Eating Out in Amsterdam
Amsterdam has many excellent restaurants, cafes and bars to suit every budget and taste - from Michelin star establishments to cheap self-service restaurants. Dutch cuisine is not exactly wordly renowned - with a menu usually based on meat or fish, potatoes and vegetables - and some additional influences from both Mediterranean and Indonesian cuisine. Other typical Dutch foods include pancakes, split-pea soup, raw herring and Flemish chips with mayonnaise. |
To sample authentic local cuisine try eating in a simple Dutch eetcafe (literally a cafe-bar which serves food, equivalent to pub food). For good Chinese and Thai food head to the area around Zeedijk not far from Central station. |

The top restaurants in Amsterdam include Ciel Bleu at the Okura, Ron Blaauw on Kerkstraat and La Rive at the Amstel. Jamie Oliver's Fifteen is also popular and there are a few very good Japanese teppanyaki restaurants in town as well.
There are plenty of options for vegetarians and those seeking organic food. For visitors on a budget there are many places to grab a decent, cheap meal whilst avoiding the "junk food" chains. Note, no smoking laws are in force in bars and restaurants (and all public buildings and workplaces) throughout the Netherlands.
