Museums & Exhibitions

Rijksmuseum – Reopened in April 2013 after 10 years of renovation, the Rijksmuseum's rich collection (including Rembrandt's Night Watch) is a must-see in Amsterdam. Calder at the Rijksmuseum, freely accessible exhibition of monumental sculptures from American Alexander Calder on display in the outdoor gallery. Ends 5 Oct 2014.

StedelijkOpera at the Stedelijk – poster and costume designs from the Dutch National Opera, runs until 19 Oct 2014. Marlene Dumas: The Image as Burden – major retrospective exhibition of Dumas' work from the late 70s to the present. Runs 6 Sep 2014 to 4 Jan 2015.

Van Gogh Museum presents The World of Van Gogh: Photographs by Emmy Andriesse, an exhibition by Dutch photographer Andriesse (1914-1953) taken in Provence and Auvers-sur-Oise shortly before her death. Ends 5 Oct 2014.

Hermitage Amsterdam – New exhibition Dining with the Tsars is running 6 Sep 2014 to 1 Mar 2015.

Nieuwe Kerk Magical Africa, major international exhibition with masks and sculptures from the Ivory Coast. Opens 25 Oct 2014, runs until 15 Feb 2015. Note the Nieuwe Kerk is closed 15 Sep to 24 Oct 2014.

Anne Frank HouseThe helpers of the Secret Annexe – temporary exhibition focussing on the people who helped the Frank family go into hiding. Ends 11 Oct 2014.

Rembrandt House Brilliantly Drawn: Portraits by Johannes Thopas, exhibition of 30 drawings from the 17th century Dutch portrait artist. Ends 5 Oct 2014. Leiden Celebrates! Highlights from the academic collection of the University of Leiden, featuring 75 17th century drawings from Dutch masters. Runs 18 Oct 2014 to 28 Jan 2015.

Magna Plaza – Permanent exhibition of Rembrandt, all his paintings, lifesize reproductions of all Rembrandt's works on show.

Museum of Bags and PursesForever Vintage – vintage and retro bags dating from the 1920s up to the 1990s. Runs to 1 Feb 2015.

EYE FilmThe Hitchcock Touch – festival and exhibition on Alfred Hitchcock including film screenings, lectures and music. Runs to 24 July to 12 Oct 2014.

TCS Amsterdam Marathon – 39th edition to be held on Sunday 19 Oct 2014. Race starts and finishes at the Olympic Stadium.

Boxing:
Ben Bril Boxing Gala – Ben Bril (1912-2003) was a Jewish Dutch boxer who fought at the 1928 Olympics in Amsterdam and later survived deportation to a German concentration camp. This annual boxing and dinner show at Theater Carré is held in his memory. 13 Oct 2014.

Inline Skating:
Friday Night Skate – a 20km organised skate around the streets of Amsterdam held every Friday night (2030, weather permitting) from Vondelpark Pavilion.

Other Events in and around Amsterdam

ANNE – Major ongoing theatre production of the diary of Anne Frank covering the 2 years Anne and family spent hiding in the Secret Annex. Held at the new Theater Amsterdam, a purpose-built theatre with 11,000 seats in the Westelijke Houthavens district, just north-west of the centre. Opened in May, the play generally runs Wednesday to Sunday with shows afternoon 1400-1710 and/or evening 2000-2310. There is an onsite restaurant (Boven de Planken) serving lunch or dinner 2 1/2 hours before the show. Note, the play is performed in Dutch, however a multilingual translation system for foreign visitors using tablets should be up and running by 1 July. Tickets on sale for dates up to 30 Nov 2014.

Amsterdam Dance Event (ADE) – International conference and festival for electronic music. 15-19 Oct 2014. More than 800 artists will be performing in multiple venues.

Fiesta Cubana – DJ Arno hosts the popular monthly Cuban-style salsa night. Badcuyp Amsterdam, €5 entry, Friday 3 Oct 2014 from 10pm. For more info go here

Camera Japan – Japanese cultural festival which features film, art, music plus Japanese food. Scheduled for Oct 2014 with probable venues Kriterion and Melkweg.

Cinekid – International Film, Television and New Media Festival for Kids. Venues include Westergasfabriek and The Movies, 8-17 Oct 2014.

Cello Bienalle – World's biggest international cello festival hits Amsterdam over 16-25 Oct 2014 at the Muziekgebouw aan 't IJ & Bimhuis.

PINT Bokbier Festival – 5 Oct 2014 is scheduled for the largest beer festival in Netherlands. Try out some of the 50 types of bok beer from the tap. Venue to be announced.

Amsterdam Film Week – Best of the year's award winning films plus exclusive previews of unreleased films. Various cinemas. 27 Oct-2 Nov 2014.

Sunday Market – Sunday market with fashion, design, arts, food and kids stuff. Cultuurpark Westergasfabriek on 5 Oct 2014 (1200-1800).

De Pure Markt – Special Sunday market events (hours: 1100-1800) with a focus on selling local, seasonal and healthy produce of high quality. With music and other activities, cafe and food stalls. 12 Oct 2014 at Amstelpark; 19 Oct 2014 at Beatrixpark; 26 Oct 2014 at Park Frankandael, Amsterdam.

NeighbourFood Market – Another Sunday market event (from 1100) featuring local food products at Westergasfabriek. Date TBA.

Museum Market – Museumplein hosts this Sunday market with arts and crafts, food and music on 12 Oct 2014.

Netherlands Dance Theatre – Performance "Sleeping Beauty" at Carré, 18-19 Oct 2014.

Geelvinck Pianoforte Festival – Concert festival featuring Richard Egarr, Michael Tsalka and Bart van Oort on the historic fortepiano, 14-24 Oct 2014.

Woonbeurs – Large house and home consumer exhibition fair at Amsterdam RAI, between 30 Sep-5 Oct 2014.

Affordable Art Fair – 8th edition of the international art fair with art objects under €5,000 for sale. At Kromhouthal on the north bank of the IJ, 30 Oct-2 Nov 2014.

Pathé Met Opera – The Tuschinski cinema hosts live streaming opera from the Metropolitan in New York. Watch MacBeth (Verdi) on 11 Oct 2014 and Le Nozze Di Figaro (Mozart) on 18 Oct 2014.

Pam Ann – Australian comedienne Caroline Reed performs her cult one-woman show Plane Filthy as her alter-ego Pam Ann. On at DeLaMar Theater in Amsterdam on 14 Oct 2014.

Jimmy Carr – Comedy Central presents the English stand-up comedian at Amsterdam RAI on 19 Oct 2014.

Boom Chicago – Comedy and improv show held almost daily - now playing at Rozentheater on Rozengracht.

North Sea Jazz Club – Hosts a wide variety of jazz, funk, soul and world music every weekend (Friday & Saturday) at the Westergasfabriek. Dinner concerts include a 3 course meal by the in-house chef.

Free Concerts

Bimhuis – Jazz venue has free "Workshop + Session" every Tuesday in October at 2000.

Concertgebouw – Free lunchtime concert usually held every Wednesday at 1230.

Muziektheater – Free lunchtime concert in the foyer every Tuesday at 1230. Performed by members of Opera Studio, the Netherlands Opera or Dutch Philharmonic orchestra.

Muziekgebouw aan 't IJ – Free concert at 1230 on a Tuesday.

Westerkerk – Free lunchtime organ concert every Friday at 1300.

North Sea Jazz Club – Free jam sessions are held every Wednesday evening at the neighbouring Pizza Pazzani restaurant (at Westergasfabriek).
