NOTE: As of Feb 2016, due to bankruptcy, all V&D department stores have beed closed - this includes La Place on Rokin/Kalverstraat. La Place at the OBA library remains open.
A great place to grab an inexpensive lunch in Amsterdam is at V&D's La Place restaurant. La Place is part of Vroom & Dreesman, one of the Netherland's biggest department store chains. Situated at the end of Rokin (near Muntplein) with an additional entrance on Kalverstraat, this self-service restaurant is very popular with both tourists and locals alike.
La Place has a good range of fresh food available. Options include sandwiches with a selection of freshly baked baguette and focaccia rolls with various fillings; a salad and fresh fruit bar where patrons can try and cram as much into their bowl as possible!
If you are looking for hot food there are soups, pan-of-the-day, pizza, noodle dishes, plus a more substantial meat and fish grill section where the food is cooked in front of you. La Place also serves some very good chips as well.
La Place are known for their fruit juices and smoothies but they also offer hot drinks (with cakes/tarts), soft drinks, wines and beer. Sandwiches are priced around the €5 mark, mains tend to be €7 to €15. La Place also have a cheap breakfast of €3.95 until 1130 where you can choose 7 items from a buffet selection.
Some produce at La Place is organic including fruit, vegetables, potatoes, coffee, tea, beer and wine. They also focus on local and sustainable products where possible.
La Place Rokin Amsterdam has plenty of seating available over 3 floors including a small outer terrace facing Kalverstraat. Free WiFi internet is available. Lunch times can be busy so a good tip is to get there just before midday.
La Place also has a smaller restaurant located at OBA library with fine views over the city. La Place independent stores have been taken over by supermarket group Jumbo - hopefully another Amsterdam location can be found. For an alternative self-service department store restaurnat try Bijenkorf Kitchen near Dam Square.
