Hermitage Amsterdam
“Matisse to Malevich: Pioneers of Modern Art from the Hermitage” includes works by Matisse, Picasso, Van Dongen, De Vlaminck, Derain and others. Running during May and June (until September).

Van Gogh Museum
“Paul Gaugin: The Breakthrough into Modernity” – exhibition.
Runs throughout May (ends June 6th 2010).

Oude Kerk (Old Church)
“World Press Photo” – Exhibition of the best photo journalism from the last year hosted in Amsterdam’s oldest church (pictured left).  Note, some images not for the faint of heart. Running throughout May and until June 20th.

Rijksmuseum
“Tulips in Amsterdam” – exhibit of drawings and prints of tulips including the rare tulip book by Jacob Marrel. To June 1st.

Rijksmuseum Schiphol
“Sunny Skies” - 17th century Dutch painters inspired by Italian landscapes. Throughout May and June to September.

Amsterdam Historical Museum
“Kienholz – The Hoerengracht” – Exhibition examines the connection between art and the red-light district. On during May and June (through to August).

Huis Marseille Photography Museum
“First Light” – Astronomy photos exhibition.
Runs to May 30th 2010.

Tropenmuseum
“Africa Scores” – With the World Cup in South Africa this exhibition celebrates African football. From June 12th to the end of August.

Amsterdam Stadarchief
“The First Photos of Amsterdam” – photos of the city from 1850-1875. Runs until June 27th.

Hollandse Schouwburg
“Auschwitz now. Three generations later” – Exhibition in the entrance hall about a Jewish family’s reflections on past events. Until May 31st.

Rembrandt House
“Picturalism in Dutch Photography 1890-1925″ – Shows the development of photographic techniques in Holland in the early 20th century. To June 20th.

Museums of Bags and Purses
“Crystal loves Leather” – Swarovski crystals on bags and accessories. Through May and June until end of August.

Museum Van Loon
“Laurence Aëgerter – Seek and Hide” -  Exhibition from this French artist. From May 28th to July 11th.

Open Garden Days 2010
“Courts and Community Gardens” – The weekend of June 18th, 19th and 20th will see around 30 canal gardens open to the public. Head to the following museums to start your tour: Bible Museum, Huis Marseille, Museum Van Loon or Museum Willet-Holthuysen.

Sport in Amsterdam / Netherlands

This year’s cycling Giro D’Italia (Tour of Italy) will be starting in Amsterdam and thousands of spectators are expected to line the streets. There will also be a small photo exhibition on the Giro at the Stadsarchief (City Archive) and various Italian themed events around the city.

Stage 1 on Saturday May 8th is an 8.4km prologue time trial around the city – from Museumplein to the Olympic stadium.

Stage 2 on May 9th will be a 209km ride from Amsterdam to Utrecht. The stage starts at Museumplein, will cross the Berlage bridge near Amstel and then heads south.
Stage 3 on May 10th is from Amsterdam to the city of Middelburg in Zeeland.  The stage starts at Zuidas in Amsterdam south.

The Netherlands football team prepares for the FIFA World Cup in South Africa by playing the following friendly matches:

Netherlands vs Ghana – on June 1st (2045) at Stadion Feyernoord in Rotterdam.
Netherlands vs Hungary – on June 5th (1400) at the Amsterdam ArenA.
Tickets range from €22.50 to €60.

Tennis: Unicef Open
International grass court tournament (both men’s ATP and women’s WTA) held at the Autotron Rosmalen (near Den Bosch, 1 hour south of Amsterdam). June 13th to 19th, day tickets €30 to €45

Holland Festival – The country’s biggest arts performance festival running June 1st to 23rd. Scores of events going on including classical, dance, opera, film, theatre, visual arts – attracting a high caliber of international performers. Venues include the main theatres around the city.

Paul Merton – The British comedian (and friends) will perform a show at the Carre Theater on June 5th.

Amsterdam Roots Festival – Popular international world music festival to be held at various venues between June 17th and 20th. The highlight will be the free open air event with 6 stages at Oosterpark (a pubic park in the east) on Sunday 20th. Lots of performances, workshops, kids events and ethnic food stands.

