La Place restaurant is a great place to grab an inexpensive lunch in Amsterdam. Situated at the end of the Kalverstraat shopping street (near Muntplein) with an additional entrance on Rokin, this self-service restaurant has been very popular with both tourists and locals alike.
La Place has recently been taken over by the Jumbo supermarket chain following the bankruptcy of original owner Vroom & Dreesman (V&D) department stores. The restaurant was closed for a few months but reopened in June 2016.
La Place has a good range of fresh food available. Options include sandwiches with a selection of freshly baked baguette and focaccia rolls with various fillings; a salad and fresh fruit bar where patrons can try and cram as much into their bowl as possible!
If you are looking for hot food there are soups, pan-of-the-day, pizza, pasta and noodle dishes, plus a more substantial meat and fish grill section where the food is cooked in front of you. La Place also serves some very good chips as well.
La Place are known for their fruit juices and smoothies but they also offer hot drinks (with cakes/tarts), soft drinks, wines and beer. Sandwiches are priced around the €5 mark, mains tend to be €7 to €15. La Place also have a cheap breakfast of €3.95 until 1100 where you can choose 7 items from a buffet selection.
Some produce at La Place is organic including fruit, vegetables, potatoes, coffee, tea, beer and wine. They also focus on local and sustainable products where possible. We will be watching whether the quality of the assortment decreases following the Jumbo takeover.
La Place Kalverstraat Amsterdam has plenty of seating available over 3 floors including a small outer terrace facing Kalverstraat. Free WiFi internet is available. Lunch times can be busy so a good tip is to get there just before midday.
