Museums & Exhibitions

Rijksmuseum – Reopened in April 2013 after 10 years of renovation, the Rijksmuseum's rich collection (including Rembrandt's Night Watch) is a must-see in Amsterdam. Anish Kapoor & Rembrandt, 3 painted reliefs from the British artist on show in the Gallery of Honour, 27 Nov 2015 to 6 Mar 2016. Selfies on Paper is an exhibition of 90 drawings, prints and photographs of self-portraits from the 17th to 20th century, running until 20 Mar 2016. Catwalk, an exhibition of Dutch fashion from 1625-1960 using photography by the renowned Erwin Olaf. Runs 20 Feb to 15 May 2016 in the Philips Wing. Breitner: Girl in Kimono, all versions of George Hendrik Breitner's painting together for the first time. Runs 20 Feb to 22 May 2016.

Van Gogh Museum Easy Virtue, an exhibition about prostitution as seen through the eyes of Van Gogh and other well-known 19th century artists. Runs 19 Feb to 19 Jun 2016.

Hermitage Amsterdam – Exhibition Spanish Masters from the Hermitage: The World of El Greco, Ribera, Zurbarán, Velázquez, Murillo & Goya runs from 28 Nov 2015 until 29 May 2016. Portrait Gallery of the Golden Age brings together for the first time 30 colossal 17th century group portraits from Amsterdam Museum and Rijksmuseum. Runs to the end of 2016.

Nieuwe Kerk Rome. Emperor Constantine’s Dream – major exhibition about the fascinating history of Christianity’s breakthrough in Rome under Emperor Constantine. In collaboration with the Vatican Museum, Capitoline Museum and the National Roman Museum. Runs 3 Oct 2015 to 7 Feb 2016. The Masterpiece series exhibition (this year Marc Chagall’s Calvary) runs 20 Feb until 10 April 2016.

StedelijkIsa Genzken: Mach Dich Hübsch, largest retrospective ever in the Netherlands of one of the most influential artists of the last forty years. Runs 29 Nov 2015 to 6 Mar 2016.  Seth Siegelaub: Beyond Conceptual Art is an overview of the life and work of the art pioneer, collector and publisher. Runs 12 Dec 2015 to 17 April 2016. Cally Spooner: And You Were Wonderful, On Stage is an immersive five-channel film installation by the British artist, running 16 Jan to 17 April 2016.

Tropenmuseum The Sixties, a Worldwide Happening, a cultural view of the dramatic changes all over the world during the 1960s. Runs 16 Oct 2015 to 13 Mar 2016. Secret Love, a contemporary art exhibition about the taboo surrounding LGBT identities in China. Runs until 8 May 2016.

Rembrandt House Rembrandt's Naked Truth – exhibition giving an insight on how nude models were drawn in Rembrandt’s time. Runs 12 Feb to 24 May 2016.

Allard Pierson MuseumSicily and the Sea – a dive into the past, this exhibition features antiquities found on the sea bed around the Mediterranean island. Running 9 Oct 2015 until 17 April 2016.

Stadsarchief (City Archives)Van Gogh: 400 days in Amsterdam, exhibition of  letters written by Vincent Van Gogh to his brother Theo, whilst living in Amsterdam. Runs 18 Dec 2015 to 17 April 2016. Amsterdam Park, photo exhibition of elevated views of Amsterdam's parks. Runs 28 Jan to 17 April 2016.

EYE FilmClose-Up, a group exhibition featuring film, video and spatial installations from a new generation of artists in the Netherlands. Runs 31 Jan to 22 May 2016.

FOAMFrancesca Woodman: On Being an Angel, retrospective exhibition of the American photographer, runs 18 Dec 2015 to 9 Mar 2016. Jacques Henri Lartigue: Life in Colour, exhibition from the famed French photographer noted for his colour images from the early 20th century; in contrast, Awoiska van der Molen: Blanco features monochrome landscape photography. Both run 22 Jan to 3 April 2016.

Huis Marseille Martin Roemers/Metropolis, photos of Megacities; Dana Lixenberg/Imperial Courts 1993-2015, photos of the LA housing project; both run 12 Dec 2015 to 6 March 2016.

Het GrachtenhuisWinter in Amsterdam, winter scenes that Dutch photographer Marie-Jeanne van Hövell tot Westerflier captured during Amsterdam winters 1990-2005. At the bel-etage floor of the Canal House museum, running 11 Dec 2015 to 22 Feb 2016. Following exhibition will be On The Wall, featuring maps of Amsterdam, runs 23 Feb to 8 May 2016.

Oude KerkGermaine Kruip: Geometry of the Scattering, exhibition from the Dutch artist about shapes and religious meaning. Runs 26 Nov 2015 to 27 Mar 2016.

Dutch Resistance MuseumColonial War 1945-1949. Desired and Undesired Images, exhibition looking at the war in the Dutch East Indies and how some photography was censored in the Dutch media. Runs 26 Nov 2015 to 3 April 2016.

