Museums & Exhibitions

Rijksmuseum – Reopened in April 2013 after 10 years of renovation, the Rijksmuseum's rich collection (including Rembrandt's Night Watch) is a must-see in Amsterdam. Late Rembrandt is a major retrospective of Rembrandt van Rijn’s later work from around 1652 until his death in 1669. Runs 12 Feb to 17 May 2015.

Hermitage Amsterdam – Exhibition Dining with the Tsars is running 6 Sep 2014 to 1 Mar 2015. Portrait Gallery of the Golden Age (opened on 29 Nov 2014) brings together for the first time 30 colossal 17th century group portraits from Amsterdam Museum and Rijksmuseum. Runs to the end of 2016.

Van Gogh Museum A new light on Van Gogh is the redesigned presentation of the Van Gogh museum collection (which opened 28 Nov 2014).

Nieuwe Kerk Magical Africa, major international exhibition with masks and sculptures from the Ivory Coast. Runs 25 Oct 2014 to 15 Feb 2015. Note, the church will be closed 16-27 Feb 2015. New exhibit Meesterwerk opens 28 Feb until 12 Apr 2015.

Allard Pierson MuseumKeys To Rome, a unique exhibition on Roman culture using immersive digital technology running concurrently in 4 cities – Rome, Alexandria, Amsterdam and Sarajevo. The Allard Pierson museum hosts the Amsterdam exhibition with a focus on 3 regions - Egypt , the Mediterranean and the Low Countries. Running 24 Sep 2014 to 15 Mar 2015.

Anne Frank HouseThe helpers of the Secret Annexe – temporary exhibition focussing on the people who helped the Frank family go into hiding. Runs to April 2015.

Tropenmuseum Look at me! is an exhibition of photo self-portraits ranging from 19th century colonial Indonesia, 1950s/1960s west Africa and the multicultural west of today. Runs 20 Nov 2014 to 15 Mar 2015. Grand Parade – Unique theatrical installation by Indonesian artist Jompet Kuswidananto in the museum's Great Hall. Runs 31 Oct 2014 to 22 Mar 2015.

Amsterdam ExpoGiants of the Ice Age – Exhibition about the Ice Age 30,000 years ago featuring Neanderthal man and large mammals such as the mammoth. Runs 27 Nov 2014 to 1 Mar 2015.

Magna Plaza – Permanent exhibition of Rembrandt, all his paintings, lifesize reproductions of all Rembrandt's works on show.

Body Worlds – Display of human body plastinate specimens at the new permanent venue on Damrak. The exhibition focuses on happiness.

StadsarchiefBreitner in Amsterdam, exhibition at the City Archives of G.H. Breitner (1857-1923) with sketches, watercolours and paintings of Amsterdam life. Runs 10 Oct 2014 to 1 Feb 2015.

Huis Marseille Dancing Light / Let it move you... photo exhibition on dance and its ‘primal power’ to move us. Runs 13 Dec 2014 to 8 Mar 2015.

Dutch Resistance MuseumTo the Farms! – moving exhibition about the 40,000 Dutch children who were evacuated to farms in 1945 to save them from starvation. Runs 30 Sep 2014 to 12 April 2015.

Oude KerkI/O underflow, exhibition from Tony Oursler using video performances to examine the contrast between the real world and the digital world. Runs 27 Nov 2014 to 29 Mar 2015.

Museum of Bags and PursesForever Vintage – vintage and retro bags dating from the 1920s up to the 1990s. Runs 15 Sep 2014 to 1 Mar 2015.

Jewish Historical MuseumSelemat Shabbat is a photo exhibit featuring the unknown history of Jews in the Dutch East Indies, runs 13 Oct 2014 to 8 Mar 2015.

Kunsthal RotterdamDesigning 007: Fifty Years of Bond Style, superb exhibition about James Bond films (gadgets, costumes, storyboards, graphic designs and props) running at Kunsthal in Rotterdam from 12 Oct 2014 to 8 Feb 2015.

Ajax home matches at the Amsterdam ArenA:
Ajax vs AZ – 5 Feb, 2045 (Eredivisie, Dutch League)

Tennis:
ABN Amro Tournament – ATP tennis tour event to be held at Rotterdam’s Ahoy between 9-15 Feb 2015. Top players scheduled to enter the 42nd edition in 2015 are Wawrinka, Berdych and Raonic. Tickets €24 to €50.

Equestrian:
Jumping Amsterdam – Indoor international equestrian event featuring some of the world’s best show jumping and dressage riders. Amsterdam RAI, 29 Jan to 1 Feb 2015.

Inline Skating:
Friday Night Skate – a 20km organised skate around the streets of Amsterdam held every Friday night (2030, weather permitting) from Vondelpark Pavilion.

Other Events in and around Amsterdam

Fiesta Cubana – Join DJ Arno at the Badcuyp Amsterdam for the popular monthly Cuban-style salsa night. €5 entry, Friday 6 Feb from 10pm.

Chinese New Year – Falls on 19 Feb 2015 which sees in the year of the Sheep. Head to Nieuwmarkt/Zeedijk area for celebrations that weekend.

Amsterdam Salsa Festival – 7th edition with dance workshops, performances and a salsa party. Main venue is at the Rhone Congress & Party Centre, 6-8 Feb 2015.

Pathé Met Opera Iolanta / Duke Bluebeard's Castle shown live from the New York Met at Amsterdam's Tuschinski on 15 Feb 2015.

Boom Chicago – Comedy and improv show held almost daily - now playing at Rozentheater on Rozengracht.

Dutch National Ballet – Performs Jewels at Muziektheater Amsterdam, a number of shows between 12-26 Feb 2015.

Dutch National Opera – Performs Tamerlano (Händel) and Alcina (Händel) at Muziektheater Amsterdam, various shows 24 Feb to 1 Mar 2015.

Medea – Toneelgroep Amsterdam presents an adaptation of the Greek tragedy, directed by noted Australian actor, writer and director Simon Stone. This season Tonnelgroep is offering live English surtitles for performances every Thursday - Medea with English surtitles is on 5 Feb 2015 (other surtitled shows on 22/29 Jan and 26 Mar 2015) at Stadsschouwburg.

North Sea Jazz Club – Hosts a wide variety of jazz, funk, soul and world music every weekend (Friday & Saturday) at the Westergasfabriek. Dinner concerts include a 3 course meal by the in-house chef.

Huishoudbeurs 2015 – Large Dutch household event expo at Amsterdam RAI, 21 Feb to 1 Mar 2015.

Free Concerts

Bimhuis – Jazz venue has free "Workshop + Session" on Tuesdays at 2000.

Concertgebouw – Free lunchtime concert every Wednesday at 1230 - note, concerts to be held only on Wed 18/25 Feb 2015. Get there early to ensure admission.

Muziekgebouw aan 't IJ – Free concert at 1230 on Tuesday 10 Feb 2015.

Muziektheater – Free lunchtime concert in the foyer on Tuesdays at 1230. Performed by members of Opera Studio, the Netherlands Opera or Dutch Philharmonic orchestra.

North Sea Jazz Club – Free jam sessions are held every Wednesday evening at the neighbouring Pizza Pazzani restaurant (at Westergasfabriek).