ITs Festival Amsterdam – Theatre festival in Amsterdam to be held between June 22nd to 30th featuring this year’s arts graduates. Various genres on show – acting, dance, singing, mime artists – and many shows are English or subtitled.

Art Amsterdam – International art fair with 129 galleries – May 26th to 30th at Amsterdam RAI.

Fiesta Cubana – Join DJ Arno who hosts a monthly salsa dance party at the Badcuyp (Eerste Sweelinckstraat 10, just off Albert Cuyp straat). Next events on May 7th and June 4th (2200 – 0245) – entry €5.

Wide range of classical concerts almost daily at the Concertgebouw and Muziekgebouw aan’t Ij.

Westerkerk – Free lunchtime organ concerts every Friday at 1300.

Keukenhof – The world famous flower garden park 25km from Amsterdam is open to the public until May 16th. This year’s theme is “From Rusia With Love“.

Queen’s Day 2010 (Koninginnedag) in Amsterdam will be on Friday April 30th. This is a national holiday and huge street party with concerts, markets and other activities to celebrate the Dutch Queen’s birthday (actually the Queen Mother’s birthday, as the current Queen Beatrix was born in cold January!).

Everyone should experience Queen’s Day in Amsterdam at least once in their life – to see thousands of orange-decked Dutch hit the streets.

The celebrations officially starts the evening before (April 29th, “Queen’s Night” or koninginnenacht) which goes on until the early hours. Events get going again in the morning and continue through the day. The Queen traditionally makes an appearance live on TV from a chosen town during the morning. This year she will visit Wemeldinge and Middelburg in the Zeeland province – security is likely to be very tight there after last year’s incident in Apeldoorn.

The free market (vrijmarkt) is where anyone can set up a stall on designated streets and sell clothes, food, drinks and any old tat or bric-a-brac. Prices are negotiable which is all part of the fun. Many residents set up stalls outside their own houses and actually mark their spot with tape (“bezet“, or occupied) days before. There are also professional traders who take advantage of the tax free opportunity.

The centre of Amsterdam becomes extremely busy with up to 3/4 million visitors to the city. If you can, avoid arriving via Amsterdam Central Station which gets overcrowded as visitors flock from all over the country.

You will have to get around the centre on foot as there is limited public transport within the party zone. Be aware that some places can become very crowded and difficult to pass. Also watch out for pickpockets.

On Queen’s day Amsterdam’s canals are put to good use with hundreds of boat parties on the water. There are organised stage concerts at various places around the city whilst a host of street performers provide entertainment elsewhere.

The Queen’s Day party takes place all over Amsterdam centre – the main squares of Rembrandtsplein, Leidseplein and Museumplein; the historic Jordaan neighbourhood; the parks Vondelpark and Westerpark. For a slightly more laid back and authentic experience head out to De Pijp (near Albert Cuyp street market) just south of the centre.

TEFAF is the world’s leading fine art and antiques fair where prestigious international dealers showcase their wares and where genuine masterpieces can be offered for sale. All items at the fair are vetted carefully for authenticity.

The 2010 fair will be held at the MECC (Maastricht Exhibition & Congress Centre) between March 12th and 21st, open daily from 11am. Tickets will set you back €55 per person or €90 for 2. Those aged between 12 and 18 years get in for €20 and under 12’s have free entry.

Getting to Maastricht

There are many flights to Amsterdam Schiphol from UK/Europe/US and from there you can connect onto the Dutch rail network. The train journey between Amsterdam and Maastricht takes around 2 and a half hours.

Visitors could also fly into Eindhoven airport – Ryanair operates flights from London Stansted, Dublin and other European cities – from there travel on to Eindhoven railway station and take the 1 hour train ride to Maastricht.

Another UK travel option is to use Stena Line’s Rail and Sail which includes a train from London to Harwich, a ferry over to Hoek van Holland and then an onward train valid to any Dutch station.

Maastricht has a small airport with a limited number of scheduled services. You could consider flying by private jet into Maastricht. For example, small jet operator Blink is offering a day return for up to 4 passengers from London for £3,599 or an overnighter for £4,999. They also fly from Geneva in Swizerland which will cost €4,299 and €5,999 respectively.

The MECC is located 250m from Maastricht-Randwyck railway station, literally a 3 minutes train ride from Maastricht central station or easily reached by taxi.
