This Amsterdam city pass is issued by ‘amsterdam&partners’, a not-for-profit public-private organisation under its ‘I amsterdam’ brand.

In this article we offer a detailed review of the I amsterdam City Card. We’ll take a look at the costs, benefits and drawbacks of this card, whether the card is worth it and suggest how you could maximise its use.

Officially the card is known as the ‘I amsterdam City Card‘ although some confuse the name as ‘Iamsterdam’ City Card, ‘I am amsterdam’ card or the Iamsterdam City Pass.

The I amsterdam City Card in 2026 comes with 5 validity options:

From the table you can see that the card becomes successively better value for the longer validity periods. The 1 day card will set you back €67 – in contrast, the difference between a 4 day and 5 day card is only €10.

The digital card can be bought online. If you wish to have a physical card take your confirmation to I amsterdam store (IJ-side) at Amsterdam Central station who should be able to switch it over. They can also handle any other queries/issues about the card.

Are there any discounts for purchasing the I amsterdam City Card for children, students or seniors 65+?

No there are no discount options available for the I amsterdam City Card for children, students and seniors.

Don’t forget that many museums in Amsterdam allow free entry to kids – this means the I amsterdam card is sometimes not worth purchasing for under 10s, depending on the museums you want to visit.

However, if you plan to visit attractions such as NEMO Science Museum and ARTIS Zoo (which both charge standard entry fees to young children) then getting the card could be worthwhile.

Which museums and attractions in and around Amsterdam offer free entry to I amsterdam City Card holders?

There are over 40 museums and 5 attractions in the city which give free entry to I amsterdam City Card holders. The card affords a single visit only – multiple visits are not permitted.

Does the I amsterdam city card give free entry to the Anne Frank House in Amsterdam?

No, unfortunately the card does not offer free or discounted entry to the Anne Frank House museum. If you wish to visit the Anne Frank House you must buy your tickets with a date/timeslot directly from the museum.

Does the I amsterdam city card give free entry to the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam?

No. Since 1 June 2022 the I amsterdam City Card is no longer valid for free entry to the Van Gogh Museum. You would need to buy a separate ticket and book a timeslot to visit the museum.

Which other major museum in Amsterdam is NOT valid for free entry with the I amsterdam city card?

Please be aware that the I amsterdam City Card does not offer free entry to the Royal Palace (Koninklijk Paleis).

Does the I amsterdam City Card give free entry to museums outside Amsterdam?

The card is also valid for free entry at the following places:

Note, the included GVB transport pass would only allow you to get to COBRA museum in Amstelveen.

How does the I amsterdam City Card work?

For the digital version of the card you need to download the official I amsterdam City Card app for iPhone or Android. The app features an interactive map and gives a full up-to-date listing of locations available on the card.

You follow the instructions to add your card into the app. When you are then ready to use the card in Amsterdam you can simply activate it.

Via the app you can transfer cards to family/group members, though note you can only transfer a card once.

You scan the code when entering a museum/attraction or when checking-in and out of GVB public transport using the card readers.

The physical card is activated on first use – just present or scan your card on each visit. It is also used for checking-in and -out on GVB public transport.

Don’t forget – some museums/attractions require that you book a timeslot in advance online before you arrive. You can do this via the I amsterdam app or website.

What are the public transport benefits with an I amsterdam City Card?

The included transport chip card is valid for GVB public transport in the Amsterdam city area. GVB is the municipal transport company which runs Amsterdam trams, ferries, the Amsterdam metro and some buses.

The public transport ticket has the same time validity as the card – 24 to 120 hours which would normally cost between €10 and €34.

Please note, you cannot use the I amsterdam City card for travel on NS Dutch Railways or any regional buses. This means it is not valid on the airport train or airport bus 397, nor on EBS buses to Waterland and fishing villages.

It can be used on GVB bus 369 between Schiphol Airport and Amsterdam Sloterdijk station, although this journey is much longer than the train trip.

What about bike rental with the I amsterdam City card?

You get a 24 hour free bike rental with one of the following outfits: A-Bikes, AmsterBike, Discount Bike Rental, MacBike or Yellow Bikes in Amsterdam or ‘Rent & Event’ at Volendam. This would normally cost around €15.

