Museums & Exhibitions

Hermitage Amsterdam – "Rubens, Van Dyck & Jordaens" – Flemish paintings from the Hermitage (runs until 16th March 2012).

Rijksmuseum – "Nova Zembla" – exhibition of 75 objects from the arctic island left by Willem Barentsz in 1597 and only found 3 centuries later. Runs to 27th February 2012.

Rijksmuseum Schiphol – "Dutch Winters" – free exhibition at Schiphol airport featuring Dutch winter landscape scenes. Runs to 26th March 2012.

Nieuwe Kerk – "Judaism: A World of Stories" – Major exhibition on the Jewish religion in Amsterdam's New Church on Dam Square with over 500 objects including a 1st century Dead Sea Scroll. Running until 15th April 2012.

Amsterdam Museum – "Amsterdam DNA" – check out the relatively new permanent exhibition at Amsterdam Museum.

Rembrandt House Museum – "Drawing in Rembrandt's Day – Masterpieces from the Hamburger Kunsthalle" – Exhibition of over 100 drawings by Rembrandt and his predecessors / contemporaries. Until 22nd April 2012.

Jewish Historical Museum – “Saul Leiter - New York Reflections” – retrospective exhibition of American photographer who captured street life scenes in New York. Ends 4th March 2012. "My Name is Cohen" – exhibition about how a surname can affect a person's image and identity. To 11th March 2012.

Allard Pierson Museum – “The Etruscans (men)” – a look at the life of the pre-Roman Italians in terms of trade, religion and war. Concurrent exhibition of Etruscan women runs in Leiden's Rijksmuseum van Oudheden. Runs until 18th March 2012.

Huis Marseille – "Siebe Swart: Land of Air and Water" – Aerial photographs of Dutch waterworks.; "Naoya Hatakeyama: Natural Scenes" – includes photos of the destructive force of the 2011 Japanese tsunami. Both run to 26th February 2012.

FOAM – "Joel Sternfeld - Color Photographs since 1970" – Images of American daily life. Runs to 14th March 2012. "Arnon Grunberg - Les vacances de Monsieur Grunberg" – A photographer "embeds" himself with a Dutch family on holiday. 10th February- 18th March 2012.

Dutch Resistance Museum – "Amsterdam through the lens of a secret camera" – Everyday photos of Amsterdam taken secretly during the German occupation in WW2 by by Karel Bönnekamp. Runs to 1st April 2012.

Stadsarchief – "In Memoriam: The Deportation and Murder of Jewish, Roma and Sinti children, 1942-1945" – Exhibition at the city archive. Runs 10th February to 20th May 2012.

Bags & Purses Museum – "Felt bags by Werkstück" – Exhibition of felt bags with flowery themes by Werkstück, or designer Kerstin Schürmann. Runs to 11th March 2012.

Tropenmuseum – "Culture Couture - Fashion in the Tropenmuseum" – Young fashion talent from of Antwerp’s Academy of Fine Arts showcase a selection of spectacular creations inspired by other cultures. Runs to 26th June 2012.

ABN Amro Tournament – ATP tennis tour event to be held at Rotterdam’s Ahoy between 13th and 19th Feb 2012. Top players scheduled to enter this year are Roger Federer, Tomas Berdych and Juan Martin Del Potro.

European Superpull – Motor entertainment event at Rotterdam’s Ahoy on 25th Feb 2012.

Free Concerts

Bimhuis – Jazz venue has free "Monday Match Dance & Music Impro Lab" on 6th Feb (2030). Free Session event held every Tuesday evening at 2200 in the cafe.

Concertgebouw – Free lunchtime concert every Wednesday at 1230.

Muziekgebouw aan 't IJ – Free concert (piano player Nicolas van Poucke) at 1230 on Tuesday 14th Feb.

Muziektheater – Free lunchtime concert in the foyer every Tuesday at 1230. Performed by members of Opera Studio, the Netherlands Opera or Dutch Philharmonic orchestra.
