Nantes is a small, pleasant city located on the north-western side of France and is some 730km from Amsterdam.
Let's look at the options for travel between these cities by air, train and bus...
1. Amsterdam-Nantes by Air
Flying is by far the quickest and easiest option for travel between the 2 cities. Flights between Amsterdam Schiphol (AMS) and Nantes Atlantique (NTE) take approximately 1 hour 30 minutes.Air France Regional (Skyteam) is the only airline to fly non-stop between Amsterdam and Nantes. The 3x daily flights are made using Canadair Regional Jet 700 aircraft. Return fares are usually available from €250 including checked luggage although the occasional special offer can be a bit lower.
2. Amsterdam-Nantes by Train
Amsterdam-Nantes by rail can be done in just under 7 hours via Paris. From Amsterdam you take the high-speed Thalys service which takes just over 3 hours to reach Paris Gare du Nord (having made stops in Schiphol, Rotterdam, Antwerp and Brussels).
At Paris Nord you need to make a transfer to Paris Montparnasse station. This can be done by taking Metro line 4 (direction Porte d'Orleans). From Paris Montparnasse you take a TGV train to Nantes with a journey time of 2 hours 15 minutes.
From Nantes to Amsterdam you would do the trip in reverse - TGV, then at Paris Montparnasse take Metro 4 (direction Porte de Clignancourt) to Paris Nord for the Thalys. Prices can vary for this trip depending on demand. The cheapest one-way through-fares start from €55 (2nd class, comprising of a Thalys "No-Flex" ticket and a TGV "PREM" fare) and €120 (1st class).
You could also combine flying with the TGV train. For example, take a flight from Amsterdam to Paris Charles De Gaulle - there is a station at the airport with a direct TGV service to Nantes.
3. Amsterdam-Nantes by Coach
Eurolines operates a 1x weekly overnight coach service between Amsterdam and Nantes which takes just over 26 hours. The bus leaves Amsterdam on Fridays at 1830 - a change of bus is required at 0545 in Tours before you arrive in Nantes (bus station Baco) at 0845 on Saturday.
From Nantes the bus departs on Sundays at 2000. After a change in Tours (2330), the bus arrives in Amsterdam at 1045 Monday. Prices start from around €34 single.
French coach operator OUIBUS has separate bus services for Amsterdam-Paris (8-10 hours, singles from €15) and Paris-Nantes (5-7 hours, singles from €15).