What canal cruises and boat trips are included with the I amsterdam City Card?

You get one complimentary canal cruise from either Amsterdam Boat Cruises, Blue Boat Company (City Canal Cruise), Stromma (100 Highlights Cruise), Amsterdam Circle Line or Lovers (Romantic boat tour). This standard ticket price would be €15-€20.

You can also choose instead to take a cruise at Smidtje Canal Cruises in Haarlem.

What if I lose my I amsterdam City Card?

Unfortunately, if you lose the physical card you will not be able to get a free replacement. So take care of the card!

How can I maximise the use of the I amsterdam City Card?

Because of the current need to book some timeslots in advance, it is absolutely essential you make a plan of all the places you wish to visit with the card.

To maximise benefit of the I amsterdam card you will need to be efficient by doing as follows:

• Clustering visits of museums close to each other to avoid excessive travel. For example, Rijksmuseum, MOCO and Stedelijk museums all closely located on Museumplein. Artis Zoo, Verzetsmuseum, Hortus Botanical Gardens, the Jewish Cultural Quarter, Rembrandt House and the Maritime Museum are found in and around the Plantage district.
• Compare opening hours of museums and take advantage of ones with later opening hours. For example, MOCO (normally) stays open until 20:00 Fri-Sat; FOAM until 21:00 Thu-Fri; Huis Marseille until 2100 on Thursdays. Be aware that some museums are closed on Mondays.
• Break up a cluster of museums visits with a canal cruise or outdoor activity such as a visit to the Hortus Botanical Gardens or the A’DAM Lookout panorama deck.
• Get bonus extra hours by entering a large museum/attraction (such as the Rijksmuseum) just before the card actually expires – so always note your initial activation time carefully. It is the entry time that counts and you can stay in the museum as long as you like – even though the card will have just expired.

  

• During the validity period, focus your visits on attractions included with the I amsterdam card. If you wish to visit the Anne Frank House or Keukenhof flower gardens (both not included) then if possible do these after your card has expired, assuming you have available time.

Are there any other alternatives to the I amsterdam card?

This includes Heineken Experience, Rijksmuseum, A’DAM Lookout, MOCO Museum, Jewish Cultural Quarter and This is Holland. It also includes the Stromma 100 highlights cruise, a 1 hour pedal boat rental and bike rental.

The Go City Pass has better coverage of attractions in Amsterdam and also gives you the option of taking some interesting tours.

One big difference to the I amsterdam City Card is that Go City offers reduced child (3-12) rates for its passes – although some of the Go City attractions are not suitable for kids.

You can use the passes on your phone via the Go City app or just show the pass code (phone or print out).

Go City’s Amsterdam All Inclusive Passes and Amsterdam Explorer Passes do not include the public transport component, although you could easily combine this separately by purchasing unlimited Amsterdam GVB travel passes (1-7 days).

What about the Dutch Museumkaart?

The Museumkaart (Netherlands Museum Pass) costs €75 (€39 for children 0-18) which allows unlimited free entry into over 500 museums in the Netherlands for 12 months.

However, if you live outside of the Netherlands then buying a full Museumkaart can be a bit challenging. It can only be purchased online if you have a Dutch address and use Dutch internet banking.

There is the option of the temporary Museumkaart bought over-the-counter at certain museums for the price mentioned. However this is only valid for 31 days and offers only 5 museum visits including the one where you purchase the card.

After that the card stops working and must be registered online for the full version – which is only be sent by post to an EU address or used digitally as an app (downloadable only in the EU).

Verdict: Is the I amsterdam City Card worth it?

The I amsterdam City Card is not particularly cheap at first glance. However, considering entry to major museums and attractions in Amsterdam can now run at €15-30 each time, you can certainly make some savings on a card purchase with a well-planned and executed itinerary.

The major benefit of the card has always been the convenience of an all-in-one transport and museum/attraction pass – with a few freebies and discounts thrown in.

Having to pre-book timeslots these days is a bit of a hassle and may take some spontaneity out of your visit. Even without a card you would still have to pre-book many visits anyhow.

