Rembrandt House Museum Amsterdam
The Rembrandt museum is the Amsterdam house where famous Dutch painter Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn (1606-1669) lived. It contains a permanent collection of Rembrandt etchings and holds regular exhibitions of other noted Dutch artists from the same 'Golden Age' period. |
The large house dates back to 1607. Rembrandt himself moved in during 1639 after purchasing the building for 13,000 guilders which at the time was considerable sum of money. Rembrandt stayed in the house for 19 years producing some of his most famous works including the NightWatch which can be seen at the Rijksmuseum.
In 1658 after persistent problems paying off his debts Rembrandt was declared bankrupt - a detailed inventory of his possessions was made on behalf of his creditors - and Rembrandt moved to a smaller house on Rozengracht (Amsterdam) where he remained until his death.
For around the next 250 years the house had a number of different occupants before being bought by the city council who turned it over to a foundation - it was finally opened as a museum dedicated to the artist in 1911. In the 1990s a modern new wing was added and the house was restored carefully. The bankruptcy inventory was vital in helping create an authentic recreation of the home.
Today the house gives a good feel of where Rembrandt lived, worked and of life in the 17th century. Check out the small box-beds of the day where people slept in semi-upright positions for fear of too much blood rushing to their heads. The largest room in the house is Rembrandt's original studio where he painted his masterpieces.
Rembrandt also had a bizarre collection of rarities from all over the world including busts of Roman emperors, spears, shells and butterflies - these can be seen in the Cabinet Room.
The visit to the house and exhibition takes 45 minutes to 1 hour in a one-way direction. A hand-held audio guide tour is available free of charge.
The Rembrandt house located very near Waterlooplein and is open daily between 1000 and 1700. Current admission is €10 for adults, €3 for children 6-17 and free entry for museumkaart, iamsterdamcard and children under 6. Note, special exhibitions can attract a small supplement.
Waterlooplein is served by trams 9 / 14 and the metro.