Jewish Historical MuseumAfter the War was Over, photo exhibition of Jewish Amsterdam in the 1950s showing the recovery of Jewish life post-war. Runs 30 Oct 2015 to 14 Feb 2016. Amy Winehouse: A Family Portrait, intimate exhibition about the life of the singer and her Jewish-London roots. Runs 29 Feb to 4 Sep 2016.

Museum of Bags and PursesStreet Couture, how haute couture and street fashion meet. Runs 10 Jan to 5 Jun 2016.

De Appel Arts CentreSaskia Noor van Imhoff # +21.00, installations from the Dutch artist as though performing a metaphorical archaeological dig. Runs 6 Feb to 10 April 2016.

ARCAM – Amsterdam's architecture centre curates the exhibition WHAT? Work Home Apart Together, portraits living and working in Amsterdam buildings. Hosted at Infinity (formerly ING house) in Amsterdam Zuid, runs 18 Dec 2015 to 13 Mar 2016.

Body Worlds – Display of human body plastinate specimens at the permanent venue on Damrak. The exhibition focuses on happiness.

Kunsthal (Rotterdam)Keith Haring, The Political Line, major exhibition at this Rotterdam museum from the American artist and activist. Runs 20 Sep to 7 Feb 2016. Also on is Red Wealth. Soviet Design 1950-1980, a fascinating exhibition of Soviet consumer products. Runs 26 Sep 2015 to 14 Feb 2016. Philippe Halsman: Astonish Me! – Retrospective exhibition of one of the 20th century's greatest photographers. Runs 27 Feb to 12 June 2016.

Teylers Museum (Leiden)Real Winters, exhibition of beautiful 19th century Dutch winter landscapes and scenes. Runs 7 Nov 2015 to 6 Mar 2016.

Groninger Museum (Groningen)David Bowie Is, immersive retrospective exhibition about the life and work of the late English cultural icon. Extended run until 1o April 2016.

Note, due to Dutch EU presidency meetings, Amsterdam's Maritime Museum is closed during the following dates: 22 Jan to 7 Feb 2016, 10 to 24 April 2016 and 29 May to 3 June 2016.

ABN Amro Tournament – ATP tennis tour event to be held at Rotterdam’s Ahoy between 8-14 Feb 2016. Players of the 43rd edition include Marin Cilic and Gael Monfils (Roger Federer had to withdraw because of injury). Tickets €25 to €55.

Inline Skating:
Friday Night Skate – a 20km organised skate around the streets of Amsterdam held every Friday night (2030, weather permitting) from Vondelpark Pavilion.

Fiesta Cubana – Join DJ Arno at Mirror Center (near Amsterdam Muiderpoort Station) for the popular monthly Cuban-style salsa night. €5 entry, Friday 5 Feb from 10pm.

Ice*Amsterdam Get your skates on and hit the spectacular ice rink on Museumplein in the shadow of the Rijksmuseum. Open until 28 Feb 2016.

3D Print Canal House - See a canal house being constructed using 3D printing techniques and sustainable materials. The location is Asterweg 49, 1031 HM Amsterdam - get the free ferry across to Amsterdam North and walk beyond EYE Film.

Chocoa Festival – Chocolate lovers should head to the Beurs van Berlage in Amsterdam on 6-7 Feb 2016 for a festival promoting sustainable and good quality chocolate - includes workshops and tastings.

Amsterdam Salsa Festival – 9th edition with dance workshops, performances and a salsa party. Main venue is at the Rhone Congress & Party Centre (near Amsterdam Sloterdijk), 12-14 Feb 2016.

Comedytrain International Nick Thune plays at Toomler in Amsterdam on 14 Feb 2016 (2030).

Boom Chicago – Comedy and improv show held almost daily - now playing at Rozentheater on Rozengracht.

Dutch National Ballet – Performs a large-scale production on the life of Dutch spy and dancer Mata Hari at Muziektheater Amsterdam, a number of shows 6-26 Feb 2016. The junior company presents show Ballet Bubbles, 13 Feb to 6 March 2016.

We Love David Bowie – Tribute concert to the late British cultural icon. At North Sea Jazz Club on 19 Feb 2016 from 2100.

Ennio Morricone – The renowned Italian composer/conductor is on tour celebrating 60 years of music. Ziggo Dome in Amsterdam on 21 Feb 2016.

The Music of Simon & Garfunkel  – Simon & Garfunkel Revival Band play the Concertgebouw on 22 Feb 2016.

Matt Dusk – The Canadian jazz singer will be in concert at Meervaart Amsterdam on 22 Feb 2016.

Stevie Wonders ‘Songs In The Key of Life’  – Theatrical concert of the 1976 Stevie Wonder album by a host of musicians and singers.  Meervaart Theater in Amsterdam on 26 Feb 2016.

North Sea Jazz Club – Hosts a wide variety of jazz, funk, soul and world music every weekend at the Westergasfabriek. Dinner concerts include a 3 course meal by the in-house chef.

Huishoudbeurs 2016 – Large Dutch household event expo at Amsterdam RAI, 20-28 Feb 2016.

Expat Cinema – LAB111 cinema in Amsterdam's Old West hosts a monthly foreign film (on a Thursday night) with English subtitles. Son of Saul (Hungary) is screened on 25 Feb 2016.