The loss of the Van Gogh Museum has also slightly devalued the card.

For residents/expats and frequent visitors we would probably recommend the Museumkaart as it is valid for the whole year.

For others (especially first-time visitors) we would certainly recommend the I amsterdam City Card.

Let’s consider the best value 120 hour (5 day) card which costs €140 (€28 per day). If we take away the public transport 5 day ticket price component (€34), a canal cruise (€16) and bike rental (€15) the card would effectively cost €75 which is €15 per day.

With 2-3 museum/attraction visits per day you could easily recoup the value of the I amsterdam City Card and save money.

In addition, the I Amsterdam card also gives you the opportunity to experience a broad array of Amsterdam cultural activities and create some interesting itineraries.

What canal cruises and boat trips are included with the Go City Pass?

You get a 90 minute open boat cruise around Amsterdam with Stromma which would otherwise cost €23.50.

For those inclined, the Bulldog Boat cruise (smoke-friendly, no kids) is also available.

A 1 hour Pedal Boat Amsterdam rental is also included on the card.

You can get a complimentary ride on the Amsterdam-Pampus-Muiden ferry service which allows you to visit both the Pampus fort and Muiderslot castle.

The ferry departs from Amsterdam IJburg but do check the operating hours as it runs Thu-Sun from May to August and only weekends during April, September and October.

What about bike rental with the card?

The Go City card includes a 24 hour bike rental via A-Bikes.

You can also do the Mike’s City Highlights Bike Tour which takes 2-3 hours with a live guide and bike included.

How does the Go City Pass work?

After purchase of the Go City Amsterdam All Inclusive Pass here you will be sent a confirmation link by email with an order number.

You can download the free Go City app for from the iOS App Store or Google Play. You can then ‘sync your passes’ to get your pass onto the app.

The app gives live info on attractions and tours – some require that you pre-book a timeslot and this can be done within the app.

Alternatively if you don’t want the app you can simply click the link for a pdf pass and print it out. You will get a pdf guide about the attractions and you can use the links on the Go City website to make reservations.

The pass is activated on first use – just show the QR code (which has a 12 digit confirmation code underneath) at the attraction and they will let you in. Each person must show their own pass.

If you do have any issues you can always contact Go City 24/7 through its live chat function on its website or its call centre.

Furthermore, there is a purse value associated to each pass which is the maximum useable value based on the standard admission prices. This ranges from €300-€775 for the adult all-inclusive passes.

For example, the 2 day pass it has a €450 value attached – our experience was despite visiting 7 attractions and doing 1 tour we didn’t get close to using up that value!

We had no problems at all using the pass – it was simply scanned and accepted without fuss.

You can see that we kept the pace reasonably easy – but we could have squeezed in 2-3 attractions more per day if we wanted.

Does the Go City Amsterdam All Inclusive Pass give free entry to the Anne Frank House in Amsterdam?

No, it is not possible to visit the Anne Frank House museum with any city card. If you wish to visit the Anne Frank House you must buy your tickets and book a date/timeslot well in advance directly from the museum.

Does the Pass give free entry to the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam?

No. For entrance to the Van Gogh Museum you need to buy a separate ticket and timeslot to visit the museum.

Does the Pass offer free transport around Amsterdam?

No, unlike the I Amsterdam City card, the Go City cards do not give you included transport around Amsterdam.

However you can easily buy any GVB Multi-Day Tickets online here which offer unlimited transport on GVB trams, buses and the metro. These are valid from 1-7 days on a 24 hour basis and can compliment your Go City card by helping you get around Amsterdam efficiently.

If you take a free tour with the Go City card then this would include coach transport.

How can I maximise the use of the Go City All Inclusive Pass?

It’s good to make a rough plan of all the places you wish to visit with the card. Because tours tend to take up more time you need to strike a balance between visiting attractions and going out on tours.

To maximise the Go City All Inclusive Pass here are a few tips:

• Activate your pass as early in the day as possible, as it is based on a calendar day validity (not 24 hours).
• There are a number of Go City attractions located around Museumplein square so you should try and cluster some of these together. This includes Rijksmuseum, Stedelijk, MOCO Museum, House of Bols and Royal Experience – Royal Coster Diamonds.
• A’DAM Lookout and This Is Holland are located next to each other in Amsterdam North and can be visited in succession.

