Splurge

There are a number of excellent five-star hotels in Amsterdam for those after a bit of luxury.

Grand Hotel Amrath - Set in a beautiful art deco building (The Shipping House) quite close to central station, this hotel has large, luxurious rooms and some very good facilities including stunning indoor pool. Many rooms have fine views over Amsterdam. Highly recommended for a special stay.

Radisson Blu Hotel - Good central location this is an excellent, stylish, modern hotel with great facilities for both business and leisure travellers. Try to get the very good breakfast included in your rate.

Amstel Intercontinental - Luxurious and elegant hotel on the river Amstel, located on the eastern side of town. Not everyone's cup of tea and by no means cheap but probably the most exclusive address in town.

Seven One Seven - If you want to stay at one of Amsterdam's grand canal (Prinsengracht) houses then this is the place. Tastefully decorated, small hotel with a personal touch and right in the heart of town.

Mid-range

Consider the 4-star Banks Mansion on Vijzelstraat / Herengracht, located close to Muntplein. Retro designed building, fine views over the Herengracht canal and complimentary breakfast and snacks in the lounge.

moevenpick amsterdam

The striking high rise Moevenpick Hotel is located on the new waterfront area of the Ij not far from central station. The modern, elegant rooms boast spectacular views over Amsterdam. Complimentary wifi is available to guests.

Trams 25 and 26 stop nearby the hotel.

For something a bit different try the quirkily decorated but popular Hotel Estherea close to Dam Square. They have a large fish tank in the lobby and a quaint old library room.

Budget

Hotel Zandbergen - Located in the quiet museum district close to Vondelpark this small, charming property offers good value rooms with a personal service. They also have a great spacious penthouse with roof terrace. Another two hotels in the museum quarter to consider: Hotel Conscious Museum Square - not far from Museumplein, with its very comfy beds and green woodland themed decor; and Fita Hotel which has very good value rooms and service, near the Van Gogh museum.

Hotel V Frederiksplein - Relatively new and 'hip' independent hotel with (smallish) doubles from around €80-€110 which always includes continental breakfast and free wifi. Location on the Weteringschans is decent - within easy walking distance of Utrechtsestraat, Rembrandt Plein, Leidseplein and the De Pijp district. They also have Hotel Victorie at Victorieplein in the south of the city not far from Amstel station.

Hotel Ibis - Functional and good value chain hotel literally next to Amsterdam central station. Modern rooms are small and basic; convenient location for those travelling by train.

If you have an early flight from Schiphol then try the futuristic and highly rated CitizenM Amsterdam Airport hotel which is very near the terminal. Read our hotel review here: CitizenM Amsterdam Airport Hotel Review.

They also have a property near Amsterdam Zuid station (CitizenM Amsterdam City) which is good for those visiting the Amsterdam RAI convention centre and only a tram ride from the centre. CitizenM rooms can be had from €80 per night, cheap by Amsterdam and Schiphol airport standards.
