This is a review of the CitizenM Amsterdam Airport hotel which could be a good option if you have an early flight at Schiphol.
The 230 room hotel is located conveniently about 5 minutes walk from the terminal - come out of the station hall exit and head right following the signs. There is a covered walkway most of the way though there are a couple of roads to cross.
On arrival, check-in/check-out is quick and automated - it is done using one of the touch screen terminals in the lobby which will activate your room card. There was a member of staff on-hand (known as an "ambassador") to help people with this procedure.
The funky-furnished lobby has a 24 hour canteen and lounge area which sells basic snacks such as salads, wraps and sandwiches. At night there is a bar service selling beer, spirits and cocktails. We can't comment on food / beverages as we did not consume any due to a 5am early check-out.
The room itself is a very compact rectangular block of just 14 square metres. Because of the shape there is no separate bathroom - there is a toilet and a rain shower housed in cylindrical pods in the middle of the room - even with the privacy screens, this could be a problem if you are sharing the room with someone you don't know too well.
Fittings are modern and hi-spec with a large, comfy king bed against the window, mood lighting with different settings and a Philips touch screen pad to control lights, blinds, TV etc. The hotel has free WiFi internet (note: Schiphol airport also now has free WiFi available).
Very convenient for early Schiphol flights and transfers
Room rates (from around €80) are very reasonable and significantly cheaper than the Sheraton and Hilton, the other 2 airport hotels
Excellent, helpful staff
Quite a small space for 2 people with 2 large cases (though note the under bed storage space)
The Philips touch pad we had seemed to brightly flash every so often during the night and we had to cover it to get some sleep!
Not much of a view of the airport from our room (from the top floor air side you will get a limited view of the budget H gates)
UPDATE: Reviews of the hotel have been consistently good since its opening in 2008. We know the hotel has also changed to a different type of touch pad control than the one mentioned above.
We would highly recommend staying here before flying out of Schiphol and it is certainly a unique hotel concept to experience. Some people also decide to base themselves here for short visits to Amsterdam, which is only a 15 minute train ride from the airport station. For longer stays however, it would probably be better to stay in the city centre.
CitizenM has a sister hotel close to Amsterdam Zuid station - useful for travellers visiting the Zuidas business district or Amsterdam RAI convention centre. There is also a CitizenM Rotterdam and international locations in London, Glasgow and New York.
