Museums & Exhibitions in Amsterdam

Rijksmuseum – Reopened in April 2013 after 10 years of renovation, the Rijksmuseum's rich collection (including Rembrandt's Night Watch) is a must-see in Amsterdam. Hercules Segers Wonderland is an exhibition of paintings from the intriguing Golden Age artist from the Rijksmuseum collection. Frans Post: Artist in the Tropics, exhibition of the Dutch artist who travelled to Brazil in the 17th century. Both running 7 Oct 2016 to 8 Jan 2017.

Van Gogh Museum Daubigny, Monet, Van Gogh: Impressions of Landscape is an exhibition which shows the interconnections between Daubigny and the Impressionists. Runs 21 Oct 2016 to 29 jan 2017.

Hermitage Amsterdam – Exhibition Catherine The Great expected to run 18 June 2016 until 15 Jan 2017. Portrait Gallery of the Golden Age brings together for the first time 30 colossal 17th century group portraits from Amsterdam Museum and Rijksmuseum. Runs to the end of 2016.

StedelijkAvery Singer - Scenes, solo exhibition of the American artist with works from 2012, runs 23 April to 2 Oct 2016. Jean Tinguely, overview of work from the Swiss artist known for his kinetic art. Runs 1 Oct 2016 to 5 Mar 2017.

Tropenmuseum Rhythm & Roots - from blues to hip hop, a journey of musical styles which have roots in Africa. Runs until 13 May to 30 Oct 2016.

Nieuwe Kerk – Major biographical exhibition Marilyn Monroe: Reflecting on a Female Icon, celebrating her life and what would have been her 90th birthday. Opens 1 Oct 2016 and will run until 5 Feb 2017.

National Holocaust Museum – The newly opened museum presents its first exhibition: The Demise of Abraham Reiss, a series of 9 harrowing paintings by noted Dutch actor and artist Jeroen Krabbé about the life and death of his grandfather. Runs 16 May to 2 Oct 2016.

Jewish Historical MuseumEarly Soviet Photography and Film, exhibition running 24 July to 27 Nov 2016. Vatican - Ets Haim, Hebrew manuscripts from the Vatican and Ets Haim Library, runs 19 Sep 2016 until 3 Jan 2017.

Lloyd HotelEmigrants at Lloyd Hotel, exhibition on 4th floor about migrants departing Amsterdam nearly 100 years ago. The Lloyd Hotel and surrounding shipping buildings facilitated East European emigrants as they departed to south America. Free entry, runs to end 2016.

Body Worlds – Display of human body plastinate specimens at the new permanent venue on Damrak. The exhibition focuses on happiness.

TCS Amsterdam Marathon – 41st edition to be held on Sunday 16 Oct 2016. Race starts and finishes at the Olympic Stadium.

Ben Bril Boxing Gala – Ben Bril (1912-2003) was a Jewish Dutch boxer who fought at the 1928 Olympics in Amsterdam and later survived deportation to a German concentration camp. This annual boxing and dinner show at Theater Carré is held in his memory. 10th anniversary edition to be held 17 October 2016 from 19:00.

Grachtenrace – Up to 140 sloop boats race over a 23km course around Amsterdam's canals. The race starts near Jan Schaeferbrug (bridge) at IJhaven and the route takes in various canals including Herengracht, Leidsegracht and Singelsgracht. The finish is at Oosterdok by the Maritime Museum. 30th edition is on Saturday 8 Oct 2016.

Inline Skating:
Friday Night Skate
– a 20km organised skate around the streets of Amsterdam held every Friday night (2030, weather permitting) from Vondelpark Pavilion.

I Am Not A Tourist – International's fair organised by Expatica. Varied programme from job hunting, self-development and expat life. Beurs van Berlage, Sunday 2 October 2016 1000-1700.

Camera Japan – Japanese cultural festival which features film, art, music plus Japanese food. Scheduled for 14-16 October 2016 with main venues Kriterion and Melkweg.

Fiesta Cubana – DJ Arno hosts the popular monthly Cuban-style salsa night. At Het Mirror Center (near Muiderpoort Station), €7 entry, Friday 7 October 2016 from 10pm.

Driving North – Drive-in movie festival with outdoor cinema at Papaverweg, NDSM wharf Amsterdam. Dates TBA.

Amsterdam Dance Event (ADE) – International conference and festival for electronic music. 19-23 October 2016. More than 2,000 artists will be performing in 450+ events at multiple venues.

Cinekid – International Film, Television and New Media Festival for Kids. Venues include Westergasfabriek and The Movies, 13-28 October 2016.

PINT Bokbier Festival – The largest beer festival in Netherlands where you can try out some of the 90 types of bok beer from the tap. 39th edition will be at Beurs van Berlage 28-30 October 2016.

Cello Bienalle – World's biggest international cello festival returns to Amsterdam over 21-29 October 2016.

KLIK! Amsterdam animation festival runs at the EYE Film Institute, 25-30 October 2016.

Wonen & Design Beurs – Large house and home consumer exhibition fair at Amsterdam RAI, between 27 September-2 October 2016.

Affordable Art Fair – 10th edition of the international art fair with art objects under €6,000 for sale. At Kromhouthal on the north bank of the IJ, 27-30 October 2016.

Dutch National Opera & BalletLa Bayadère (ballet) on 8-15 October 2016. Opera Manon Lescaut (Puccini) is on various dates 10-31 October 2016.

Pathé Met Opera – The Tuschinski cinema hosts live streaming opera from the Metropolitan in New York. 2016/17 dates TBA.

Boom Chicago – Comedy and improv show held almost daily - now playing at Rozentheater on Rozengracht.

North Sea Jazz Club – Hosts a wide variety of jazz, funk, soul and world music every weekend (Friday & Saturday) at the Westergasfabriek. Dinner concerts include a 3 course meal by the in-house chef.

Free Concerts

Bimhuis – Jazz venue has free Workshop & Session every Tuesday in October at 2000.

Concertgebouw – Free lunchtime concert generally every Wednesday at 1230.

Dutch Opera & Ballet – Free lunchtime concert in the foyer every Tuesday at 1230. Performed by members of Opera Studio, the Netherlands Opera or Dutch Philharmonic orchestra.

Muziekgebouw aan 't IJ – Free monthly concert showcasing young classical talent - to be held Thursday 6 October 2016 at 12:30.
