What's On in Amsterdam March 2018

Museums & Exhibitions in Amsterdam
Rijksmuseum – Reopened in April 2013 after 10 years of renovation, the Rijksmuseum's rich collection (including Rembrandt's Night Watch) is a must-see in Amsterdam. High Society, exhibition with 35 life-size portraits by great masters of art history. 8 Mar to 3 Jun 2018. A Journey to 18th century Canton, paintings of the Chinese city. At the Asian Pavilion 8 Nov 2017 to 27 May 2018.
Van Gogh Museum – Popular museum with the world's largest collection of Vincent van Gogh paintings. Van Gogh & Japan, exhibition on how Vincent Van Gogh was inspired by Japanese prints. 23 Mar to 24 Jun 2018.
Beurs van Berlage - My Name Is Prince, official retrospective exhibition of the legendary pop superstar. It includes hundreds of items from the late singer's private estate in Minnesota. 8 Mar to 8 Jun 2018.
Anne Frank House - The canal house on Amsterdam's Prinsengracht canal where Anne Frank wrote her famous teenage wartime diary whilst hiding from German occupation. The house and museum is open to visitors though pre-booking is highly recommended.
Hermitage Amsterdam – Showcases an exhibition every 6 months from the vast collection of the grand State Hermitage in St Petersburg, Russia. Exhibition Dutch Masters runs between 7 Oct 2017 and 27 May 2018. Also ongoing at the Hermitage: Panorama Amsterdam. City Time Lapse, a visual projection of Amsterdam through the ages as seen from the Amstel river; and Portrait Gallery of the Golden Age.
Outsider Art Museum – This museum at the Hermitage showcases extraordinary art by unconventional artists who have not been formally trained. New Masters introduces more than 70 works by 30 talented contemporary Outsider artists. This also includes Poignant Portraits by Dutch photographer Sander Troelstra who puts a face to these artists. Runs 4 Oct 2017 to 28 May 2018.
Nieuwe Kerk – Masterpiece 2018 features an important single work of religious art. This year Gazing Ball by Jeff Koons can be seen 17 Feb to 8 Apr 2018.
Stedelijk – Amsterdam's main modern and contemporary art museum. Jump into the Future, Art from the 90's and 2000's, exhibition of contemporary art gifted by German collector Thomas Borgmann, runs 26 Nov 2017 to 8 Apr 2018. I Am a Native Foreigner exhibition explores different aspects of the migration theme. Runs 23 Sep 2017 to 2 Jun 2018. Canopy Keith Haring Returns to the Stedelijk, the restored velum canopy by the American graffiti artist is on display above the grand staircase. 12 Oct 2017 to 3 Jun 2018. Freedom is Recognized Necessity, exhibition of art from the former Soviet Republics and satellite states, runs 3 Mar to 12 Aug 2018.
Amsterdam Museum – Paradiso 50 Years, exhibition about the iconic music venue in Amsterdam which has hosted many noted artists and bands. Runs 30 Mar to 19 Aug 2018.
Rembrandt House – Rembrandt Observes People, features 24 etchings by Rembrandt of daily life in the 17th century, from the Rembrandt House collection. The exhibition runs in 2 parts due to the light sensitive nature of the etchings which need to be switched over. Part one runs 3 Mar to 27 May 2018; part two runs 2 Jun to 2 Sep 2018.
MOCO Museum – This new modern and contemporary art museum on Museumplein. Banksy: Laugh Now (includes Beanfield) runs until 31 May 2018; Roy Lichtenstein: Lasting Influence exhibition runs 3 Nov 2017 until 31 May 2018.
National Maritime Museum – Game Changers | Maritime Innovations, features 25 of the most beautiful, exciting and strangest inventions in Dutch maritime history. Runs 6 Oct 2017 to 1 Jul 2018. Dare to Discover is a virtual reality exhibition (ongoing) which takes visitors back to the Golden Age.
