Canvas - Amsterdam Panorama
Canvas is a cafe and club on the top floor (and former canteen) of the old Volkskrant newspaper building in the south of Amsterdam. Canvas is located on the 7th floor and is accessible by lift from the lobby. It offers some great views of surrounding south Amsterdam and the Amstel river area. |
Food is of a reasonable eetcafe standard - the lunch menu consists of a range of sandwiches priced from around €5; the dinner menu has a variety of mains priced from €13-17.50. The house speciality are the "lazy-bitch" fries, possibly one of the best chips in Amsterdam.
Every Friday and Saturday night after 2200 Canvas becomes a club with dance floor and guest DJ. They have an extensive cocktail menu.
The outside roof terrace is north facing towards the city centre (with views also available to the west and east) - with a sharp eye you can spot many of Amsterdam's main sights. It's a relaxed place to come for a drink/bite to eat and if you visit in the evening you could see the sunset (Amsterdam weather permitting!).
Canvas is open daily from 1100 (1200 Sat/Sun) until 0100 (0300 Fri/Sat night).
Canvas is located on Wibautstraat in the south-east of central Amsterdam, 5-10 minutes walk north of Amstel station. You can also get here by tram 3, metro lines 51/53/54 (stop:Wibautstraat, exit: "Gijsbrecht van Aemstelstraat") and night bus 355 (Central Station to Bijlmermeer). Note that Wibautstraat is currently undergoing some construction work.
