operates a daily overnight ferry service between Hull and Rotterdam Europoort terminal. The crossings take 11-12 hours using the 215m long Pride of Rotterdam and Pride of Hull ships.

These ships have 12 decks and have 546 cabins with capacity for 1,360 passengers, 250 cars and 400 freight vehicles.

Europe is 1 hour ahead of UK time

Facilities on-board ship include The Brasserie restaurant, The Kitchen buffet restaurant, a coffee bar, a paid Club Lounge, a show bar with live entertainment, a shop, cinema and kids play area.

Choice of cabins are Standard (bunks), Premier (twin beds or double bed), Club (TV, minibar) and the top-of-the-range Club Stateroom cabin and Club Suite cabin.

Be aware that the Europoort terminal is some 37km from Rotterdam centre. A special bus service (operated by De Jong Tours) can be pre-booked with P&O that runs from Europoort Rotterdam to central Rotterdam (international bus stop at Conradstraat).

At the UK end, buses run from Hull port (King George Dock) to the Paragon Interchange, Stand 38.

Ferry prices vary depending on season, cabin booked and type of ticket (Standard, Flexi or Fully Flexi). For 2 foot passengers in a standard cabin expect to pay from about £130/€150 each way.
