What's On in Amsterdam January 2012

 

As we move into the new year let's take a look at what's on in Amsterdam, Netherlands in January 2012.

Museums & Exhibitions

Hermitage Amsterdam – "Rubens, Van Dyck & Jordaens" – Flemish paintings from the Hermitage (runs until 16th March 2012).

Van Gogh Museum – "Snapshot. Painters and Photography, 1888-1915" looks at the early days of photography and its influence on artists. Runs to 8th January 2012. "East-west: Japan and japonism" – Japanese prints from the Van Gogh collection (to 29th Jan 2012); "Bedroom Secrets: Restoration of a Masterpiece" – fascinating exhibit on the recent restoration of van Gogh's The Bedroom (to 15th Jan 2012).

Rijksmuseum – "Nova Zembla" – exhibition of 75 objects from the arctic island left by Willem Barentsz in 1597 and only found 3 centuries later. Runs to 27th February 2012.

Rijksmuseum Schiphol – "Dutch Winters" – free exhibition at Schiphol airport featuring Dutch winter landscape scenes. Runs to 26th March 2012.

Amsterdam Museum – "Amsterdam DNA" – check out the relatively new permanent exhibition at Amsterdam Museum.

Nieuwe Kerk – "Judaism: A World of Stories" – major exhibition in conjunction with Amsterdam's Jewish Historical museum with more than 500 objects on display. Runs to 15th April 2012.

Tropenmuseum – "Kurkdjian & Co Photo Studio (1888-1936)" – photo exhibition on colonial life in the East Indies, runs until 15th January 2012.

Rembrandt House – “In Rembrandt's Footsteps, Dutch Paintings from a Private Collection” – exhibit of 17th century Dutch paintings from the collection of Alfred Bader from Milwaukee. Runs to 8th January 2012.

Allard Pierson Museum – “The Etruscans (men)” – a look at the life of the pre-Roman Italians in terms of trade, religion and war. Concurrent exhibition of Etruscan women runs in Leiden's Rijksmuseum van Oudheden. Runs throughout December (to 18th March 2012).

Jewish Historical Museum – “Saul Leiter - New York Reflections” – retrospective exhibition of American photographer who captured street life scenes in New York. (to 4th March 2012).

Huis Marseille – "Siebe Swart: Land of Air and Water" – Aerial photographs of Dutch waterworks.; "Naoya Hatakeyama: Natural Scenes" – includes photos of the destructive force of the 2011 Japanese tsunami. Both run to 26th February 2012.

FOAM – "Joel Sternfeld - Color Photographs since 1970" – Images of American daily life. Runs to 14th March 2012.

Stadsarchief – "Amsterdam New West '50-'60" – exhibition about the post-war development of one of Amsterdam's western suburbs illustrating the daily life of inhabitants at that time. Runs to 8th January 2012.

Bags & Purses Museum "Impressive Presents" (until March 2012) looks at the many donated items the museum has been given during its 15 year history.

Museum van Loon – "Van Loon Rides Out" – exhibition on the newly restored coach house. Runs until Feb 2012.

Verzetsmuseum – "A stitch a day: Embroidering in prison 1940-1945" – long term exhibit running to May 2012.

Netherlands Opera – Perform "The Nightingale and Other Fables", Muziektheater Amsterdam, various shows between 12th-22nd January.

Amsterdam International Fashion Week (AIFW) – Dutch fashion world on display with catwalk shows, trade fairs, presentations, lectures and parties. 25-29th January at the Westergasfabriek.

Boom Chicago – Comedy venue (including dinner) with shows "Can't Dutch This" and " Social Media Circus" running throughout January.

The Met Opera – "The Enchanted Island" shown live from the New York Met at Amsterdam's Pathé Tuschinski on 21st January.

Ice Rinks Go ice skating at small rinks set up at Leidseplein and Museumplein during January.

Free Concerts

Bimhuis – Jazz venue has free "Monday Match Dance & Music Impro Lab" on 9th January (2030). "Workshop + Session" on Tuesday 10th/17th/24th/31st Jan (2000).

Concertgebouw – Free lunchtime concert every Wednesday at 1230.

Muziekgebouw aan 't IJ – Free concert at 1230 on Tuesday 10th January– performed by Berlage Saxophone Quartet.

Muziektheater – Free lunchtime concert in the foyer every Tuesday at 1230. Performed by members of Opera Studio, the Netherlands Opera or Dutch Philharmonic orchestra.

Beurs van Berlage – Public rehearsal for the Netherlands Chamber Orchestra at the Yakult Zaal, 1200-1300 on 20th January.
