Museums & Exhibitions in Amsterdam

Van Gogh Museum Munch : Van Gogh is a major exhibition of works from both Edvard Munch (1863-1944) and Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890). In collaboration with the Munch Museum in Oslo, it runs 24 Sep 2015 to 17 Jan 2016. When I Give, I Give Myself is an exhibition where 23 contemporary artists respond to letters written by Van Gogh. Runs 20 May 2015 to 17 Jan 2016.

Rijksmuseum – Reopened in April 2013 after 10 years of renovation, the Rijksmuseum's rich collection (including Rembrandt's Night Watch) is a must-see in Amsterdam. Dick Bruna - The Artist is an exhibition of dust jackets, posters, collages, drawings and of course Miffy. Runs 27 Aug to 15 Nov 2015 at the Philips Wing. Miró in the Rijksmuseum Gardens, 21 sculptures from the Spanish artist adorn the gardens 19 Jun to 11 Oct 2015. Asia in Amsterdam is an exhibition of 170 objects from China, Japan, India and Batavia - opens 17 Oct 2015 and runs until 17 Jan 2016.

Nieuwe Kerk Rome. Emperor Constantine’s Dream – major exhibition about the fascinating history of Christianity’s breakthrough in Rome under Emperor Constantine. In collaboration with the Vatican Museum, Capitoline Museum and the National Roman Museum. Opens 3 Oct 2015 and runs until 7 Feb 2016.

StedelijkZERO: Let us explore the stars is a survey of works from the ZERO avant-garde movement of the 1950s and 60s. Open 4 July to 8 Nov 2015.

Hermitage Amsterdam – Exhibition Alexander, Napoleon & Joséphine runs 28 Mar to 8 Nov 2015. Portrait Gallery of the Golden Age (opened Nov 2014) brings together for the first time 30 colossal 17th century group portraits from Amsterdam Museum and Rijksmuseum. Runs to the end of 2016.

Amsterdam MuseumGraffiti. New York meets the Dam – an exhibition dedicated to graffiti in New York and Amsterdam from the 1980s. Runs 18 Sep 2015 to  24 Jan 2016.

Tropenmuseum The Sixties, a Worldwide Happening, a cultural view of the dramatic changes all over the world during the 1960s. Runs 16 Oct 2015 to 13 Mar 2016. Secret Love, a contemporary art exhibition about the taboo surrounding LGBT identities in China. Runs until 8 May 2016.

Rembrandt House A Rich Traditionexplores printmaking in the Low Countries in the 16th and 17th centuries and Rembrandt’s role in it. Based on 80 prints from private collections. Runs 1 Oct 2015 to 24 Jan 2016.

Allard Pierson MuseumSicily and the Sea – a dive into the past, this exhibition features antiquities found on the sea bed around the Mediterranean island. Opens 9 Oct 2015, runs until 17 April 2016.

Anne Frank House - Fritz Pfeffer – Anne’s roommate is a temporary exhibition about the oldest of the 8 people which hid in the Secret Annexe. Runs 30 April to 1 Dec 2015.

EYE FilmMichelangelo Antonioni - Il maestro del cinema moderno – major exhibition devoted to the Italian director. Runs 11 Sep 2015 to 17 Jan 2016.

FOAMMagnum Contact Sheets, exhibition looking at before and after shots of iconic news photographs from 1930s to 2010, runs 11 Sep to 9 Dec 2015.

Huis Marseille Esko Männikkö/Time Flies – first major retrospective of the leading Finnish photographer, running 12 Sep to 6 Dec 2015. Hanne van der Woude/ Emmy's World, a young photographer documents 3 elderly people on a trip to the mountains in France. Runs 12 Sep to 6 Dec 2015.

Oude KerkPride Photo Award, international contest for photos about sexual and gender diversity. Runs 12 Sep to 25 Oct 2015.

Dutch Resistance MuseumNames, Not Numbers, exhibition about Dutch political prisoners in the Dachau Concentration Camp. Runs 23 April to 25 Oct 2015.

Jewish Historical MuseumRomantic Masters in The Hague: Rediscovering the Verveer Brothers, exhibition about the first successful Jewish artists in the Netherlands. Runs 3 July to 1 Nov 2015. After the War was Over, photo exhibition of Jewish Amsterdam in the 1950s showing the recovery of Jewish life post-war. Opens 30 Oct 2015, runs to 14 Feb 2016.

Museum Van LoonBachelor's Delight digital installation from Dutch artist Jasmijn Visser about the world view of a 17th century Dutchman. Running 2 Oct to 8 Nov 2015. Van de Poll at Van Loon, highlights of one of the finest portrait collections in the Netherlands, runs 9 Oct 2015 to 10 Jan 2016.

Museum of Bags and PursesBlack and White: The Dresscode of a Lifetime, follows the use of black and white colours in bags from the 18th century to the present. Runs 3 Aug 2015 to 3 Jan 2016.

StadsarchiefBetween Sickness and Health, stories from the Emma Children's Hospital 1865-2015. Runs 27 Aug to 15 Nov 2015.

De AppelGerlach en Koop: Choses tuées, the first institutional solo exhibition from the collective artist. Running 12 Sep to 8 Nov 2015.

Andenken GalleryEvan Hecox: Terrain, small exhibition from the Colorado-based artist. Running 2-18 Oct 2015.

Body Worlds – Display of human body plastinate specimens at the new permanent venue on Damrak. The exhibition focuses on happiness.

TCS Amsterdam Marathon – 40th edition to be held on Sunday 18 Oct 2015. Race starts and finishes at the Olympic Stadium.

Ben Bril Boxing Gala – Ben Bril (1912-2003) was a Jewish Dutch boxer who fought at the 1928 Olympics in Amsterdam and later survived deportation to a German concentration camp. This annual boxing and dinner show at Theater Carré is held in his memory. 9th edition scheduled for Monday 12 Oct 2015.