• 

  Break up a cluster of museum visits with a canal cruise or outdoor activity such as a visit to the A’DAM Lookout or taking a pedal boat.

• Compare the opening hours of museums and take advantage of ones with early and later opening hours:

For example, Rijksmuseum and MOCO Museum open at 09:00.

Those which remain open until later (closing times vary depending on the day) include House of Bols (21:00 Fri-Sat), Madame Tussauds (20:00), MOCO Museum (20:00 Fri-Sat), Heineken Experience (18:45 slots Fri-Sat), A’DAM Lookout (21:00 Fri-Sun) and AMAZE (21:00 Fri-Sat). Boom Chicago shows run in the evenings.

Be aware that not every single attraction is open every day, so plan accordingly!

What about the GO City Amsterdam Explorer Pass?

The Go City: Amsterdam Explorer Pass allows you 3, 4, 5, 6 or 7 attractions to visit based on a maximum purse value of the pass. Prices are as follows:

• This option is more suitable for those having a longer stay in Amsterdam, since there is a 60 day period to use the pass.
• Only choose this pass if you plan to visit attractions with higher prices or take tours. Do not use them for lower priced attractions (eg – Houseboat Museum).
• The 5/6/7 attraction passes are the best value with cost per attraction under €16.
• Regular sales take the headline price down by 10%.

How does the Go City Pass stack-up against the I Amsterdam City Card?

The I Amsterdam City Card offers free entry to some 70 attractions in and around Amsterdam. It also includes the GVB transport tickets, a canal cruise and bike rental – plus some extra discounts on top. It also offers 5 validity options (1-5 days on a 24 hour basis).

The I Amsterdam City Card certainly has more focus on museums in the Amsterdam region giving entry to most of the main ones.

You need to look at the attraction list from both cards and see which card works for you. For some people, both cards could complement each other and you could actually purchase both – though do run them successively, not on the same days!

Is the Go City pass worth it?

We would highly recommend the Go City Amsterdam All Inclusive Pass if the attraction list appeals and you can also get out for some tours. The passes are very easy to use and because they are downloadable you don’t need to pick up physical cards.

You should be able to save 30-50% on the standard entrance fees with the Go City All Inclusive Pass. At around €42 per day, the 5 day pass offers the best value.

Amsterdam city passes offer a number of benefits including saving money on museum and attractions, the fun of putting together interesting itineraries and the sheer convenience of an all-in-one pass – meaning you don’t have to buy lots of separate tickets.

I Amsterdam City Card

In a nutshell the I Amsterdam City Card is great for ‘culture vultures’ with truly excellent coverage of museums in Amsterdam and the region.

All the main museums are included except the Anne Frank House and Van Gogh Museum – both of which are unavailable on any pass. You get a canal cruise and bike rental from a selection of operators – and a GVB public transport ticket in Amsterdam.

Although the I Amsterdam City Card does not offer a discounted option for children it includes some great children’s activities such as ARTIS Zoo, NEMO Science Museum and Fun Forest Climbing Park.

On top of the free entrance the I Amsterdam City Card offers a 25% discount into a number of venues and attractions.

This is an excellent product and because it has a 24 hour basis it is possible to run it over 2 calendar days. You can also get free extra hours by entering a museum/attraction just before the expiry time.

The Go City All Inclusive Pass has a stronger coverage of various Amsterdam attractions with exclusive arrangements with the likes of Heineken Brewery, House of Bols, Madame Tussauds and Amsterdam Dungeon.

Whilst some of the activities would perhaps appeal more to a younger crowd there is enough covered on the pass for a broader age group.

Go City has a slightly discounted children’s option though again do note some of the attractions (Heineken Experience/House of Bols/Tour de BonTon) are not suitable for kids.

The Go City pass does have the canal cruise and bike rental (no choice of operators) but NO public transport ticket. This is not a big problem as you could always buy your own GVB multi-day ticket.

