Van Loon Museum Amsterdam
The Museum Van Loon is a double-sized canal house located on the Keizersgracht canal in Amsterdam. It was owned by the wealthy Van Loon merchant family who had interests in the Dutch East India company. The house and garden is open to the general public. |
The house was built in 1672 and the first resident was Ferdinand Bol, a famous Dutch painter and student of Rembrandt. The house was then occupied by different families until the Van Loons bought the house in 1884. The last resident Van Loon died in 1945 and the house was renovated and opened as a museum in 1973.
Over 4 floors this grand house contains a fine collection of period furniture, porcelain and silverware from the 18th century. There are also many Van Loon family portraits on show dating back as far as the 16th century.
Each room has a summary sheet in Dutch and English describing the room and its main contents. On the lower floor there is also a video presentation which gives some background info on the house and its owners - here you can also head out to the large and very pleasant garden.
The Museum Van Loon is open Wednesdays to Mondays (closed Tuesday) between 1100 and 1700. The house can be found on Keizersgracht (south side) just off Vijzelstraat, not far from Muntplein. Admission costs €8 for adults, €4 for children 6-18, under 6, museum card and iamsterdam card holders get in for free. Guided tours can be arranged on request for an extra fee.
