Museums & Exhibitions

Hermitage AmsterdamGauguin, Bonnard, Denis. A Russian Taste for French Art, exhibition on the 3 French artists from the late 19th century/early 20th century. On until 28 Feb 2014.

Nieuwe Kerk – Amsterdam's New Church presents MING: Emperors, Artists and Merchants in Ancient China – a major exhibition telling the story of the Chinese Ming dynasty (1368–1644). Running until 2 Feb 2014. Masterpiece, an annual series featuring a particular religious work of art will run from 22 Feb to 6 Apr 2014.

Rijksmuseum – Reopened in April 2013 after 10 years of renovation, the Rijksmuseum's rich collection (including Rembrandt's Night Watch) is a must-see in Amsterdam. Exhibitions: Rembrandt - Auerbach: Raw Truth is a special display of paintings by noted British painter Frank Auerbach, runs until 16 Mar 2014; Cover up! Coats & Jackets 1630-1940, an exhibit of 40 coats from the Rijksmuseum collection, running until 8 Jun 2014.

Van Gogh Museum presents Félix Vallotton. Fire beneath the ice, an exhibition of paintings and prints from the Franco-Swiss artist. Runs 14 Feb to 1 Jun 2014.

StedelijkMarcel Wanders: Pinned Up at the Stedelijk, large survey of this distinguished Dutch designer. Open 1 Feb to 15 Jun 2014.

Allard Pierson MuseumThe Crimea. Gold and Secrets of the Black Sea exhibition opens on 7 Feb 2014, runs until 5 May 2014.

StadsarchiefHeineken's Amsterdam, an exhibition at the City Archives on Gerard Heineken (1841-1893) and how his brewery business and philanthropy impacted the city. Runs 7 Feb to 11 May 2014.

Magna Plaza – Permanent exhibition of Rembrandt, all his paintings, lifesize reproductions of all Rembrandt's works on show.

Amsterdam ExpoTitanic: The Artifact Exhibition – see authentic artefacts salvaged from the wreck of the world famous Titanic which sank in 1912. Runs until 11 May 2014.

Tropenmuseum Black & White – 150 years after the abolition of slavery, this exhibition asks who is black and who is white. Featuring photos, videos, personal stories and historical documents. Runs until 1 July 2014.

Jewish Historical MuseumShtetl in the city: Antwerp through the lens of Dan Zollmann is an exhibition by the Belgian photographer documenting the lives of Hasidic Jews in Antwerp. Ends 5 May 2014. Schönberg & Kandinsky. Artistic Revolutionaries, an exhibit on how composer and painter came together. Runs to 16 Mar 2014.

Oude KerkMemento, multiple exhibitions marking the old church as a new venue for contemporary art. Runs until 2 Mar 2014.

FOAMWilliam Klein retrospective exhibition is running through to 12 Mar 2014.

Huis Marseille Golden Years - Rob Hornstra's Russia documents the area around Sochi and the Black Sea, where the 2014 Winter Olympics will be held. Runs until 9 Mar 2014 along with other Russian themed exhibitions.

EYE Film The Quay Brothers’ Universum, a major exhibition on the American Quay brothers. Runs until 9 Mar 2014.

Rembrandt House Rembrandt, or Not? Old Drawings, New Names, exhibition of 60 drawings which shed light on how art historians make attributions and can recognise a genuine Rembrandt work. Opens 1 Feb and runs to 27 Apr 2014.

Museum of Bags and PursesParis! Paris! exhibits a unique collection of advertising fans from early twentieth-century Paris. Runs through to 2 Mar 2014.

Geelvinck Hinlopen House1813, Netherlands liberated by Russia exhibition at the grand canal house commemorating the liberation from France. Runs until 19 May 2014.

Willet-HolthuysenSilver Miniatures, presentation of part of the museum's collection of Dutch silver miniatures from the 17th to 19th centuries. Runs until 31 Aug 2014.

ABN Amro Tournament – ATP tennis tour event to be held at Rotterdam’s Ahoy between 10-16 Feb 2014. Top players scheduled to enter the 41st edition in 2014 are del Potro, Gasquet, Berdych, Tsonga and Wawrinka. Tickets €24 to €50.

Ice/Speed Skating:
Olympic Stadium Amsterdam converts itself into a large outdoor ice skating track. Open to the public from 1 Feb to 26 Feb 2014. The KPN NK (Dutch championship) Allround & Sprint event takes place over the weekend of 28 Feb to 2 Mar 2014.

Inline Skating:
Friday Night Skate – a 20km organised skate around the streets of Amsterdam held every Friday night (2030, weather permitting) from Vondelpark Pavilion.

Fiesta Cubana – Join DJ Arno at the Badcuyp Amsterdam for the popular monthly Cuban-style salsa night. €5 entry, Friday 7th Feb from 10pm.

Amsterdam Salsa Festival – 7th edition with dance workshops, performances and a salsa party. Main venue is at the Rhone Congress & Party Centre, 7-9 Feb 2014.

Sunday Market – Monthly market event with a focus on fashion, art and design, plus good food and drink. Sunday 2 Feb from 1200 at Westergasfabriek.

NeighbourFood Market – Another Sunday market event (from 1100) featuring local food products. Westergasfabriek on Sunday 16 Feb 2014.

IJ-Hallen - Huge flea market event held at NDSM-wharf in north Amsterdam. 15-16 Feb 2014.

Netherlands Opera – Perform "Der Ring des Nibelungen", Muziektheater Amsterdam, various shows in late January to mid-February.

Pathé Met Opera – " Dvorák– Rusalka" shown live from the New York Met at Amsterdam's Tuschinski on 8 Feb 2014.

Boom Chicago – Comedy and improv show held almost daily - now playing at Rozentheater on Rozengracht.

North Sea Jazz Club – Hosts a wide variety of jazz, funk, soul and world music every weekend (Friday & Saturday) at the Westergasfabriek. Dinner concerts include a 3 course meal by the in-house chef.

Huishoudbeurs 2014 – Large Dutch household event expo at Amsterdam RAI, 15-23 Feb 2014.

Free Concerts

Boom! Amsterdam is an opera – The Netherlands Opera presents short recitations and unique musical works at various places around Amsterdam. With an environmental and sustainability theme, these performances run throughout January until February 2014.

Bimhuis – Jazz venue has free "Workshop + Session" on Tuesday 4/11/18/25 Feb at 2000. The Monday Match Dance & Music Impro Lab is on 3 Feb 2014 from 2030.

Concertgebouw – Free lunchtime concert every Wednesday at 1230 - concerts to be held on 5/12/19/25* Feb 2014. (*note, Tuesday 25 Feb)

Muziekgebouw aan 't IJ – Free concert at 1230 on Tuesday 18 Feb 2014.

Muziektheater – Free lunchtime concert in the foyer on Tuesdays (4/11/18/25 Feb 2014) at 1230. Performed by members of Opera Studio, the Netherlands Opera or Dutch Philharmonic orchestra.

North Sea Jazz Club – Free jam sessions are held every Wednesday evening at the neighbouring Pizza Pazzani restaurant (at Westergasfabriek).