What sets the Go City card apart is the option of taking various tours and excursions out of Amsterdam. Making good use of the card should easily save you 30-50% off the standard prices.

Our take: We have used both cards and we really like them both! The I Amsterdam City Card probably just shades it for us, being as you get great flexibility with 1-5 day options, have the 24 hour validity, the public transport ticket included and the great number of museums.

The Go City Amsterdam All Inclusive Pass is excellent if you are looking at some of the attractions and tours on offer which are generally priced on the higher side if done individually.

Let’s now look make a brief overview of a number of other Amsterdam passes available:

Go City Explorer Pass

The Go City: Amsterdam Explorer Pass allows you 3, 4, 5, 6 or 7 attractions to visit over a period of 60 days.

Prices are €49 (3), €64 (4), €79 (5), €94 (6) and €109 (7). The best value is the 7 attraction version at €15.57 per attraction.

The attraction list is broadly the same as that of the All Inclusive Pass, except that Amsterdam Tulip Museum/Amsterdam Pipe Museum/Heineken Experience/Murder by Dam Square/Rijksmuseum are not available on the Explorer Pass.

Only choose this pass if you plan to visit attractions with higher prices or take tours. Do not use them for lower priced attractions like the Houseboat Museum.

Museumkaart (Dutch Museum Card) – mainly for locals

The Museumkaart (Netherlands Museum Card) is an annual membership card which gives unlimited free entry into around 500 museums in the Netherlands. This includes 40 museums in Amsterdam with all the main ones covered – Anne Frank House, Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh Museum.

It costs €75 for adults and €39 for youths (13-18) and children (0-12).

Whilst this card offers outstanding value, it is not aimed at international visitors and it is a bit difficult to buy the full card. You require a Dutch bank account and Dutch address! It is a no-brainer for locals and expats.

It is possible to buy a temporary Museumkaart (€75) over-the-counter at selected museums. However the temporary card is only valid for 31 days and 5 museum visits. The museum you purchase it from counts as 1 visit.

The temporary card still offers €15 per visit, so some may still find value – especially if you are heading to other Dutch cities.

However we would probably say get a 2 day I Amsterdam City Card (€85) instead which offer the same museums in Amsterdam as well as all the extras.

It is possible to upgrade the temporary card to the full card with any EU address. You need to upload a passport-style profile photo and give a bank account (IBAN/BIC) number to pay a one-off admin fee.

The full annual card will then be sent out by standard mail to your address or you can use the digital card version (app only available in the EU).

Tiqets Amsterdam Digital Pass

The Tiqets Amsterdam Digital Pass is not really an Amsterdam city pass per se – it is a bundled package deal put together by Tiqets which costs €45-€70. It probably offers a very slight discount only to buying the separate tickets  – depending on how you value the included audio tour. It includes the following:

• Van Gogh Museum or MOCO Museum or Rembrandt House entry
• Lovers Canal Cruise or Flagship open boat cruise
• Amsterdam city audio guide or GVB public transport ticket (1-3 days)

We would highly recommend sticking to the I Amsterdam City Card or Go City passes. However if interested you can purchase the Tiqets Amsterdam Digital Pass here

Rembrandtkaart (Rembrandt Card) – for locals

The Rembrandtkaart (Rembrandt Card) is a specialist product aimed at the local Dutch market. Like the Museumkaart, it can only be purchased if you have access to a Dutch bank account.

An annual card costs €85 for adults or €125 for 2 adults. The youth (under 25) rate is €37.50.

It gives free access to 125 museums in the Netherlands including the Van Gogh Museum, Rijksmuseum and 13 others in Amsterdam. Supplements for special exhibitions are often exempted for Rembrandt Card holders.

There are also special invitational previews and activities for members as well as a magazine Bulletin (Dutch) which is sent 3 times a year.

The Museumkaart has significantly greater coverage but if the Rembrandt Card museum blue-chip portfolio appeals, then the 2 adult membership is a particularly great value alternative.

We have given an overview of 6 Amsterdam city passes. For short-term visitors we would always recommend sticking to the I amsterdam City Card (for the museums and other add-ons) or the GO City Amsterdam All-Inclusive Pass (if the attractions and tours appeal).