Tropenmuseum – Ethnographic museum featuring fascinating exhibitions on non-Western cultures. Body Art, an exhibition about body decorations from different cultures. Runs until 26 Aug 2018. Fashion Cities Africa explores the urban fashion scene in Casablanca, Johannesburg, Lagos, Nairobi as well as Africans in the Netherlands. Runs until 6 Jan 2019.
Allard Pierson Museum – For the Welfare of My Children: Stories of a Jewish Mosaic in Syria, how part of a mosaic floor from Apamea in 392 A.D. can tell many stories. Runs 2 Feb to 2 Apr 2018.
Huis Marseille – Ad van Denderen - Jerusalem Stone, six decades of photos of the West Bank by the Dutch photographer. Eddo Hartmann - Setting the Stage: Pyongyang, North Korea, Part 2, photos of everyday lives in North Korea. Both run 9 Dec 2017 to 4 Mar 2018. Bernd, Hilla and the Others / Photography from Dusseldorf, images from the German city. 9 Mar to 3 Jun 2018.
FOAM – Back to the Future, exhibition where contemporary photographers use techniques from the 19th century. Runs 19 Jan to 28 Mar 2018. Lucas Foglia, Human Nature, photo exhibition about people, nature, government and science. Runs 2 Feb to 15 Apr 2018. The Other Half - The Activist Photography of Jacob Riis, exhibition of late 19th century photos which brought attention to the plight of the poor in New York City. Runs 16 Feb to 15 Apr 2018.
Dutch Resistance Museum (Verzetsmuseum) - Dancing with the Enemy, tells the gripping story of Rosie Glaser (1914-2000), a non-practicing Jewish woman who ran a dance school and survived concentration camps in World War 2. Runs 22 Nov 2017 to 8 Mar 2018.
Van Loon Museum – Pastels, exhibition featuring pastel portraits from the 18th and 19th century. Runs 8 Mar to 4 Jun 2018.
National Holocaust Museum – The newly opened museum presents Tangible Memories from the Jewish Monument, exhibition of objects, photos and documents of people affected by the Holocaust. Opened 2 Sep 2016, ongoing until end 2019. Art to Remember: Post-War Work from our Museum Collections, works by 27 artists featuring wartime persecution of the Jews. Runs 26 Mar to 2 Sep 2018.
Jewish Historical Museum – Charlotte Salomon, exhibition of gouaches from the young Jewish artist who died during World War 2. Runs 20 Oct 2017 to 25 Mar 2018. Maria Austria, Living for Photography, comprehensive exhibition about the famous Amsterdam-Jewish photographer Maria Austria (1915-1975). Runs 26 Jan to 2 Sep 2018.
Stadsarchief (Amsterdam City Archives) – Rapenburgerstraat 1940-1945, exhibition about wartime persecution of Jews in Amsterdam during the Second World War. Runs 23 Feb to 17 Jun 2018.
EYE Film – Jesper Just, exhibition of the cinematographic artist, runs 17 Dec 2017 to 11 Mar 2018. Note EYE FIlm closed on 20 Mar 2018. Hito Steyerl, Ben Rivers, Wang Bing, exhibition featuring 3 filmmakers from Germany, UK and China respectively. Runs 24 Mar to 27 May 2018.
Oude Kerk – Christian Boltanski - Na, the French-born artist uses the entire Old Church deploying several monumental installations on the end of life theme. Runs at 24 Nov 2017 to 29 April 2018.
ARCAM – ARCAM presents a crash course (€7.50) on Amsterdam architecture and urbanism every Friday 1330-1415.
Museum of Bags and Purses – 100 Highlights, historical highlights from the museum collection with bags from the 16th to 19th centuries. Runs 12 Feb to 24 Apr 2018.
Body Worlds – Display of human body plastinate specimens at the permanent venue on Damrak. The exhibition focuses on happiness.
Star Wars Identities – Exhibition featuring 200 original Star Wars costumes, props, models and works of art. Runs 30 Sep 2017 to 11 Mar 2018 at Cinemec Utrecht. Next to Utrecht Leidsche Rijn station, about 45 minutes from Amsterdam.

3D Print Canal House – See a canal house being constructed using 3D printing techniques and sustainable materials.
