A great place to grab an inexpensive and healthy lunch in Amsterdam is at V&D's La Place restaurant. La Place is part of Vroom & Dreesman, one of the Netherland's biggest department store chains. Situated at the end of Rokin (near Muntplein) with an additional entrance on Kalverstraat, this self service restaurant is very popular with both tourists and locals alike. |
A wide range of fresh food is available from sandwiches (bread baked in store), hearty soups and salads; alternatively try the meat / fish grill section with some of Amsterdam's best chips. There are also pizza, noodle and pasta dishes available - all hot dishes are cooked in front of you.

We have noticed prices at La Place have been creeping up over the last few years so it is not the bargain it once was - but you can still get a reasonable meal for €10 to €15. You will find a selection of fruit juices and smoothies, as well as cakes, coffee and tea. Wine and beer is also available.

Lunch times can be busy so a good tip is to get there just before midday. The self service food is on the first floor, with seating spread over three floors including a small outer terrace overlooking Kalverstraat.
At Amsterdam's central "OBA" library there is a La Place OBA and also an Italian self service restaurant callled Vapiano.
Department store Bijenkorf on Dam Square has a similar (but pricier) self-service restaurant: Bijenkorf Kitchen.
