Museums & Exhibitions in Amsterdam

Micropia – Amsterdam's newest museum opens its doors to the public on 1 Oct 2014. Located in the Ledenlokalen (1870) at Artis, Micropia features unique interactive displays of micro-organisms.

Rijksmuseum – Reopened in April 2013 after 10 years of renovation, the Rijksmuseum's rich collection (including Rembrandt's Night Watch) is a must-see in Amsterdam. Calder at the Rijksmuseum, freely accessible exhibition of monumental sculptures from American Alexander Calder on display in the outdoor gallery. Ends 5 Oct 2014.

StedelijkOpera at the Stedelijk – poster and costume designs from the Dutch National Opera, runs until 19 Oct 2014. Marlene Dumas: The Image as Burden – major retrospective exhibition of Dumas' work from the late 70s to the present. Runs 6 Sep 2014 to 4 Jan 2015.

Van Gogh Museum presents The World of Van Gogh: Photographs by Emmy Andriesse, an exhibition by Dutch photographer Andriesse (1914-1953) taken in Provence and Auvers-sur-Oise shortly before her death. Ends 5 Oct 2014.

Hermitage Amsterdam – New exhibition Dining with the Tsars is running 6 Sep 2014 to 1 Mar 2015.

Nieuwe Kerk Magical Africa, major international exhibition with masks and sculptures from the Ivory Coast. Opens 25 Oct 2014, runs until 15 Feb 2015. Note the Nieuwe Kerk is closed between 15 Sep and 24 Oct 2014.

Allard Pierson MuseumKeys To Rome, a unique exhibition on Roman culture using immersive digital technology running concurrently in 4 cities – Rome, Alexandria, Amsterdam and Sarajevo. The Allard Pierson museum hosts the Amsterdam exhibition with a focus on 3 regions - Egypt , the Mediterranean and the Low Countries. Running 24 Sep 2014 to 15 Mar 2015.

Amsterdam MuseumFootball Hallelujah! – an interactive exhibition looking at football as the new religion, from heroes to rituals, faith and superstition. Running 12 Sep 2014 to 4 Jan 2015. For more see here

Anne Frank HouseThe helpers of the Secret Annexe – temporary exhibition focussing on the people who helped the Frank family go into hiding. Runs to April 2015. Note, Anne Frank house is closed on 4 Oct 2014 (Yom Kippur).

Rembrandt House Brilliantly Drawn: Portraits by Johannes Thopas, exhibition of 30 drawings from the 17th century Dutch portrait artist. Ends 5 Oct 2014. Leiden Celebrates! Highlights from the academic collection of the University of Leiden, featuring 75 17th century drawings from Dutch masters. Runs 17 Oct 2014 to 25 Jan 2015.

Tropenmuseum Masters of Photography - Icons of National Geographic – Photo exhibition featuring the best of National Geographic magazine. Extended run 19 Jul to 2 Nov 2014; Soulmade. Jasper Krabbé meets Tropenmuseum – Dutch Visual artist Jasper Krabbé creates his ideal house inspired by objects from the Tropenmuseum collection. Open 13 Sep 2014 to 25 Jan 2015.

Oude Kerk Pride Photo Award 2014 is a photo exhibition about sexual and gender diversity. Runs 30 Aug to 26 Oct 2014.

FOAMJH Engström - Close Surrounding exhibition from the Swedish photographer exposes the loneliness and the absurdity of the human condition. Runs 12 Sep 2014 – 10 Dec 2014. Daniel Gordon - Shadows, Patterns, Pears colourful exhibition of still lifes and portraits from this young American photographer. Runs 12 Sep – 2 Nov 2014.

Huis Marseille The Marseillaise(s) / fifteen years of collecting, exhibition curated by 5 international photographers closely associated with Huis Marseille over the last 15 years. Runs 13 Sep 2014 to 7 Dec 2014.

Beurs van BerlageVan Gogh the Ultimate Collection – 200 works of Van Gogh are recreated for display including special 3D animations. Runs until 14 Dec 2014.

Amsterdam ExpoThe Art of the Brick – internationally renowned exhibition featuring large-scale sculptures made from Lego bricks comes to Amsterdam. Extended run 29 May to 26 Oct 2014.

Magna Plaza – Permanent exhibition of Rembrandt, all his paintings, lifesize reproductions of all Rembrandt's works on show.

