The organic (biologisch) food movement is very well established in the Netherlands as we have seen in our article on organic food shopping in Amsterdam.

The following is a listing of 14 restaurants and cafés in Amsterdam which serve organic or part-organic ingredients on their menu. We have chosen a variety of locations which should appeal to a broad range of budgets and tastes.

Beter & Leuk

This is a bio café located in the east of the city near the Amstel river. Owners Ilse and Maja offer an organic breakfast/brunch and lunch menu with some healthy drinks and shakes. Betty’s

A quality organic vegetarian restaurant in the Rivierenbuurt district of Amsterdam. A small establishment run with care for over 30 years by a Dutch couple. De Kas

A unique restaurant setting in a converted greenhouse at Frankandael Park in the south-east of Amsterdam. Part organic, they grow much of their own herbs and vegetables. Other food on the menu is locally sourced. De Kas offers a set menu for lunch (3-4 courses) and dinner (5-6 courses) and a wine list of 40 sustainable wines. De Oranjerie (The Orangery)

Museum café in the Orangery building (1875) at the beautiful Hortus Botanical Gardens in the Jewish quarter of the city. It offers garden visitors a 3 course lunch deal. De Peper

A legalised squat with an organic, vegan kitchen open on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday evenings. It opens from 1800, the food is served 1900-2030. It is staffed only by volunteers and note there is no actual table service. Reservations can only be made on the day 1600-1900 (T: +31(0)20-4122954). You are expected to pay between €7-€10 for a soup and main, desserts are €1.50 extra. Located at Overtoom 301, 1054 HW Amsterdam.

De Waaghals

De Waaghals (The Dare Devil) is a veggie, mainly-organic restaurant in De Pijp not far from the Heineken brewery. Established in 1981, the seasonal menu changes regularly. Deshima Freshop

Macrobiotic shop with café serving vegan snacks made with organic ingredients. Menu includes soups, salads, tempura and dishes based on grains, beans or sea vegetables. Dignita Hoftuin

This light and airy glass-house café and terrace is located in the Hoftuin gardens behind the Hermitage Museum. It has a creative all-day brunch menu with some items being organic and locally sourced. Run as a social enterprise with all profits donated to a foundation. Noorderlicht

Noorderlicht (Northern Lights) is located at NDSM-wharf, a short ferry ride from central Amsterdam. This relaxed café-restaurant offers a menu with organic, local and sustainable products. Veggies, vegans and gluten-free eaters are catered for as well. A good place to chill out for a while. Pianeta Terra

A quality Italian-inspired restaurant near Koningsplein (near the Flower Market) serving organic, seasonal produce and promoting the slow food movement. Set menu options (3-7 courses) are available with a good selection of organic Italian wines. Open Monday-Thursday 1800-2130, Friday-Saturday 1800-2200, reservations are recommended. SLA

A local chain of organic salad bars selling seasonal salads, juices and soups. It now has 7 outlets around Amsterdam including Ceintuurbaan 149, Westerstraat 34, Utrechtsestraat 10HS, Haarlemmerdijk 50 and Middenweg 55B-H which are all open daily from 1100-2100.

Stadspaleis

‘t Wethoudertje

Unlimited Health Bistraw & Juice Bar
