Vapiano - Excellent Self Service Italian Restaurant in Amsterdam

Vapiano is a relatively new Italian self-service restaurant located at the OBA central public library on Oosterdokskade not far from Amsterdam Central station.

Vapiano (meaning "go slow") is a chain with locations mainly in Germany but expanding worldwide. There are 2 locations in Netherlands - one in Amsterdam, the other in the Hague.

At Vapiano you are given a chip card when you enter the restaurant - this is scanned each time you place an order. At the end of your meal take the card to the cash desk and pay your bill.

On the ground floor there is an outer terrace and bar where you can be served drinks. For eating go upstairs to the first floor - here you will find the kitchen, another bar, plenty of comfortable seating and a small balcony. If you wish to eat outside on the terrace you need to pay for your food first.

Food is ordered directly from the cooks at the kitchen counter. The menu consists of antipasti, salads, pizzas and pasta. The cheapest item on the menu is the bruschetta (toasted bread with tomatoes, garlic and oil) at €2.75. The salads range from €3.75 to €7.25.

Fresh pizza and pasta is made on-site and cooked to order using fresh ingredients - the kitchen is all open and you can watch the staff at work.

You can choose the type of pasta you want and which of 20 sauce combinations you would like - a nice touch was to get a generous serving of fresh parmesan.

There are 17 different pizza choices. The price of pizzas and pasta mains range from €5.75 to €8.75 which is good value.

The pasta we had was cooked in about 3 minutes whereas the pizza took around 15 minutes as the counter was busy. We know Italian food and can say the quality of the dishes we had at Vapiano was very good - the only criticism is that the pasta can sometimes be a bit sticky.

The decor/ambience is stylish and each table includes fresh herbs, olive oil and balsamic vinegar.

The bar serves various desserts and Illy coffee (€2).

Staff is multi-national / multi-lingual, English is spoken widely. Free wifi is available.

Vapiano is highly recommended for locals and visitors, great Italian food at a fair price and a welcome alternative to V&D La Place. They plan to open more stores around Amsterdam and the Netherlands so stay tuned. They are open to midnight Sunday to Thursday and to 1am on Friday and Saturday.