Body Worlds – Display of human body plastinate specimens at the new permanent venue on Damrak. The exhibition focuses on happiness.

StadsarchiefBreitner in Amsterdam, exhibition at the City Archives of G.H. Breitner (1857-1923) with sketches, watercolours and paintings of Amsterdam life. Runs 10 Oct 2014 to 1 Feb 2015.

OosterkerkPeriphery, exhibition of oil paintings from the late Amsterdam artist Nico Bakker (1957-2012). Running 5 Oct to 2 Nov 2014.

Museum of Bags and PursesForever Vintage – vintage and retro bags dating from the 1920s up to the 1990s. Runs 15 Sep 2014 to 1 Mar 2015.

Geelvinck Hinlopen HouseEntertainment from the Canals exhibition at the grand canal house looking at how the upper middle classes from the 17th, 18th and early 19th centuries entertained themselves – from hunting and sports, to collectibles, dollshouses and board games. Running 4 July 2014 to 13 Jan 2015.

Museum Van LoonAdriaan de Lelie and the 18th century family portrait see lavish 18th century family portrait paintings by Dutch artist Adriaan de Lelie (1755-1820). Running 17 Oct 2014 to 19 Jan 2015.

Jewish Historical MuseumMasterpieces from the Howard Greenberg Collection, photo exhibition from the collection of the New York gallery owner. Running 11 Sep 2014 to 11 Jan 2015. Sam Waagenaar – Jews on Djerba, unique photos from the ancient Jewish community on the Tunisian island. Running 10 Sep 2014 to 11 Jan 2015.

EYE FilmThe Hitchcock Touch – festival and exhibition on Alfred Hitchcock including film screenings, lectures and music. Runs to 24 July to 12 Oct 2014. Anthony McCall Solid Light Films – exhibition from the British artist who specialises in large-scale light-projection installations. Runs 28 Sep to 30 Nov 2014.

TolhuistuinCostume Bureau, exhibition featuring an array of working costumes from the collection of Museum het Domein in Sittard. Runs 10 Oct to 27 Nov 2014 at the new Amsterdam Noord venue.

Cobra MuseumThe Hidden Picture, the ING art collection featuring 70 modern art works is on show from 12 Sep 2014 to 4 Jan 2015. Traces – 100 Years Asger Jorn, exhibition marking 100 years since the birth of Asger Jorn (1914-1973), one of the founders of the Cobra art movement. Runs 28 Sep 2014 to 18 Jan 2015.

Museum Jan van der TogtExploring KLM’s 95-Year Journey, exhibition about the rich history of the iconic Dutch airline featuring photographs, posters and dinnerware. Runs 19 Sep to 12 Oct 2014. Note, the museum is in Amstelveen, open Wed-Sun.

Athletics:
TCS Amsterdam Marathon – 39th edition to be held on Sunday 19 Oct 2014. Race starts and finishes at the Olympic Stadium.

Boxing:
Ben Bril Boxing Gala – Ben Bril (1912-2003) was a Jewish Dutch boxer who fought at the 1928 Olympics in Amsterdam and later survived deportation to a German concentration camp. This annual boxing and dinner show at Theater Carré is held in his memory. 13 Oct 2014.

Rowing:
Grachtenrace – Up to 140 sloop boats race over a 23km course around Amsterdam's canals. The race starts near Jan Schaeferbrug (bridge) at IJhaven and the route takes in various canals including Herengracht, Leidsegracht and Singelsgracht. The finish is at Oosterdok by the Maritime Museum. 28th edition is on Saturday 11 Oct 2014, start 1100-1300.

Inline Skating:
Friday Night Skate – a 20km organised skate around the streets of Amsterdam held every Friday night (2030, weather permitting) from Vondelpark Pavilion.

Other Events in and around Amsterdam

ANNE – Major ongoing theatre production of the diary of Anne Frank covering the 2 years Anne and family spent hiding in the Secret Annex. Held at the new Theater Amsterdam, a purpose-built theatre with 11,000 seats in the Westelijke Houthavens district, just north-west of the centre. Opened in May, the play generally runs Wednesday to Sunday with shows afternoon 1400-1710 and/or evening 2000-2310. There is an onsite restaurant (Boven de Planken) serving lunch or dinner 2 1/2 hours before the show. Note, the play is performed in Dutch, however there is a multilingual translation system for foreign visitors using tablets. Tickets on sale for dates up to 31 Jan 2015.

