Museums & Exhibitions in Amsterdam

Rijksmuseum – Reopened in April 2013 after 10 years of renovation, the Rijksmuseum's rich collection (including Rembrandt's Night Watch) is a must-see in Amsterdam. Maelwael. Painter at the Burgundian Court c. 1400, major exhibition of one of the founders of Dutch painting Johan Maelwael (Jean Malouel). Runs 6 Oct 2017 to 7 Jan 2018 at the Philips Wing. Dubuffet in the Rijksmuseum Gardens, twelve monumental sculptures by the French artist Jean Dubuffet will be on display 1 Jul to 1 Oct 2017.

Van Gogh Museum The Dutch in Paris is an exhibition about the attractiveness of Paris to 19th century Dutch artists such as Jan Sluyters, Kees van Dongen, Piet Mondrian and Vincent van Gogh. Runs 13 Oct 2017 to 7 Jan 2018.

Hermitage Amsterdam – New exhibition Dutch Masters opens 7 Oct 2017 and runs until 27 May 2018. Also at the Hermitage: Outsider Art Museum includes world-class art works by Dutch and international outsider artists; and permanent exhibition Portrait Gallery of the Golden Age.

StedelijkEdward Krasinski, first retrospective exhibition in the Netherlands of the avant-garde East European artist featuring sculptures and installations. Running 24 Jun to 15 Oct 2017. Jana Euler, High in Amsterdam, The Sky of Amsterdam exhibition of the contemporary German abstract artist inspired by the digital age. Runs 20 May to 15 Oct 2017. De Stijl and Metz & Co, members of artistic movement De Stijl created furniture, interior textiles, packaging and design items for the Amsterdam department store Metz & Co. Exhibition runs 14 Oct 2017 until 28 Jan 2018.

MOCO Museum – This new modern and contemporary art museum on Museumplein. Banksy: Laugh Now (includes Beanfield) and Dalí: Genius have extended runs until 31 Oct 2017.

Amsterdam MuseumGovert Flinck & Ferdinand Bol, a comprehensive retrospective exhibition of the 17th century painters. In collaboration with Rembrandt House museum. Runs 13 Oct 2017 to 18 Feb 2018.

National Maritime MuseumThe World According to Blaeu, Joan Blaeu's large map of the world (1648) will be on view 14 Apr until 31 Dec 2017.

Tropenmuseum Rhythm & Roots - from blues to hip hop, a journey of musical styles which have roots in Africa. Runs until 7 Jan 2018. Aleppo, before and after exhibition about the war-torn Syrian city, running 20 Apr to 31 Dec 2017.

Huis Marseille Landscape with Tree/ by Jamie Hakesworth, photo exhibition from the British analogue photographer runs 9 Sep to 3 Dec 2017.

FOAMAndré Kertész – The Double of a Life, retrospective exhibition of the Hungarian avant-garde photographer, runs 15 Sep to 6 Dec 2017.

National Holocaust Museum – The newly opened museum presents Tangible Memories from the Jewish Monument, exhibition of objects, photos and documents of people affected by the Holocaust. Opened 2 Sep 2016, ongoing until end 2019.

Jewish Historical MuseumThe Jewish Jukebox, a musical journey featuring 100 years of popular Jewish artists. Runs 30 Jun 2017 to 7 Jan 2018. Charlotte Salomon, exhibition of gouaches from the young Jewish artist who died during World War 2. Runs 20 Oct 2017 to 25 Mar 2018.

EYE FilmApichatpong Weerasethakul, exhibition of the Thai film director runs 16 Sep to 3 Dec 2017.

Van Loon MuseumFerdinand Bol, exhibition of 25 paintings from the 17th century Dutch Master who was the first resident of the house. Runs 6 Oct 2017 to 8 Jan 2018 at the museum coach house.

ARCAM – ARCAM presents a crash course (€7.50) on Amsterdam architecture and urbanism every Friday 1330-1415.

Body Worlds – Display of human body plastinate specimens at the permanent venue on Damrak. The exhibition focuses on happiness.

TCS Amsterdam Marathon – 42nd edition to be held on Sunday 15 Oct 2017. Race starts and finishes at the Olympic Stadium.

Amsterdam City Walk – 11, 18, 26 and 33 km walking events held the day before the Amsterdam marathon taking in the highlights of the city. Saturday 14 Oct 2017, the longer walks start from the Olympic Stadium.

Friday Night Run – a free monthly 1 hour run organised by running group Phanos. Meet at Olympic Stadium Amsterdam at 1930 on Friday 13 Oct 2017.

Ben Bril Boxing Gala – Ben Bril (1912-2003) was a Jewish Dutch boxer who fought at the 1928 Olympics in Amsterdam and later survived deportation to a German concentration camp. This annual boxing and dinner show at Theater Carré is held in his memory. 11th anniversary edition due to be held 16 Oct 2017.

Grachtenrace – Up to 140 sloop boats race over a 22km course around Amsterdam's canals. The race starts near Jan Schaeferbrug (bridge) at IJhaven and the route takes in various canals including Herengracht, Leidsegracht and Singelsgracht. The finish is at Oosterdok by the Maritime Museum. 31st edition is on Saturday 7 Oct 2017.

Friday Night Skate
– a 20km organised skate around the streets of Amsterdam held every Friday night (2030, weather permitting) from Vondelpark Pavilion.

Camera Japan – Japanese cultural festival which features film, art, music plus Japanese food. Scheduled for 29 Sep to 1 Oct 2017.

Fiesta Cubana – DJ Arno hosts the popular monthly Cuban-style salsa night. At Het Mirror Center (near Muiderpoort Station), €7 entry, Friday 6 Oct 2017 from 10pm.

Amsterdam Dance Event (ADE) – International conference and festival for electronic music. 18-22 Oct 2017. More than 2,000 artists will be performing in 450+ events at multiple venues.

Cinekid – International Film, Television and New Media Festival for Kids. Venues include Westergasfabriek and The Movies, 15-21 Oct 2017, professionals event 24-27 Oct 2017.

PINT Bokbier Festival – The largest beer festival in Netherlands where you can try out some of the 90 types of bok beer from the tap. 40th edition will be at Beurs van Berlage Amsterdam 27-29 Oct 2017.

KLIK! KLIK Amsterdam animation festival runs at the EYE Film Institute, 17-22 Oct 2017.

VT Wonen & Design Beurs – Large house and home consumer exhibition fair at Amsterdam RAI, between 3-8 Oct 2017.

Hans Klok The Dutch magician plays Theater Carré with his show House of Horror, 18-22 Oct 2017.

Riverdance 21st anniversary of the Irish dance show spectacular on 9 Oct 2017 at Theater Carré.

Boom Chicago – Comedy and improv show held Wed - Sat and playing at Rozentheater on Rozengracht.

3D Print Canal House – See a canal house being constructed using 3D printing techniques and sustainable materials. The location is Asterweg 49, 1031 HM Amsterdam - get the free ferry across to Amsterdam North and walk beyond EYE Film. Visit by appointment only or take the walk-in tour (€7.50) which runs every first Wednesday of the month at 1500.

Bimhuis – Jazz venue has free Workshop & Session every Tuesday in October at 2000.

Concertgebouw – Free lunchtime classical concerts held every Wednesday at 1230.

De Hallen – Free monthly choir concert in the passageway of De Hallen, Sunday 1 Oct 2017 at 1600.

Dutch Opera & Ballet – Free lunchtime concert in the foyer every Tuesday at 1230. Performed by members of Opera Studio, the Netherlands Opera or Dutch Philharmonic orchestra.