Grachtenrace – Up to 140 sloop boats race over a 23km course around Amsterdam's canals. The race starts near Jan Schaeferbrug (bridge) at IJhaven and the route takes in various canals including Herengracht, Leidsegracht and Singelsgracht. The finish is at Oosterdok by the Maritime Museum. 29th edition is on Saturday 10 Oct 2015.

European Championships (Women) – 16 countries in action at Ahoy Rotterdam, 30 Sep to 4 Oct 2015.

Friday Night Skate
– a 20km organised skate around the streets of Amsterdam held every Friday night (2030, weather permitting) from Vondelpark Pavilion.

I Am Not A Tourist – International's fair organised by Expatica. Varied programme from job hunting, self-development and expat life. Beurs van Berlage, Sunday 4 Oct 2015 1000-1700.

Camera Japan – Japanese cultural festival which features film, art, music plus Japanese food. Scheduled for 2-4 Oct 2015 with main venues Kriterion and Melkweg.

Fiesta Cubana – DJ Arno hosts the popular monthly Cuban-style salsa night. At Het Mirror Center (near Muiderpoort Station), €5 entry, Friday 2 Oct 2015 from 10pm. For more info go here

Driving North – Drive-in movie festival with outdoor cinema at Papaverweg, NDSM wharf Amsterdam. Runs  1-11 Oct 2015.

Amsterdam Dance Event (ADE) – International conference and festival for electronic music. 14-18 Oct 2015. More than 2,200 artists will be performing at 350 events in multiple venues.

Cinekid – International Film, Television and New Media Festival for Kids. Venues include Westergasfabriek and The Movies, 17-23 Oct 2015.

PINT Bokbier Festival – The largest beer festival in Netherlands where you can try out some of the 90 types of bok beer from the tap. 38th edition will be at Beurs van Berlage 23-25 Oct 2015.

Cello Bienalle – World's biggest international cello festival takes a break for 2015 but will return in Amsterdam over 21-29 Oct 2016. There will be a sneak preview show on 31 Oct 2015.

KLIK! Amsterdam animation festival runs at the EYE Film Institute, 27 Oct-1 Nov 2015.

London Calling – Twice-yearly indie pop music festival showcasing the latest UK talent. Held at Amsterdam's Paradiso on 30-31 Oct 2015.

Netherlands Reisopera – Performance "Madame Butterfly" at Carré, 8/10 Oct 2015.

Geelvinck Pianoforte Festival – Concert festival featuring the likes of Mozart, Beethoven and Schubert played on the historic fortepiano. Runs 8-25 Oct 2015.

Wonen & Design Beurs – Large house and home consumer exhibition fair at Amsterdam RAI, between 29 Sep-4 Oct 2015.

Affordable Art Fair – 9th edition of the international art fair with art objects under €5,000 for sale. At Kromhouthal on the north bank of the IJ, 29 Oct-1 Nov 2015.

Toneelgroep Amsterdam – Amsterdam's renowned theatre company gives shows with English surtitles on Thursday evenings at the Stadsschouwburg theatre.  The Hidden Force (De Stille Kracht) is a play about colonial Dutch Indies - will be performed on 8 Oct 2015 at 2000. Medea is an adaptation of the Greek tragedy, directed by noted Australian actor, writer and director Simon Stone - performed on Thursday 15 Oct 2015 at 2030.

Dutch National Ballet – Performs Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe between 11 Sep and 30 Oct 2015. Also performs Giselle on various dates between 13 Oct and 15 Nov 2015. Muziektheater Amsterdam.

Pathé Met Opera – The Tuschinski cinema hosts live streaming opera from the Metropolitan in New York. Watch Il Trovatore (Verdi) on 3 Oct 2015, Otello (Verdi) on 17 Oct 2015 and Tannhäuser (Wagner) on 31 Oct 2015.

The 39 Steps... I counted them! – Parody by comedy actor Peter Wear, based on the famous novel. At Badhuistheater 23/24 Oct 2015 at 8.15pm.

Boom Chicago – Comedy and improv show held almost daily - now playing at Rozentheater on Rozengracht.

North Sea Jazz Club – Hosts a wide variety of jazz, funk, soul and world music every weekend (Friday & Saturday) at the Westergasfabriek. Dinner concerts include a 3 course meal by the in-house chef.

ANNE – Major ongoing theatre production of the diary of Anne Frank covering the 2 years Anne and family spent hiding in the Secret Annex. Held at the new Theater Amsterdam, a purpose-built theatre with 11,000 seats in the Westelijke Houthavens district, just north-west of the centre. Opened in May 2014, the play generally runs Wednesday to Sunday with shows afternoon 1400-1710 and/or evening 2000-2310. There is an onsite restaurant (Boven de Planken) serving lunch or dinner 2 1/2 hours before the show. Note, the play is performed in Dutch, however there is a multilingual translation system for foreign visitors using tablets. Tickets on sale for dates up to the end of December 2015.

Bimhuis – Jazz venue has free Workshop & Session every Tuesday in October at 2000. Monday Match Dance & Music Impro Lab on 5 Oct 2015.

Concertgebouw – Free lunchtime concert generally every Wednesday at 1230.

Muziektheater – Free lunchtime concert in the foyer every Tuesday at 1230. Performed by members of Opera Studio, the Netherlands Opera or Dutch Philharmonic orchestra.

Muziekgebouw aan 't IJ – Free monthly concert showcasing young classical talent - to be held on Thursday 15 Oct 2015 at 1230.

North Sea Jazz Club – Free jam sessions are held every Thursday evening at the neighbouring Pizza Pazzani restaurant (at Westergasfabriek).