Hamlet vs Hamlet – Toneelgroep Amsterdam presents an award winning adaptation of the Shakespeare play by Tom Lanoye, directed by Guy Cassiers. This season Tonnelgroep is offering live English surtitles for performances every Thursday - Hamlet vs Hamlet with English surtitles is on 2 Oct 2014 at Stadsschouwburg.

Amsterdam Dance Event (ADE) – International conference and festival for electronic music. 15-19 Oct 2014. More than 800 artists will be performing in multiple venues.

Fiesta Cubana – DJ Arno hosts the popular monthly Cuban-style salsa night. Badcuyp Amsterdam, €5 entry, Friday 3 Oct 2014 from 10pm. For more info go here

Camera Japan – Japanese cultural festival which features film, art, music plus Japanese food. Scheduled for 10-12 Oct 2014 with main venues Kriterion and Melkweg.

Cinekid – International Film, Television and New Media Festival for Kids. Venues include Westergasfabriek and The Movies, 8-17 Oct 2014.

Cello Bienalle – World's biggest international cello festival hits Amsterdam over 16-25 Oct 2014 at the Muziekgebouw aan 't IJ & Bimhuis.

PINT Bokbier Festival – The largest beer festival in Netherlands where you can try out some of the 50 types of bok beer from the tap. Beurs van Berlage 24-26 Oct 2014.

Amsterdam Film Week – Best of the year's award winning films plus exclusive previews of unreleased films. Various cinemas. 27 Oct-2 Nov 2014.

Netherlands Dance Theatre – Performance "Sleeping Beauty" at Carré, 18-19 Oct 2014.

Geelvinck Pianoforte Festival – Concert festival featuring the likes of Mozart, Beethoven and Schubert played on the historic fortepiano. Runs 9-25 Oct 2014.

Dylan Thomas Festival – Celebrating 100 years since the birth of noted Welsh poet Dylan Thomas, Badhuistheater in Amsterdam hosts a festival which will include Under Milk Wood plus music, movies and poetry. Runs 26-27 Oct 2014.

Woonbeurs – Large house and home consumer exhibition fair at Amsterdam RAI, between 30 Sep-5 Oct 2014.

Affordable Art Fair – 8th edition of the international art fair with art objects under €5,000 for sale. At Kromhouthal on the north bank of the IJ, 30 Oct-2 Nov 2014.

Pathé Met Opera – The Tuschinski cinema hosts live streaming opera from the Metropolitan in New York. Watch MacBeth (Verdi) on 11 Oct 2014 and Le Nozze Di Figaro (Mozart) on 18 Oct 2014.

Pam Ann – Australian comedienne Caroline Reed performs her cult one-woman show Plane Filthy as her alter-ego Pam Ann. On at DeLaMar Theater in Amsterdam on 14 Oct 2014.

Jimmy Carr – Comedy Central presents the English stand-up comedian in his show Gagging Order at Amsterdam RAI on 19 Oct 2014.

John Cleese – The legendary English writer-comedian presents his autobiographical one-man show at Theater Carré in Amsterdam on 21 Oct 2014.

Boom Chicago – Comedy and improv show held almost daily - now playing at Rozentheater on Rozengracht.

North Sea Jazz Club – Hosts a wide variety of jazz, funk, soul and world music every weekend (Friday & Saturday) at the Westergasfabriek. Dinner concerts include a 3 course meal by the in-house chef.

Free Concerts

Bimhuis – Jazz venue has free Workshop & Session every Tuesday in October at 2000. Monday Match Dance & Music Impro Lab on 13 Oct 2014. Cello Bienalle free lunch concert by international conservatorium students at 1230 on 20/21/23 Oct 2014.

Concertgebouw – Free lunchtime concert generally every Wednesday at 1230, though note some changes this month: Thu 2 Oct, Wed 8/15/22 Oct and Tue 28 Oct 2014.

Muziektheater – Free lunchtime concert in the foyer every Tuesday at 1230. Performed by members of Opera Studio, the Netherlands Opera or Dutch Philharmonic orchestra.

North Sea Jazz Club – Free jam sessions are held every Thursday evening at the neighbouring Pizza Pazzani restaurant (at Westergasfabriek).
